Fuyu persimmon, plum, loquat, and orange trees. Sited the persimmon for its beautiful fall leaf color where changes in seasons in Southern California are subtle or non-existent

We just removed our Meyer lemon tree. It was not doing well, and I actually prefer the Eureka lemons which we have in abundance. We didn't replace the Meyer but did put a beautiful coral bark Japanese maple in its place.

My Meyer lemon is in full bloom right now. This tree along with all my citrus has had lots of problems with leaf miner pests but this season it is growing new shoots without much trouble from the pesky insects. Very similar to an orange blossom the flowers on the Meyer lemon are amazingly fragrant. The bees go absolutely bonkers for them. Every time I walk over to the tree in my back yard I can find busy bees hopping from flower to flower. Who can blame them really? The aroma is just so sweet. I also have a Eureka lemon which while still alive isn't really producing much. The key lime is growing beautifully this season but only has a few blossoms on it. I have to say my most prolific citrus has got to be the Persian lime. This thing is amazingly productive even though it is just a small bush. My Tangelo, Nules Clementine Tangerine and my Seville Sour Orange are all in bloom as well. My pride and joy though are the four apricot trees I have; two Moorpork and two Royal Blenheims. It took a long time for those four to break dormancy but they look to be off to a good start.

Not that this was a contest, but Juan Casero, you win!

BTW, if you take a drink now and then, have you tried Pavan? Its somewhere between a wine and liquor, made with orange blossom and vanilla.

I wasn't really trying to compete. Others were commenting on how their citrus trees were doing so I figured I had something to contribute also. Unfortunately I cannot say I have tried Pavan. But if it is made with orange blossoms it must be very good indeed.

    Cheers!

Wow, just got an update on this thread. I had commented in 2014. Almost two years later, here is my qumquat. I love the sour fruit!
I envy those who have avocado trees. not an option in North Texas.
I love my messy fig trees when I make fig preserves. we have a peach tree, raspberries and a pecan tree as well. sadly the squirrels get most of my fruit these days.

My kumquat is pulled out from the pool edge because it was providing a perfect step for the squirrels to grab the fruit.

    hottina44,

If your Meyer lemon is exhibiting yellowing leaves that drop off then it might be either too high a pH in the soil and/or iron deficiency. Both are addressed by using the following product

    http://www.amazon.com/Hi-Yield-Copperas-Soil-Conditioner-Each/dp/B00FZQZN56/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1463441309&sr=8-3&keywords=copperas

I had a similar problem with a nules clementine tangerine tree I purchased earlier this year. I didn't read the nursery instructions carefully and applied 10-10-10 fertilizer to the tree. Well the tree was grafted onto trifoliage orange root stock which requires an acidic soil pH. I called the nursery and asked them I should do. They recommended that copperas stuff. When it arrived I applied 1 cup (8 ounces) of the power around me tree and watered it in thoroughly. In a few days I could see the green returning to the leaves (iron) and they stopped dropping. I repeated the treatment a few more times and started to water the tree with Miracid; miracle grow water soluble fertilizer for acid loving plants. It worked. The tree was saved and is now growing new leaves at the tips of the new shoots.

hottina, I wish I could help you! I live in San Diego and ignore my Meyer Lemon! I don't even water it because of the drought, and it still grows like crazy! I'm sorry but your climate may have something to do with your troubles.

How do I know if it's iron or ph?

Well if you see the leaves turn yellow and drop then it is iron deficiency. As it turns out the amount of iron in the soil is a function of the pH of the soil. This article explains it a bit better

    http://www.pthorticulture.com/en/training-center/role-of-iron-in-plant-culture/

You can google *role of iron in plant growth* for more detailed discussions.

    Christine,

Here is an article from my alma matter that explains the relationship between iron available to plants and the pH of the soil. You don't need to read all of it but the section on *Forms of Fe in the Natural Environment* I found particularly enlightening.

    Christine,

Here is a very interesting quote taking from the section of the paper labeled *Fe Uptake and Transport*

"Iron uptake can be interfered with by other cations in the soil solution such as manganese (Mn) and calcium (Ca)."

It is my understanding that clay soils are high in concentrations of calcium (Ca). In my area we have a mixture of clay and sand tilting more towards clay. So it would appear high clay soils can also interfere with the iron uptake by the root system of the plant causing chlorosis and leaf drop. It is the reason that I have to dope my fertilizer with Ironite a mixture of trace minerals sold at my local home depot.

Is it true ? If I put peroxide on Meyer lemon tree will it help it grow roots?

I don't know since I have never tried it. The chemical formula for peroxide is H2O2. Two atoms of hydrogen bound to two atoms of oxygen. Take one oxygen atom out and it would be plain water plus an oxygen radical. An oxygen atom by itself is a very powerful oxidizer my guess is it would react with almost anything in its proximity and be quickly bound up in a new compound. The website below says it is helpful because of the extra oxygen it delivers to the plants root. But like I said I have my doubts. A free oxygen radical (which is how oxygen exists in unbound atomic form) is highly reactive. It would almost immediately react with the minerals in the soil so I don't know if the plant will have any time to use it. It is true that the oxygen radical can kill pathogens and microbes in the soil *but* some microbes are actually helpful to plans as they break down organic matter and make it available in a form the plant can use.

We are residing in Illinois, but heart is still out west we grow Meyer lemons. I have a huge pot and a tree shipped to us about ten years ago we get between 25 and 40 lemons a year. We share some and make lemon drop martinis with the rest. Have really enjoyed explaining to the locals here that lemons grown on trees with huge spikes and letting them smell the flowers even better than gardenia.
    last modified: 10 years ago

I own both a gardenia and a meyer lemon and I agree with roozen. The fragrance of a meyer lemon tree in full bloom is much sweeter than that of the gardenia. My meyer lemon tree is my absolute favorite citrus tree but it does require more care than some of my other citrus like Key Lime.

We reside in Chicago, but our heart is out west. About ten years ago my husband had a Meyer lemon tree shipped to us. In lives out side from May through October inside through the winter where we enjoy the fragrance of its blooms if you are not familiar think gardenia. We average about 40 lemons a year we do share some while most are used for lemon drop martinis. It is a pleasure to share with the locals that citrus has varieties and for those who are very unfamiliar a band-aid after they encounter a spike. For those who are having trouble growing their lemon trees ours is potted, we use only organic potting soil and citrus food. We did pay more for a larger tree and had lemons the second year.

My mom had a dwarf clementine that took a few years to start producing fruit but once it finally did...oh my, we were picking bag after bag full of them for months. She never had to put pesticide on the tree at all either, the rest of her garden was hydrangeas and roses - all white. I remember a time as a kid when almost every suburban backyard in my small town had some fruit tree. Before the backyard was redone my mom had a giant lemon tree that was planted by the tract builder, didn't get many lemons from it though.

No one mentioned crab apple. They are pretty and make wonderful jelly. For those of you who like to make jelly or juice from your fruit, I highly recommend the stainless juicer/steamer from gardensalive.com - makes light work of extracting the juice.

50 year old in ground lemon tree. Hasn't fruited in several years but still bears fruit. Zone 9. Can I save it?

It's almost like this thread should be renamed, "Who grows Meyer Lemon Trees?" Being from Vermont, I am envious of all of the citrussy trees, avocados, etc. I have really added to my fruit selection though, so that I will have fresh fruit from May through December. I just invested in a freeze dryer in preparation for when the trees really start producing. Some of the things I am most eager for are the kiwis, mulberries, persimmons and peaches. Hard to narrow it down, because I have over 50 kinds of fruit growing here!
