my kitchen

I had white 13 inch depth cabinets installed. The wood hood depth is 24 inches this is way to far to stick out past my cabinets to me what is your opinion?

Hoods always extend out that far, but they are also about 30" above the top of the range. They do not align with the bottom of the cabinets

Often a wood hood can project only 18" out. You need to make sure the blower fits in the shallower hood. Many of the projects that feature wood hoods on our Houzz page feature 18" deep custom or standard hoods.

The hood has to extend past your cabinets to do the exhausting from the stove

Virginia, I'm not a pro but it sounds okay to me. Our cabinets are also 13", and our hood is about 22" deep (same depth as the range top).

Residential hoods actually don't not need to extend out so far. Hot air rises and more powerful CFM blowers and even ones only 400 CFM's will capture all the smoke and grease created in residential use. Even when homeowners are using commercial ranges and cooktops. Most of the time the gigantic and incredibly powerful stainless steel hoods that extend out 24" were designed for restaurants where the range normally has multiple burners in use for hours on end. The powerful blowers and the large overhangs are to capture the excess heat.

Replacement air systems were mandated for when homeowners use these commercial hoods in residential settings because appliance sales people were recommending homeowners use professional hoods and knowingly poisoned people with carbon monoxide for a decade before laws were put in place. Hood manufacturers still give out misinformation - they only care about selling hoods. And their lack of ethics makes their recommendations completely unreliable.

Almost no appliance salesperson or hood manufacturer will ever explain to a customer the problems with a make up air system. Imagine a homeowners surprise when after buying the recommended 1200 CFM hood for their 48" wolf range and installing the required make up air system, they turn their hood up all the way in the middle of a New England winter and in under 10 minutes the inside air temperature on their entire first floor is 32 degrees farenheight!

In general residential hoods should be higher off the counter, shallower, and less powerful then the recommendations given by commercial range and cooktop makers.

Main Line Kitchen Design, that sounds like good info...thanks! The home we bought has a 48" stainless Thermador hood and range top. Hopefully the previous owners didn't buy a hood that was more than necessary. It seems to be fine, but I've only used the fan a few times so far.

Main Line, again, thanks for such helpful info! I've copied your comments to keep on hand if/when our current hood needs replacing. Wow...much more involved than I thought!
