This project consisted of The Grand Staircase in Allen Field House at the University of Kansas and 2 staircases in the adjoining DeBruce center. We went way out of our comfort zone on this project! We created and installed concrete stair treads that were colored and polished with exposed aggregate. The Grand Staircase consisted of nearly 500 square feet of precast concrete. The landing pieces ranged in size from 2 feet by 9 feet to 5.5 feet by 9 feet. After the precast pieces were finished, they were transported from Lenexa to Lawrence, then carefully placed via forklift. The 1 foot by 9 foot stair treads were placed by hand, all 20 of them. In the DeBruce Center, which houses Dr. Naismith’s Original Rules Of Basketball, we completed 2 stairwells that covered 3 stories each. These pieces were much smaller than the Field House stairs, measuring only 2″ thick by 5 foot wide. While these were easier to handle, we created 120 pieces for this half of the project, totaling nearly 500 square feet. While this took us out of our comfort zone, it was an incredible project and we were fortunate to place our artwork there. We were able to overcome the challenges, such as transport and installation of pieces that were much larger than we are accustomed to. We are honored to have our work be in such a historical building for many years to come!

Handmade in San Diego, California. Be inspired when you work at the beautiful Origins Desk. This is shown in a gorgeous and rare domestic hardwood called sweetgum but is also available in walnut. The footprint is small so it fits into a variety of spaces but the workspace is large enough to afford all creature comforts one is accustomed to when working. The drawer is 41L x 18D offering plenty of room to keep your workspace clear of clutter. Mitered edge joints highlight the continuous grain that flows from the top of the piece down the side. Contrasting maple dovetails add strength and demonstrate the precision and craftsmanship in the construction of this piece.

After Progressive Design Build completed a tropical-inspired kitchen and living room for this Bonita Bay homeowner, they asked us to update their outdoor kitchen as well. Important to this remodel was making sure it included ample seating for entertaining guests—beers and burgers for a big group! Because the cabinetry would be exposed to the elements, we used a composite material called Starboard which can withstand plenty of sun, wind, and rain, to which Southwest Florida homes are accustomed. Features of this fabulous outdoor kitchen include beautiful granite countertops, a gold tumbled stone tile bar and backsplash, an under-counter refrigerator, full-size grill with a wall vented hood, and a fully functional sink to ensure cooking and cleanup are a breeze.

This is a whole house renovation and addition in North Seattle. The lovely clients are accustomed to the warm and vibrant colors of their native country. They asked Story to design an addition and whole-house renovation that would be in keeping with the needs of their busy family. We opened up the home on the first floor, giving a loft feel. Black windows and white, high-ceilinged spaces set a backdrop for splashes of color throughout. Warm wood flooring borders mosaic cement tile, and a large pantry has sliding barn doors that also hide an entrance to the family room. Upstairs, we redesigned the Owner’s Suite bathroom to include a high window for light, and a floating vanity with bold tile accents. These clients also asked us to add a guest suite on the first floor for visiting relatives - something that’s becoming quite common in renovations. These clients were very involved in the interiors for the project, and much of the artwork in the home was made by the client and her mother, who uses the guest suite when she visits for long intervals.

Large windows were used in the dormers to provide egress in the event of fire, a code requirement. Window seats were built into the dormers to add interest. The cushions were covered in a fabric matching the upholstered furniture in the adjoining seating loft/den. Because the window seats (and thereby the cushions) were so large, a quartered pattern was used to cover the cushions. The owner has a prized Weimaraner who is accustomed to sleeping in his owner’s bedroom. CCI cleverly captured some eave space and created a “crate niche” for the dog’s crate which puts the dog near his owner but his crate out of foot traffic and immediate sight.

Steve Kennedy lives in a barn. At least that's where he spends a great deal of time when he's not at work running Kennedy, Inc., manufacturers of sterling silver corporate gifts. After all, that's where he keeps his baby - a 1954 Chevy half-ton, step-side pickup with a short bed and 5-window cab. Steve restores vintage trucks at home in a special building out back - equipped for just that occasion. But don't let the barn boards and beams fool you. As someone who knows the value of high-end merchandise, Steve works on his latest project with the help of Lista drawer storage cabinets. He uses them to store and organize all the parts and tools he needs to keep his truck's 235 cubic inch straight 6 with four-on-the-floor purring like a kitten. This is Steve's country.
