mmcharm, I have a very similar chair from Crate & Barrel called the "Sasha" side chair in a dark purple velvet, which I purchased in 2008, along with the Portland table and sideboard (took advantage of their annual fall upholstery sale). I cover them with beach towels when my nieces come visit (they were 7 and 4 when I first bought the chairs). They still look brand new and the set is used as our main table and chairs. I can understand why white would not work but don't hesitate on a darker color. :)

Thanks, I think my choice is definitely a round table and these are my favourite chairs so far. The issue is i'm getting all these ideas but don't move until April 2014. I'm going to check out Crate and Barrel website, thanks
