To create a more open plan, our solution was to replace the current enclosed stair with an open, glass stair and to create a proper dining space where the third bedroom used to be. This allows the light from the large living room windows to cascade down the length of the apartment brightening the front entry. An used closet under the stairs is transformed into a beautiful and functional chilled wine cellar with a new wrought iron railing for the stairs to tie it all together. Travertine slabs replace carpet on the stairs. LED lights are installed in the wine cellar for additional ambient lighting that gives the room a soft glow in the evening. Photos by: Ryan Wilson

The stairs leading down to the basement and up to the second floor. The rear wall is the same brick used on the exterior of the house. A series of skylights above flood the space with light. The passage on the lower level at the back leads to a concealed powder room. The staircase consists of a folded plate of metal, open white oak treads, and a winding walnut railing.

This staircase breathes traditional elegance into the home with classic design elements. Dark-stained treads and handrail create rich contrast against crisp white risers, newels, and vertical balusters. Wainscoting runs alongside the staircase, adding another layer of traditional detail that enhances the home's refined character. Centrally positioned, the staircase features a second-story balcony that wraps two sides above the main floor. This thoughtful design allows natural light to flow freely throughout the home while creating visual connection between levels. Staircase - contemporary wooden staircase idea in Seattle with metal risers

Located in Menlo Park, California, this 3,000 sf. remodel was carefully crafted to generate excitement and make maximum use of the owner’s strict budget and comply with the city’s stringent planning code. It was understood that not everything was to be redone from a prior owner’s quirky remodel which included odd inward angled walls, circular windows and cedar shingles. Remedial work to remove and prevent dry rot ate into the budget as well. Studied alterations to the exterior include a new trellis over the garage door, pushing the entry out to create a new soaring stair hall and stripping the exterior down to simplify its appearance. The new steel entry stair leads to a floating bookcase that pivots to the family room. For budget reasons, it was decided to keep the existing cedar shingles. Upstairs, a large oak multi-level staircase was replaced with the new simple run of stairs. Large minimalist walk-out light wood floor basement photo in Orange County with white walls

Modern family loft in Boston. New walnut stair treads lead up to the master suite. A wall separating the master bedroom from the double height living space was replaced with a folding glass door to open the bedroom to the living space while still allowing for both visual and acoustical privacy. Surfaces built into the new railing atop the stair create a functional work area with a fantastic view and clear shot to the play space below.
