Gosh I LOVE the way your kitchen looks as is, though I understand the need for a backsplash. I wonder if there is something in a glass tile that can help you keep that lovely green color where it is throughout the kitchen?

Hi kjmac, the best thing about white cabinets and the style that you have is the versatility of it, meaning you can basically pick any type of backsplash (glass, marble, ceramic) and any color of your choice and they will work beautifully.

I was originally shown a large size milky glass subway tile that would probably show a little of the green color through but I keep balking because I am worried that it will get dated to quickly. I have been leaning toward a beveled white subway but worried that it is too simple. Also, a carrera subway? See why I need help, I can't commit. What do are your thoughts?

This article is fantastic. I work with many people selling their homes and those too personal design decisions now may cost you so much in the end that it is important to get expensive long term items like tile correct.

I think a subway tile would look great - either white or the one that shows a little of the green through. that will never go out of style.

I, like most of your responses, really love your kitchen look as it is. That being said, I love the idea of using a green glass tile to keep from breaking up your space or your color theme. I think the classic white would be pretty, but it would definitely break up your wall and the look that you have currently would be changed. Personally, as a designer, I love the idea of the green on the already green walls!

I think a carrara marble tile laid in the same pattern as your brick wall would be a timeless and unobtrusive treatment. It will play nicely with the soapstone counters and repeat the island counter top.

Repeating the honed marble in a brickwork pattern subway tile size would be a good way to make the kitchen feel classic.

I also like your kitchen, I envision a backspash that incorporates the wall colour, the island colour and the whites, with the green of your walls as the dominant colour. There is such a small amount of wall colour showing with this view, that if you strayed too far away it would not look appropriate to paint the walls that colour anymore. Without being able to see the colours correctly I won't try to find something, but I'm quite sure you would be able to find this.

Here is an idea of what I mean as a blended tile setting. it should be very subtle so that it does not command the eye from everything else but works as a whole. This is just an example not meant to match colours.

I agree with Manon on this one. I think the subway carrara would be a nice timeless look. They do make it with a beveled edge if you wanted to add a subtle depth to the splash.

kjmac- I think you may really love a tile that is one color, but has some relief and dimension. Walker Zanger has a line called Studio Moderne that has some really nice larger ceramic pieces that make geometric patterns. If you go to www.walkerzanger.com and visit the online catalog, it is the first series shown. But we also have many glass lines, carrara mosaics, and ceramic bricks. We'd love for you to visit a Walker Zanger showroom or certified dealer and look at some samples and take home some pieces to see how they look in your space.

If I were you, I would repeat the Carrara in the backsplash: That way there is more flexibility in color choices over the year.
