This is a whole house renovation and addition in North Seattle. The lovely clients are accustomed to the warm and vibrant colors of their native country. They asked Story to design an addition and whole-house renovation that would be in keeping with the needs of their busy family. We opened up the home on the first floor, giving a loft feel. Black windows and white, high-ceilinged spaces set a backdrop for splashes of color throughout. Warm wood flooring borders mosaic cement tile, and a large pantry has sliding barn doors that also hide an entrance to the family room. Upstairs, we redesigned the Owner’s Suite bathroom to include a high window for light, and a floating vanity with bold tile accents. These clients also asked us to add a guest suite on the first floor for visiting relatives - something that’s becoming quite common in renovations. These clients were very involved in the interiors for the project, and much of the artwork in the home was made by the client and her mother, who uses the guest suite when she visits for long intervals.

The 3 bathrooms in this 1970's house were in serious need of remodeling - as in gut and re-build - so the owners decided to have them all done at once and while at it, refinish the floors, refurnish the living room and furnish the new screen porch addition. As a designer in a seasonal resort area, I am accustomed to working with my customers long distance. Using (and e-mailing) computer drafted renderings, product layout pages very professional builders, suppliers and steady communication, my client and I moved flawlessly through the challenges all remodel projects present. My goal was to find fabrics and furnishings that reflected the home's original architectural Mid Century Modern integrity The house has very strong horizontal lines that I wanted to repeat in the furniture, bathroom fixtures, tile and light fixture selections. This project was completed for a client who recently moved from a California mansion to a Georgia penthouse in order to be closer to family. It was a huge down size so it was important for our design team to help obtain that same grand appeal that the client was accustomed to, within a significantly smaller home. We created an open space plan that would allow for entertaining many guests at once. With proper scale in consideration, we chose to use large furniture that would make up the living room and dining space to reinforce that grand effect. Lending to this concept we hung drapery higher than the window frames and a bold ceiling fixture in order to compliment the height of the ceiling. Along with these accommodations we utilized the clients existing collection of eclectic wall art to fill the bare walls. In the end we were able to create a space that did not feel foreign to our client, but rather like home.

This project consisted of The Grand Staircase in Allen Field House at the University of Kansas and 2 staircases in the adjoining DeBruce center. We went way out of our comfort zone on this project! We created and installed concrete stair treads that were colored and polished with exposed aggregate. The Grand Staircase consisted of nearly 500 square feet of precast concrete. The landing pieces ranged in size from 2 feet by 9 feet to 5.5 feet by 9 feet. After the precast pieces were finished, they were transported from Lenexa to Lawrence, then carefully placed via forklift. The 1 foot by 9 foot stair treads were placed by hand, all 20 of them. In the DeBruce Center, which houses Dr. Naismith’s Original Rules Of Basketball, we completed 2 stairwells that covered 3 stories each. These pieces were much smaller than the Field House stairs, measuring only 2″ thick by 5 foot wide. While these were easier to handle, we created 120 pieces for this half of the project, totaling nearly 500 square feet. While this took us out of our comfort zone, it was an incredible project and we were fortunate to place our artwork there. We were able to overcome the challenges, such as transport and installation of pieces that were much larger than we are accustomed to. We are honored to have our work be in such a historical building for many years to come!
