What size dining tables work well in a 12x12 dining room? Round, recta

We will more than likely have a cabinet or small table of some sort along the wall with only 2 windows.

Hi Keala, this is how it will work with a 72" rectangular,72" round table, and 72" oval table

What size table would you use here? The open side has 6’ 1” to a wrought iron bannister for the staircase. We need space to put an 18” deep cabinet at least on one side.

Hi Robin, you can use a 76" rectangular or round table. With one side open you can use an extension if you need additional seating.

Thank you. i thought a 96’ long table might work since the open area is so big

I have a 72” table there now and it looks very small

For a 96" table, you need a minimum of 14' from wall to wall. If you ok with the table encroaching into the adjoining space and there will be a minimum of 36" behind the "head table" for sideway passage it will fit.

What size dining room table would you recommend for this area? I want to make sure there's enough walk room and it didn't feel crowded. I like to have 6 chairs.

You can use a 60* X 42" table with plenty of room to move around.

It looks like the dimensions on the plan were taken from the outside framing which makes the room smaller. 12' is 11'5 and 11'8 is 11'1 if this is a 2x4 wall so you can sit 8 people and if you need to sit more you can extend into the open side of the adjoining area.

Thank you GN builders for doing this! I’d love to know the maximum number of people we could seat in this dining room - 146 wide x 154 long, with a 3 foot opening on the 154 wall and 6ft opening on the 146 wall. I know we can seat 6 for everyday at a 72 inch table but would love to know how many folks we can fit for holidays and what size table you’d recommend to maximize this space. Thank you!

With a 72" table and 12" extension you can comfortably seat 8 people max 10 for tighter seating and also depending on the width of the chairs you will be using. Plenty of passageway room on the sides and at the 6' door opening if centered and sideway passage on the back wall.

Thank you, GN builders! If we fudge a bit on the clearances and extend the table into the 6ft opening (opens onto a hallway), could we ever fit 12? In that scenario, no one will need to walk behind the table on the side opposite the 6ft opening - people would use the 6ft opening to access the powder room and 3ft opening to access the kitchen. (We are debating how many extra leaves we need for our new tables.)

You can try to fit 12 people but it would be very tight even if you are not going to leave any passageway on the back wall... If you have 2 people seated on the end of the table and 5 people on each side you figure you need 2' for each person which comes out to 10' for 5 people.

Try to tape the area the size of your table with 1 or 2 extensions and see what you have left and see if you can fit 5 people on each side.

    Good luck

Hello GN Builders! I'm so glad I found you here. I'm thinking that a 60in round dining table would be our best option for this squarish dining space. Do you agree?

    Thanks!

60" would work but it will be a little tight there with the island and chairs behind it, IMO a 72" rectangular table would work much better in that area, or perhaps a smaller round table with an extension when needed.

This is super helpful. Thanks so much!!

It's me again with just one more question. I've had my eye on this oval table for a while, but it's 94 inches. Do you think it could work in my space 13x15 space as shown in the floor plan above?

Yes, the oval table will work as well, so you can get a table you like.

    Good luck

Hi GN Builders! We moved into this house a year ago and I’m finally getting around to the dining room. It measures 11’9”x11’11”. What would you say is the largest size round table I could get away with? What if I added a slim console table on the one solid wall?

This room will mostly be used as a game/puzzle room for the kids. They are also used to riding some cars through the room so clearance to get from the foyer to the kitchen is ideal.

    thank you!!

    Hi Abigail,

I wouldn't go with anything bigger than a 64" table. If you want something against the wall you will need something narrow and push the table closer to the doorway leading to the foyer.

Hi GN Builders! I have an 11’9” x 12’ room and looking to understand what size round table I could fit. Trying to maximize # of people for seating but don’t want the room to be too crowded either.

  • PRO

Gregg, it's the same size table as the previous post... the difference in room size between that and yours is only 1". Anything bigger will make it crowded, and if that table makes it too crowded go with a 60" table.

Hi GN Builders, would love your thoughts on table size and shape for this space. The design plan shows it as 18x10, but we have cabinets along the wall so it’s more like 15x10…and the 15ft does have walkway space included in that since it’s an open layout between kitchen, dining, and living rooms.

We’d like to seat 6-8 people. Thank you!

This is an updated view showing the walkway and the cabinets as well, the overall dining usable space is more like 10.5x11ft.

    Hi Bubbles,

There is a post I did a while back if you scroll up which has this layout

The only difference is your area will be 11" longer... This size table will work perfectly in your case with 2 open sides and it will give you more room near the rear where the sliding door is by pushing the table closer to the walkway. I wouldn't use anything larger and if you need more room go a size smaller, if more seating room is needed you can always add an extension.

I'd do a 60" round that can expand with leaves into an oval for when you have bigger holiday dinners.

Thank you GN Buiders, and Sabrina! GN - you wouldn’t recommend a 60” table then?

  • PRO

A 60" table would fit since everything is open but I wouldn't go with a 60" table with that kitchen island being there, with a 54" you have a comfortable 6 people seating, and it's perfect for a family to be closer... if you extend you can add seating for 2 more. Also having a deck and a sliding door there, during outdoor gatherings you will have lots of traffic in that area so a 54" table works much better in that area.

As holidays go, the dining room is the place for bigger occasions and gatherings.

    Good luck

GN - thank you for all your time and advice, I really appreciate it. You make some solid points about the deck and access for outdoor gatherings that I didn’t think about.

@GN Builders L.L.C would you be so kind to show me what size dining table would be best for this space and placement? The dining room is the current house but a whole new kitchen design, while the laundry/mudroom is an addition from the back which we use 100% of the time to enter the house. The walkway through and the walkway from kitchen at the end of the dining room is throwing me. The person who drew this put in chairs at the peninsula and I don’t know what size dining table. We plan to have bar stools that will go under the overhang.

    Hi Sarah,

I would go with a 60" + 12" extension Total of 72" (shown) x 40" or 42" Max in width rectangular or oval.

Thank you! I think rectangular makes the most sense in this space.

@GN Builders L.L.C Your suggestions are so helpful! Do you mind suggesting a shape and size for my octagonal dining room? We're a family of 4 and plan to get an expandable table. I'm clueless about what shape (rectangle, oval, circle) would work best in the space. Not only what would fit, but what would work well with the octagon-sized room. And I assume the same shape of rug underneath?

    THANK YOU!

    Hi AD,

Not sure about the exact wall dimensions near openings, or openings and what the bay opening is, and what size corners cut off's are I would go with a rectangular or oval... round will work also but it might be a bit tight as the passageway goes around it.

    around the table goes.

    Hi Sarah,

You can easily use an 84" table with a 12" extension when more sitting room is needed (shown open with a 12" extension total of 96")

    Good luck

    GN Builders,
Thank you for all your help. I never got around to remodeling the 12x12 dining room however I’m still using the recommendation from
2019 to go with the 72in round table and the 24in round chandelier light. However my question is around chair size for the table. We are waiting to sit 8. What size chairs and spacing do I need? I’ve included the original drawing you rendered and room layout.

Hi Charla, it's been a while, I hope you are doing well.

I use 22" wide chairs so each person will have a typ. 24" of elbow space.

Good luck, stay well, and have a wonderful Holiday Season!

This thread is so helpful! GN Builders, do you have a recommendation for the best size table that would fit in my dinette area? I originally found a table that was rectangular and 90" long, but I'm worried that it would be too large especially since we have an oversized island right next to our dinette area. I'm not sure if they'd appear to be competing for space? Here's a picture to show the flow of our new space.

If using (8) 22” wide chairs around a 72” round table, can you tuck them in nicely? Is there a certain depth needed so they’ll tuck in nicely when not being used?

  • PRO

This is a 21" deep chair X 22" wide with a 72" round table, so you can push most of the chair in when not being used.

Hi, I really appreciate the service you offer here, We have a dining space that is 14' x 16' its almost a square and I feel that a square table can make a very different look (not looking for the traditional look at all, We are looking for a clean and sharp look, almost no furniture other then the table and chairs), I was thinking 6' Square or 7' Square (We will not always have 12 chairs), I see that you never recommend square tables, is it because most dining areas aren't square or there is some other reasons?

    Appreciate your help immensely!

  • PRO

It all depends on the size of the table being used and your personal preference... In your case, you have a 41" passageway on each wall side which is plenty of room as that goes... The only thing you should keep in mind is that your family members or guests will be sitting 7' across from one another so the conversation will be a little louder in comparison when you have people sitting closer.

Try stretching a ruler to 7' and see if you're okay with having people conversing at that distance. Round or even an oval table would work much better in these situations if you don't like the traditional look plus you have room for the table extension when you need to sit more people.
