Repeat clients of Mountainwood Homes traded their rural property for a downtown Camas, Washington charmer to enjoy a walkable lifestyle while their children finish high school. They bought an original, 1954 midcentury modern home intending to remodel it as a transitional family space before college. The whole house renovation balances modern living with respect for the original architectural character, blending contemporary finishes and functional upgrades to preserve its midcentury charm.

ADU kitchens are difficult to plan as you have to pack so much into such a tight space. We were able to accomplish a lot with this layout. We love the mini Bosch dishwashers and the Sharp Convection M/W Oven combo. It serves as the primary oven in this case whereas generally we use it as a supplemental oven if need be where we have a single 36" range. The drop-in electric cooktop has a sleek/flat design with minimal footprint in the kitchen and it's small hood conceals easily when not in use. In this organic modern kitchen, Nut Brown walnut cabinets in a custom paneled door style from Grabill Cabinets show off the beauty of natural wood. This creative transitional space was transformed from a very dated layout that did not function well for our homeowners - who enjoy cooking for both their family and friends. They found themselves cooking on a 30" by 36" tiny island in an area that had much more potential. A completely new floor plan was in order. An unnecessary hallway was removed to create additional space and a new traffic pattern. New doorways were created for access from the garage and to the laundry. Just a couple of highlights in this all Thermador appliance professional kitchen are the 10 ft island with two dishwashers (also note the heated tile area on the functional side of the island), double floor to ceiling pull-out pantries flanking the refrigerator, stylish soffited area at the range complete with burnished steel, niches and shelving for storage. Major renovation to a beautiful old Victorian outside of Boston. We opened up the kitchen to expose the original pantry, restored the old wood cabinets and painted the interiors a beautiful shade of navy blue. Exposed brick and added on a much needed mudroom and new entry to the kitchen, we were able to expose the back stair case and added batten and board on the walls. Beautiful.
