HVAC Ducts in a hallway

My older home (it was built by my grandfather in 1963) has had wood paneling covering the ductwork in the downstairs hallway for almost 40 years, when I removed the ugly (and poorly done) paneling the exposed ductwork reared it's slightly less ugly head for the first time in decades. I'm working with a contractor friend and we plan to patch the visible holes in the Sheetrock near the bottoms of the ducts, but what would the community suggest doing with the ducts themselves? My inclination was a drop ceiling by my friend thinks painting them with a metallic colour would look better. Let me know what you think.
