A mural of pink peonies, scaled to fit the longest wall in the room, is strategically positioned as a Zoom backdrop. Walls match the mural’s off-black background, as if the artist had painted directly on them. Highlighting the tall windows, black painted frames add graphic interest against the cream sills. Simple cream drapery emphasizes the ceiling height while absorbing sound and adding warmth. A huge custom rug unifies the seating and working areas and further contributes to the hushed atmosphere.
In order for this room to feel more like a retreat and less like an office, we used regular furniture pieces in non-standard ways. The client’s heirloom dining table serves as a writing table. A pair of brass and glass consoles holds printer, stationery, and files as well as decorative items. A cream lacquered linen sideboard provides additional storage. A pair of cushy swivel chairs serves multiple functions – facing a loveseat and bench to create a cozy seating area, facing each other for intimate discussions, and facing the desk for more standard business meetings.

This playroom has Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring called Coretec Plus Ivory Coast Oak. It's very easy to install, so it is a good DIY floor. It's 100% waterproof, and it has a cork backing, so it makes for a good playroom floor because the cork absorbs sound.

Kitchen cabinets are the pillars of any kitchen. If you want to have a good kitchen, then you must think deeply about the kind of cabinets you are going to install. Apart from the type of cabinets, color plays a major role in determining the appearance of your kitchen. You can either go for light or dark options.
How dark can you go?
There are bold homeowners who have black kitchen cabinets installed in their homes. This is an extreme decision that has great benefits and a few cons. You might want to consider the benefits and the drawbacks before you decide to go dark on your kitchen cabinets.
The benefits of black kitchen cabinets
1. Sophisticated
One of the reasons why black kitchen cabinets are great is that they are sophisticated. They are dramatic in nature and show the ultimate sense of boldness in a homeowner. It is a color option that is used to make a statement of affluence and sophistication.
2. Don’t show dirt
Another reason why you may want to have this kind of cabinetry option is that they do not show dirt. Unlike light kitchen cabinets, the dark ones can hide dirt in the wood. This saves you the energy of having to wipe your cabinets often. However, you need to set a routine for cleaning your cabinets as they may get permanent stains if you don’t take care of them.
3. Perceived as warm
If you are looking for kitchen cabinets that are warm, you can opt for black kitchen cabinets. They are perceived to be warmer and friendlier because they absorb light, unlike light kitchen cabinets that reflect light away.
4. Unique
Black kitchen cabinets are unique. It is rare for you to find homeowners who are bold enough to install black kitchen cabinets. This means that they are used to express a unique personality.
Drawbacks of black kitchen cabinets
1. Make the kitchen look smaller
One of the drawbacks of black kitchen cabinets is that they make the kitchen appear smaller than it is.
2. Require more lighting
They need a robust lighting scheme that will help in creating light in the kitchen. Therefore, homeowners must invest in additional lighting in the kitchen if they intend to have black kitchen cabinets installed.
With these pros and cons, it is easier to decide if you are going to opt for black kitchen cabinets or go safe with the light kitchen cabinets.

Leather Description: A fully drum dyed top grain cowhide on European raw material. This leather is lightly ironed and then milled extensively for a unique distressed appearance. This is a natural full grain leather. The hides have not been altered in any way during the tanning process. Shade variation is normal and areas of hides absorb dyes differently, so natural dye lot variations will occur. Remember that a swatch is a general representation of the leather's color and texture, not an exact match. Scars, marks, and branding are not flaws but rather are proof of authenticity, what we call "hallmarks of the trail". Leathers will fade if exposed to direct sunlight. This is a pull up leather which means color diffusion and "burst" will occur when worked by hand. If any of these characteristics is a problem please consider a "painted" leather. One that has been corrected and heavily pigmented.
Embossed Leather Description: A leather used to accent many of today's home interiors. The leather hide is first embossed with a large crocodile grain and then colored by applying two base color coats of micro pigments. The leather is then wiped-off to give it a contrast of colors utilizing the base color combination. This color contrast is further accented by two additional top coat colors that are wiped-on by hand to give the leather a beautiful antique look. The last step is to slightly protect the hand work of the leather hide with a lacquer topcoat that provides great depth and warmth to the finished product. 100% top grain cowhide leather is characterized by variations in shade, texture, color and grain. Healed marks and scars are to be expected and enhance the natural beauty of the hides. These variations should not be considered defects as they are normal and unique features of genuine 100% top grain cowhide leather.
Frame Construction: Made with American Alder Wood, our frames are glued, screwed and dowelled at the joints. Two coats of high quality stain is hand rubbed on the wood finish and then sealed with industrial grade clear coat.

This Avon Home has it all. All that has to be said is see it at night. The superior construction and detail of the Home shines magnificently at night. The coining of the bricks, ledge mantles and chimney tops label this home to be in a league of very few. It was a great pleasure and honor to be called upon for the outdoor Lighting design and installation. The light photometric and color temperature is what first came to mind to me because of the absorbency of the bricks, Also the photometric spread as to diminish the hot spots that appear as torches on the bricks, Lens covers and finish pointing at night sometimes can make or break the effects of lighting. The drive by approach of this home is a head turner at night. For more info and views on this home go to www.OutdoorLightingDesign.com

This lovely landscape sports a poured in place concrete slab patio with drought tolerant sedum plants between the slabs. This sedum mix is sold in sheets then cut to fit but it’s actually grown for green-roof application. It works perfectly in this hot environment too as it is extremely drought tolerant and can go a month without water. Because the water runoff is absorbed between the slabs the patio drainage works perfectly and there are no need for drains. The swimming pool is of the fiberglass variety. Though the initial investment is greater than that of vinyl pools the ROI is greater over a 10 year period. Fiberglass pools retains more heat as the pool shell is all one piece and they don’t ever require a new liner.. This fiberglass pool has cool built-in benching and steps. And there is even a swim jet built into one side great for those cardio blasting swims. The pool interior colour is grey though it shows a soft blue/grey when water is added due to the reflection of the sky and other surroundings. The pool coping is natural stone with rock face edge. The steel arbour was custom made. Metal (steel) was chosen for it’s slim strength as wood placed here would have been too chunky. The best rooms (indoors or our) have a subtle layering of textural elements. To me this landscape needed a structure here to define the “rooms” It will look even better in a few years when the vines reach the top and the Miscanthus on either side reaches its 7′ height! The 12′ x 16′ pavilion is also made of steel and houses an alfresco dining table and sofa set. The pavilions built in cupola makes the warm breezes comfortably pass through with no need for a fan. It’s also sunken 2′ from the pool/patio height and nestled nicely in the corner. I must also mention the large slim planters with “Red Shades” Canna lily within. They are the perfect boldness/balance!Step through the arbor and a linear pond with “floating” natural stone step is revealed! Two smooth flow scuppers are responsible for the quiet waterfalls either side. A wood deck overhangs the pond adding softness to the setting. A modern retaining wall with natural stone cap runs the full width of the pond and pool adding interest and dimension. In the covered outdoor living area this wall is the perfect seat wall - adding lots of extra party seating!
The lesson to be learned here is that good design can be applied to any space. This backyard is only 50′ x 45′ and look what can be achieved! Landscape design and photography by Melanie Rekola

These clients love to entertain and host large parties, but their existing kitchen was just too small and outdated. They have a large family with two huge dogs, so we knew we had to create a layout to accommodate everyone. We wanted to open the back wall so that the kitchen could expand into a formal dining room that they rarely used.
We were able to remove the built-in pantry, open the back wall, and absorb the entire formal dining room, to create a massive, open, chef’s kitchen. We designed a large eat-in central island built around a 36” gas cooktop with a heavy-duty downdraft pop-up vent. We maximized the cabinetry storage and made the most of every cabinet with pull-out organizers, hands-free trash pull-out, roll-out trays, large pantry cabinets, and gorgeous backlit glass front cabinets. We also created a large stone front bar area complete with a bar sink, double beverage centers, and an ice maker. We added built-in bench seating in the breakfast nook, a custom built-in desk area to utilize the space under the stairs, and refaced the fireplace to match the stacked stone in the bar area.

Working with this homeowner was an absolute pleasure!
Him and his wife both wanted to keep some outdoor space for the kids and the dogs.
We created a pool that gave them that and more!
A pool that their family could grow with. Their children are young and the birthday parties and summer activities will create memories in this pool.
A large sunshelf with dual water features for the young ones, and for mom and dad to relax and catch some sun.
Full length steps lined with pearlescent blue tile. Double benches on either side of the pool topped with tile for a grande effect and a large full length bench the same way. The light design in this pool was ingenious! All 3 lights are facing away from the home, and this is the way we always like to do it. Unfortunately when the pool is built this way it is often difficult to light it without the light facing some part of the house. This pool however was designed with this problem in mind. Each bench is used as such and a hiding place for the lights, as well as the second step of the pool.
The pool deck selection is a Turkish marble as well as the coping. The customer was going for a clean look without a ton of maintenance. Marble is very dense and allows very little penetration of liquids. The most favorable feature is that it absorbs very little heat. The Florida sun can be relentless so it's great to be able to walk around your pool deck barefoot.

Another great placement for a wall mounted electric fireplace is a sitting or lounge area of your living room. Picture having a deep conversation with your friend sitting on a couple of chairs in front of the fireplace while enjoying the peaceful flickering of the flames. Or reading a book on a chaise next to the fireplace and absorbing the warmth radiating from the it.

Cork flooring in kitchen.
FUN FACT: Did you know the same material that is used as a stopper in your wine bottle has been used in construction material for more than a hundred years? Cork is great for flooring because it is:
- Considered “green” as only the bark from a tree is used
- Sound absorbent
- Hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, and non-toxic
- Naturally repels insects
- Resists fire and water
- Elastic & compressible making it comfortable to walk on and hard to dent
- If taken care of, can last for generations
Cork is a premium material that can be finished in many different ways and its color ranges from dark walnut to light honey color. The denser the cork the better it is for flooring.

The concept and design of the hotel and restaurant was done in collaboration with Sean MacPherson to transform the aging but extraordinary property into an authentic surf shack. The architectural goal was to create simplicity out of natural materials while allowing the physical expansiveness of the location to shine through. This involved extracting the design down to the wood structure, framing, and elements. Locally sourced cedar lines the rooms, absorbing the summer and early fall quality of light, allowing the inside and outside to blue and age together in natural harmony. The perfection of the space embodied in the imperfections.

Moss Garden: A Living Carpet of Tranquility
A moss garden is a serene, low-maintenance landscape feature that evokes a profound sense of calm and natural beauty. Composed of vibrant, velvety mosses that thrive in shaded, humid environments, these gardens offer a soft, carpet-like groundcover that replaces traditional lawns or gravel with rich, green texture.
At Westland Design, our moss gardens are thoughtfully integrated into the overall landscape to enhance a feeling of timelessness and stillness. Whether nestled beneath the canopy of trees, edging a stone pathway, or surrounding a tranquil water feature, moss brings subtle movement and color to quiet corners of the garden.
Key qualities of a moss garden include:
Evergreen softness: Moss provides lush, year-round greenery that requires no mowing or fertilizing.
Quiet beauty: It absorbs sound, contributing to a peaceful, contemplative environment.
Natural elegance: Ideal for Japanese-style gardens or woodland settings, moss complements stone, water, and wood elements with organic harmony.
A moss garden is more than a design choice—it’s an invitation to slow down, observe closely, and appreciate nature’s quiet elegance.

This project involved the complete transformation of a modern infill home to better align with the clients' tastes, needs, functionality, and style preferences. The renovation aimed to create a more personalized and functional kitchen that reflected the unique lifestyle and aesthetic choices of the homeowners. The previous design included one island which was too large for it to function correctly. Low quality cabinet materials which were de-laminating and with high gloss finishes that were not practical to their lifestyle.
In the original design, unappealing yellow tones evoked a hospital-like feeling absorbing the iconic I-beam ceiling and concrete floors. The new goal and vision was to transform the kitchen into a warm welcoming environment with durable finishes, a countertop that was easy to clean and maintain and re-invent and improve the function and storage of the cabinetry.
Ingredients include: Custom Slim Shaker Walnut cabinets and Self healing, fingerprint free black matte cabinets, Cambria Quartz countertops, brick tile accents to compliment the other existing architectural elements and a colourful chicklet tile which represented the clients love of pop art.
