There are not many things better than a room full of your favourite people. As you gather you smell dinner cooking in the kitchen and music playing in the background, as joyful conversation and laughter fill the room. I feel so grateful that we are inching our way back to these days. How about you? The project I’m sharing with you today has beautiful moments like these at its heart. Spaces that invite people in, foster connection, and make everyday living so simple that it’s impossible not to enjoy... Meet our Delightful Clients: The family behind this 1950s North Vancouver home transformation enjoy entertaining friends just as much as cosying up to watch a movie together. A professional couple (I'll call them Jon and Anna) with two elementary school-aged sons, Anna and Jon approached us with the task of furnishing the main floor living spaces and the basement of their family home. Anna is a busy lawyer who is now working almost full time from home, and Jon works in the film industry. With full careers, two active boys, and a love of gathering, they craved a home that could support their everyday lifestyle. Design and Lifestyle Goals: Our central goal for this project was simple: to uncover the hidden potential in their home and create a family-friendly space that functioned well and flowed seamlessly. On the main floor, our clients tasked us with creating an area for the family to relax and entertain, along with crafting a work and play space for the boys. They also dreamed of a more functional and bright basement, which they envisioned as a dual purpose family room and home office for Anna. Reveal: Comfortable and Welcoming Entryway & Living Room: Imagine you are coming home, and you walk through a bright, sunny front door like this one. You are met by this entryway of calming earth and sea tones, paired with warm, natural wood flooring. You feel instantly welcomed and eager to venture further inside... The same is now true for our clients! The simple details in their entryway are thoughtfully arranged with clean lines and colourful art as the focal point, achieving a timeless and friendly aesthetic. Dried wheat brings movement into the space and plays up the beauty of nature, while the vibrant yet warm colours and textures evoke feelings of comfort and homecoming. The entry flows seamlessly into this connected living area, which is adorned with ample seating strategically arranged to host and accommodate joyful conversations. With the fireplace and wood mantel as the focal point, these natural elements and hues warm up the room to make it feel beautifully lived-in (not like an untouchable museum). Another colourful work of art graces the space above Jon’s and Anna’s sofa, and we used decorative pillows and a throw blanket to tempt those colours into the rest of the room. A simply styled coffee table keeps the space feeling open and engaged. Reading material, anyone? Just beyond this living area, you get a glimpse of the second space our clients requested on their main floor... A Collected Space for Children to Work + Play: When Jon and Anna realised that their formal dining area wasn’t being used to its full potential, they imagined creating a work and play space for their boys instead. We came up with a plan to create a shared desk area with plentiful storage. This timeless natural wood desk was the perfect way to maximise surface area and give the boys plenty of space to do homework during the school year, or spend time crafting or building LEGOs during the summers. The drawers provide storage for all the wonderful items that fuel their productivity or creativity. Or both. I also love how the white floating shelves display a collection of nostalgic toys, providing just the right amount of childhood endearment to this sophisticated and functional space. This workspace now has endless possibilities for the boys, and it helps Jon and Anna keep their minds and spaces clear, too. Which brings us to... Basement Family Room & Home Office: In general, we knew we had to maximise surface area in this ‘50s home, and this was especially true for our clients’ basement. I’m happy to say that we designed an effortlessly comfortable space that focuses on family and makes it simple to settle in and work… or leave the workday behind. Welcome to this dual-function office and family room. Toward the back of the room, we strategically positioned Anna’s wraparound desk facing out into the room and gave her a wallpaper-and-art backdrop for stunning Zoom calls (she has already received glowing compliments). There is plenty of storage for easy organization including a space to store the family’s shared printer near the door… so they don’t have to interrupt “Mom” to get to it. Anna also wanted the freedom to be able to relax in this space with her family and turn her back on the work day — quite literally! The sofa is perfectly positioned backing onto the desk allowing her to do just that. We relocated an existing mustard yellow chair and used pops of the same colour to integrate it into the overall scheme. The wood armrests on this modular sectional provide surfaces for snacks and drinks where there was no room for an end table. The walnut finish carries the theme of natural comfort from the upstairs spaces down into the family room. The view from the sectional is less business and more pleasure, featuring cosy seating and throw pillows in cheerful colours and patterns. The highlight of this space? A wallpapered accent wall where we were able to achieve the high-end feel of custom built-in shelving with a simple IKEA hack. The shelves and cabinetry around the television offer plenty of much needed storage space to house family games and movies at a budget price point. This fun room is the perfect balance of work and play, accommodating and supporting our clients’ daily family adventures. What Our Clients Had to Say... To achieve a more thoughtful layout, we shifted the door, removed the linen closet, and reconfigured the design to allow for a generous his and hers double vanity. The LED lit vanity mirrors and striking sconces add a modern touch. The custom linen cabinet, complete with mirrored doors and full-extension drawers, provides more functional storage than the old linen closet. The shower was reimagined with plentiful glass to bring in the light. We installed multiple showering options that can be used alone or in combination including body sprays, rain head shower, standard and handheld showers. We paired a classic tub filler with a modern freestanding tub which makes the space feel both timeless and current. Replacing dark dated tiles with stunning marble-look porcelain brightens up the entire room. Programmable heated floors provide warmth and comfort and are a luxurious enhancement to any bathroom. Design elements from other rooms were even carried into the custom his and hers closets, achieving a cohesive style throughout the home.

Creating the Perfect Outdoor Living Area When Barrister Homes and Arapahoe Landscape Contractors came together to work on another house, they immediately thought of Braen Supply to supply the materials they needed to complete the job. From the patio to the outdoor fireplace, the homeowner was able to select materials that would help them achieve a backyard paradise with a modern feel. Working With the Experts Knowing that the fireplace was going to be the focal point of the backyard, the homeowners selected Mystic Gray with the help of the experts at Braen Supply for the patio; the cool grays in the stone would be complimented nicely by the warmth of the fire. Tennessee Gray was chosen for the wall caps and pool coping and Bluestone wall caps, steps and slabs were also incorporated into the design to really tie together the entire look of the outdoor living area. Together they were able to achieve the perfect blend of colors and materials to create a clean, modern outdoor living area the homeowner dreamed of.

These clients wanted a space that suited each of their needs both functionally and aesthetically, while also still complimenting each other. He wanted his closet to be more about having a place for everything and to create order. We achieved this with cubbies, double hang, and shoe shelves. Whereas, for her closet she wanted the functionality, but also really wanted that added wow factor. We achieved this by taking the unit to the ceiling, adding decorative crown molding stained to match the unit, adding decorative drawer and door faces, and the item that she said was of utmost importance, a wall of shoes! To create more of a cohesive look between the two spaces we used the same chocolate apple melamine.

Natural Nook Living Room

This quaint living room space is especially cozy. For this design we incorporated a variety of natural products to achieve a soft, subtle, and most importantly comfortable space. As you kick back and relax on the oversized plush sofa it will be hard to take your attention from the custom media center. We designed this media center using grey plywood veneer which gives it depth as well as a finished natural wood look. We hung two wall sconces one on each side of the media center to provide just the right amount of light to perfect the natural nook ambiance we were trying to achieve here. Each wall sconce is made of capiz shells more commonly known as windowpane oysters. This room has amazing natural design details down to the tops of the tables. Each of the end tables has a starburst effect in the black forest grove wood tops which are accented by a chrome finish on the iron table legs. The centerpiece that completes this nook is the stunning reclaimed wood coffee table that has personality with its natural cracks and crevices intact. pierreji.com

The goal in building this home was to create an exterior esthetic that elicits memories of a Tuscan Villa on a hillside and also incorporates a modern feel to the interior. Modern aspects were achieved using an open staircase along with a 25' wide rear folding door. The addition of the folding door allows us to achieve a seamless feel between the interior and exterior of the house. Such creates a versatile entertaining area that increases the capacity to comfortably entertain guests. The outdoor living space with covered porch is another unique feature of the house. The porch has a fireplace plus heaters in the ceiling which allow one to entertain guests regardless of the temperature. The zero edge pool provides an absolutely beautiful backdrop—currently, it is the only one made in Indiana. Lastly, the master bathroom shower has a 2' x 3' shower head for the ultimate waterfall effect. This house is unique both outside and in.

NATURE INSPIRED HOME REMODEL

2024 interior design trends are moving beyond the classic white and gray toward warmer tones that create an ambience of comfort and connection with nature. This year, the spotlight has been on warm tones paired with green accents that are both inviting and rejuvenating. This Stoneunlimited Kitchen and Bath client's home serves as a beautiful example getting back to warmer neutral tones of incorporates deep chocolate tones, warm browns and taupe to create a harmonious feeling as you walk through each space. Creamy gray painted walls are the perfect backdrop for the bolder design elements found in the exposed beams, backsplash, two tone cabinetry and accent walls. This home remodel has been inspired by nature. The dynamic sage green paint on the wall of the dedicated beverage station and in the living room bring life to each space. Our client has tastefully placed accent foliage and other decor throughout the home that has brought the outdoors into each room. Textures in the backsplash, natural wood grains in the cabinetry and exposed beams create a forest feel which is both inviting and peaceful. Stoneunlimited Kitchen and Bath Remodeling had the opportunity to help this customer achieve their dream of a fully remodeled main floor which included: kitchen, guest bathroom, dining room, kitchenette, pantry, living room and office. Extensive carpentry work was performed in what used to be a dinning and sitting room on the main level. A large wall was removed, and a new wall was created with a door entry and a recessed beverage station was installed with two tone upper and lower cabinets that house a small fridge. The upper cabinets with lighting were installed inside the glass upper cabinetry to add layered lighting to the space. Three wood beams were installed in the ceiling and a new kitchenette/pantry area was created behind the newly constructed wall. The kitchenette/pantry area includes a tall storage area as well as upper and lower cabinetry with a sink and small fridge. The kitchenette pantry is a perfect place to house countertop mixers, crock pots, air fryers or other small appliances that are accessible for immediate use. The main kitchen tops remain free of small appliance clutter and the countertops become an expansive workspace. The existing kitchen had a peninsula that made the area feel confined, prior to the kitchen remodel portion of the project. The peninsula was removed, and the fridge was relocated to the opposite wall, across the room to create a more open feel. Although a working island was installed, the flow through the kitchen feels more open and fluid than it did previously. The work island houses the microwave as well as additional storage. Spice and utensil pull outs to the left and right side of the range keep prepping utensils and seasonings conveniently tucked away. Other projects that were completed included in the home included new cabinetry and floating shelves that were installed in the living area. The two-tone aesthetic of the cabinetry is consistent with the other areas of the home and merge beautifully with the natural stacked stone feature in the fireplace wall. Darker lower cabinets anchor the room while lighter warmer upper tones provide a lighter feel without overpowering the space. The guest bathroom off of the living area was also remodeled. Taupe tones were introduced with the natural warm tones of newly installed cabinetry and countertops to maximize the storage space. 6 1/2 x 40" nut brown plank tile was installed and can be seen throughout the expanse of the first floor, giving the appearance of wood but are porcelain which are highly durable and easy to maintain. The homeowner also opted to have their main stairwell redone which included removing existing carpet, installation of stair treads and hardwood for the steps and landing area which included sanding and staining. Overall, the interior remodel of the main floor of this client's home was extensive and the impact of the changes that were made are incredible! The choices that were made with our client make this remodel not only specialized and customized to their everyday needs but a beautiful representation of how a dream home remodel can be achieved and accomplished. This home remodel checks all the boxes for what's in trend in 2024. New build dreams always require a clear design vision and this 3,650 sf home exemplifies that. Our clients desired a stylish, modern aesthetic with timeless elements to create balance throughout their home. With our clients intention in mind, we achieved an open concept floor plan complimented by an eye-catching open riser staircase. Custom designed features are showcased throughout, combined with glass and stone elements, subtle wood tones, and hand selected finishes. The entire home was designed with purpose and styled with carefully curated furnishings and decor that ties these complimenting elements together to achieve the end goal. At Avid Interior Design, our goal is to always take a highly conscious, detailed approach with our clients. With that focus for our Altadore project, we were able to create the desirable balance between timeless and modern, to make one more dream come true.

East Village Triplex

This loft is situated in the former International Tailoring Company Building in New York’s East Village. The clients bought a top-floor loft and an abandoned mechanical room directly above it. Our task was to combine the rooftop space with the loft to create a cohesive triplex apartment. We achieved this by carefully opening up the roof’s 100-year-old structural members to install a staircase connecting the existing loft to the additional upper two levels. On the main floor, the first run of the staircase is located in the apartment's entry and is made of a sculptural form of dark oak. The second run of the staircase is more open, allowing light from the top level's many windows to filter into the spaces below. The existing main loft was gut-renovated to create a more open space. The open kitchen/living space was strategically positioned to be surrounded by the building’s huge industrial steel windows, taking advantage of the apartment's high vantage over Union Square. Opposite the windows, custom woodwork serves to unify the kitchen with the living room. The built-in spans the full width of the apartment with dark textured oak panels concealing the appliances, the TV, and creating ample storage. The blackened steel paneled backsplash and chunky black granite countertops complete the dark color palette used in the kitchen. Throughout the apartment, a play of dark and light elements creates a distinctive atmosphere. In the open living areas, the light pouring in from the large windows contrasts with the dark colors selected for the built environment. The more private spaces, such as the bedroom, have a darker feel, with walls and ceilings painted in a deep purple that borders on black alongside more dark oak custom built-ins. The dining room functions as a bridge between the public and private spaces, with walls and ceiling painted in the same moody purple and a vintage mirrored tile accent wall reflecting natural light from the adjacent room’s windows. The middle floor, which has fewer windows, is painted bright white to enhance light in the home office located there.. On the penthouse level, panoramic views were achieved by installing new floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels, supplementing the existing industrial steel windows, and opening onto an adjacent roof terrace. The top floor functions as a lounge overlooking the city and includes unique custom features, such as a steel multi-drop lighting fixture above the stairs, hanging glass and steel shelving, and a built-in wet bar. Here again, dark-colored finishes and materials are used as a counterpoint to the abundant light entering the space. A future plan for the apartment is to create a private roof garden on top of the penthouse with an outdoor stair connecting it to the roof terrace below.

Designed by Lauren Hunt of Reico Kitchen & Bath in Charlotte, NC in collaboration with Modern Restoration, this transitional white, shaker inspired kitchen remodel features Merillat Masterpiece cabinets in the Rockwell door style with a painted Dove White finish. Kitchen countertops and backsplash feature Cambria in the color Annicca. The kitchen also features KitchenAid appliances. According to Lauren, "It was really important for us to create functional storage as there is limited cabinet space. Rollouts in the pantry, tray dividers above the oven/microwave combo and spice and utensil pullouts by the range helped us achieve that goal. We were also able to use Merillat Masterpiece's double waste basket sink base so we did not have to sacrifice precious cabinet space elsewhere. I absolutely love this kitchen and working together with my clients to create this space." Added the client, "Lauren was lovely to with from start to finish. In this project, the homeowner wanted to convert his traditional dining room into a more open concept with an overall transitional design. To achieve this look, the wall between the sunroom and dining room was removed, and a wet bar with a built-in hutch was installed bringing the two rooms together. Another element to achieve a more open concept was the addition of new rustic hickory, light hand-scraped, solid wood flooring that flows throughout the renovated space. The transitional design continues in the space through use of DesignCraft cabinets in cherry cappuccino with a burnt sienna glaze, Cambria Harlech countertops and a beautiful new rustic dining room set. As Brooklyn continues to reach upward, its newest denizens demand an aesthetic which marries the past with the present. For the latest buildings, rooftop spaces are not an after-thought but are carefully engineered and planned early in the design phase, often long before there is a semblance of a space to survey. The primary challenge with common spaces for residential buildings is to provide some level of individual privacy while developing an overall spatial design which will also foster social interaction between users. In order to achieve this balance, smaller conversational spaces which are defined through the rigid face of the wood-clad planters and accented by hearty plantings and provide a diverse mix of seating types from long benches attached to the face of the planters to moveable chairs and tables allowing for maximum flexibility. The smaller conversational spaces take advantage of the views from the outside edges of the roof while the larger common spaces are defined by plant-softened wood fences. The materials of the space borrow from the buildings context, reclaiming many of the materials which permeated Brooklyn’s industrial heritage. Concrete, steel, aluminum and various fabrics are some of the elements which help to unite the past with the present. Transferring the feel of the sidewalk planting bed to the rooftop is achieved through the raw steel-edged green-roof garden areas which help define the spaces.

Located in Florya, Istanbul, Ihlamur Apartment House has a total living area of 280 square meters consisting of kitchen, living room, bathroom, bedroom, children’s room and youth room. The harmony of wood and black is dominant in its kitchen. By applying separate lighting to the food preparation and eating areas, both adequate lighting is provided and the kitchen appears to be separated according to its purpose. In addition, the use of pendant lighting made both the ceiling higher and the environment feel spacious. Instead of a dark color, light marble tiles are used on the floor. Color balance is achieved in the kitchen with tiles that match the marble-patterned matte black color used in the under-counter cabinets. Thanks to the glass doors, the spaces are made to feel wider and more spacious than they are. In addition, this feeling is supported by the mirror in the hallway. Dark wood and matt black color dominate the staircase, which is desired to form a whole with the design of the house. As in almost the whole house, pendant lightings are preferred in the living room. The bookcase, consisting of circular shaped matte black shelves in the living room, gave an aesthetic appearance to the environment. In addition, the mirror passing through the middle of the circular form not only supports the aesthetic image, but also appeals to the perception of width, making the room feel wider. The design of the living room was completed with the television unit designed in gray tones and simply. A richer design has been made in the bathroom. A simple yet elegant bathroom design has been achieved by utilizing the harmony of black and gold. A surface-mounted rail fixture is used in the youth room. Thus, the need for light is met. An L-shaped desk is placed in the corner and a work area is created. In this way, space was saved and an environment suitable for other activities and activities that could be done in the room was provided. Blue tones and lighter colors are preferred in the children’s room. The wall was evaluated in two parts and boring was avoided. In the bedroom, it is more minimalistic compared to other areas. The perfect harmony of white and wood was used.

A tiny kitchen got an opportunity to grow when a next-door apartment was purchased and combined. Loving the rich grain of cherry but disliking its red tones, a warm brown stain on the Shaker cabinet doors achieved both. Mixed with white upper cabinets inset with opaque glass, both blend beautifully with a gray-toned porcelain floor that is rectified (square edged) to give a seamless appearance. A washer and dryer are well-hidden inside a tall cabinet with a pullout shelf for folding. The walls were painted to match the soft aqua tint of the glass and a white mosaic porcelain backsplash maintained the clean lines. Achieved: a warm and inviting, multi-tasking, and comfortable new kitchen.

Rooms filled with light, fine art and antique furniture were the backdrops for our "Kentfield Collected" project. This was an overall home refresh and our team loved the challenge of bringing new life to the exquisite existing collection of art and antiques. We started with thoughtful space planning to achieve an overall outcome that is more pleasing for the clients' enjoyment of the home when each room feels more balanced. The refreshing of exciting items and the selection of a few new pieces brought a touch of light, beauty and pop of unexpected that paired beautifully with the treasured finds of the homeowners. In the powder bath, the poppy wall covering, navy vanity and silvery metallic ceiling paint is one of the pops of unexpected delight you will find in the home. Our team designed beautiful linen draperies in a creamy gold-tone that perfectly framed the amazing view from the dining room windows. The buffet in a dark navy with a faux Belgian linen finish and a pair of crystal lamps were the right balance to complement the wall art in the room. The addition of a game table to the living room framed by a mirror and scones is an ideal spot for a game of cards or stunning flowers. The reupholstered chaise took on a hip and vibrant vibe in a lush green velvet fabric and placed in a perfectly edited guest suite. Custom outdoor cushions and pillows create a spot to enjoy the deck and views at the end of the day. Rooms filled with light, fine art and antique furniture were the backdrops for our "Kentfield Collected" project. This was an overall home refresh and our team loved the challenge of bringing new life to the exquisite existing collection of art and antiques. We started with thoughtful space planning to achieve an overall outcome that is more pleasing for the clients' enjoyment of the home when each room feels more balanced. The refreshing of exciting items and the selection of a few new pieces brought a touch of light, beauty and pop of unexpected that paired beautifully with the treasured finds of the homeowners. In the powder bath, the poppy wall covering, navy vanity and silvery metallic ceiling paint is one of the pops of unexpected delight you will find in the home. Our team designed beautiful linen draperies in a creamy gold-tone that perfectly framed the amazing view from the dining room windows. The buffet in a dark navy with a faux Belgian linen finish and a pair of crystal lamps were the right balance to complement the wall art in the room. The addition of a game table to the living room framed by a mirror and scones is an ideal spot for a game of cards or stunning flowers. The reupholstered chaise took on a hip and vibrant vibe in a lush green velvet fabric and placed in a perfectly edited guest suite. Custom outdoor cushions and pillows create a spot to enjoy the deck and views at the end of the day. 80's Ranch Kitchen Remodel

By removing walls that had enclosed the kitchen of this 80's Ranch style, the owners have achieved an open floor plan. The corner sink allows for counter space between it and the slide in range. A 40" high peninsula is covered in the same stone as the refaced fireplace. The mantel flows with the cherry kitchen cabinetry. The cabinet hardware compliments the contemporary door style with its' 3" stiles and rails. Ample lighting is achieved with can lights, pendants, and under cabinet puck lights.
