Over the span of approximately two years, Richard helped his client accomplish his vision by selecting pieces of modern furniture that possessed the right colors, earthy tones, and textures so as to complement the home’s pre-existing features. The first room the duo tackled was the great room, and later continued furnishing the kitchen and master bedroom. Living up to its billing, the great room not only opened up to a breathtaking view of the Newport coast, it also was one great space. Richard decided that the best option to maximize the space would be to break the room into two separate yet distinct areas for living and dining. While exploring our online collections, the client discovered the Jasper Shag rug in a bold and vibrant green. The grassy green rug paired with the sleek Italian made Montecarlo glass dining table added just the right amount of color and texture to compliment the natural beauty of the bamboo sculpture. The client happily adds, “I’m always receiving complements on the green rug!” Once the duo had completed the dining area, they worked on furnishing the living area, and later added pieces like the classic Renoir bed to the master bedroom and Crescent Console to the kitchen, which adds both balance and sophistication. Here’s a job I completed just before Christmas last year, at a house in Northampton which has a rich history and mix of architectural styles. The run up to Christmas is always popular as people try to get their household projects finished off in time for celebrating the festive season with family so this is always a busy time for Tile Doctor. The photos below show a neglected Victorian Quarry tiled floor in need of repair, with cracked tiles along the edges. These were caused by somebody in the past using brute force to remove carpet gripper rods which had been glued to the tiles. These cracks were present around the edges of the entire hallway, however; this particular type of tile is very hard to get hold of. Furthermore, it is a costly process to replace the tiles as the skirting boards would have had to have been removed. As well as the physical issues the floor had a dull appearance due to the build-up of builder’s dust and the general wearing down of the paintwork over time. I agreed with the client that the best course of action would be to fill the tiles, and paint the damaged tiles using a colour that matched as close as possible. Many of my Tile Doctor colleagues would disagree with this approach opting to source the correct tile and rebuild the damaged section however unfortunately in this case we didn’t have the time or the budget. My first action was to use a brush and vacuum to remove as much loose debris and dust as possible. I followed this by agitating the tiles with a dilution of Tile Doctor Pro Clean which is a strong alkaline product and safe to use on tile and stone. I use a combination of a coarse burnishing pad fitted to a rotary machine and hand held brushes, in order to get the floor clean. The resulting slurry was then rinsed and removed using a wet vacuum. This process was repeated twice followed by a thorough rinse to ensure any trace of cleaning agent had been removed and the floor neutralised. As this was such an old property, I then used a steamer to heat up the tiles in order to draw out any contaminants and assist with the drying process. I installed a fan to dry the floor before starting repairs, mixing up some coloured grout and filling all holes and cracks along the edges, including the doormat area. I allowed the coloured grout to dry overnight, before hand painting the black and Terracotta tiles. These were then given time to dry (about a couple of hours). Following this, I carefully painted in the other colours: brown and cream. The overall effect was quite convincing and you had to look very closely to notice. Due to the fact that there were other tradesmen working in the house at the time, the floors were sheeted up to protect from additional dust and muck. I then left the house for a week, allowing the floor ample time to dry completely in preparation for sealing. Upon my return, I took damp meter readings, and once satisfied with the dryness of the tiles, I began the sealing process with the impregnating, colour-enhancing sealer Tile Doctor Colour Grow. The sealer provides both durable surface protection and an aesthetically pleasing matte finish. The below photos show how the product has enriched the colours with the two coats applied. The process of restoring this wonderful Victorian Quarry tiled floor was certainly time consuming, but very rewarding. I am exceptionally pleased with the results myself, and my client couldn’t have been happier and I’m sure the newly revitalised hallway will have been a talking point for all their visitors during the Christmas break. Ben is an experienced DIYer although he hadn’t ever done an IKEA kitchen design before. “I wasn’t familiar with the product line, nor how to get started with the process. The design we came up with was largely our design, and we spent countless hours researching the door fronts, and of course decided on the VOXTORP doors in Walnut from IKEA. We find IKEA offers great quality for the money and we love the neat customization options.” Ben does admit that he and his wife often second guessed their design decisions, however. Therefore, they recruited IKD to help them develop a layout that would work stylistically and functionally for their needs. “Having an IKEA design expert from IKD provide additional insight was incredibly helpful for us to move forward though the process,” he says.”But as an avid DIYer I felt this was well within my realm to complete.” And the design certainly was! In fact, Ben says the installation process was seamless. He does mention that the plumbing and electrical was relocated to accommodate the IKEA kitchenette layout though. “The overall experience of building the boxes was straight forward. Once you get the hang of doing one, they almost all go together about the same. It was a rewarding experience seeing everything come together,” he notes.

HUGE transformation! The homes in this area quintessentially have smaller kitchens that dining rooms. In addition, there is no open floor concept so traffic flow is restricted. In this design, we choose to take over the dining room! The fortunate part is the sunroom on the backside of the home was conditioned as part of the home, so the furniture and space plan transformed this room into the "dining room". What a beautiful thing to have on the backside of the home where the view is great (future pictures to come!). The improvements and challenges were to remove the wall between the kitchen and the formal dining room (which was rarely used) and then extend the kitchen into that space. !! This is a great challenge because it changes the flow, original architectural patterns to the home! We (client included) the plan achieved just that with some sacrifices -- but honestly, with so many more rewards. AFTER PHOTO. One of our past clients enjoyed spending time outdoors on her deck, but her 2 cats let her know that they wanted to join her (meow, meow) and partake of the sunshine too. She reached out to us and we crafted an outdoor space - catio - for her and her two feline friends. It was a fun project. So rewarding to see how the finished product is greatly impacting our client and her kitties for the better. They all love it!

A glance upward rewards the eye with luxe beauty and stunning geometry. Practically speaking, the additional roofed space will protect them from the elements, while the screens will keep flying pests and biting bugs far, far away. The increased footprint of the flagstone grill patio will give the family chef faster and more efficient access into and out of the patio, right outside one of the new screened doors.

This remarkable home on a two-acre lake bluff provides an inspiring retreat with multiple indoor and outdoor casual living spaces. A large extended family is always welcome to the many varied gathering spots on the grounds, all with glorious lake views. A landscape plan developed in collaboration with Swan Architecture included new additions, a detached garage, and site amenities that keep Lake Minnetonka visible from almost every angle. The design features a deck that overlooks the lake with an outdoor kitchen, an intermediate level patio with rustic fi re pit, and a lower level pool and pool terrace, all with ample entertainment space. Should the wind pick up on the lakeside, a generous front courtyard is a calm retreat for listening to a crackling fi re in the cut stone fi replace and hearing water murmur from custom black granite fountain. When Irvine designer, Richard Bustos’ client decided to remodel his Orange County 4,900 square foot home into a contemporary space, he immediately thought of Cantoni. His main concern though was based on the assumption that our luxurious modern furnishings came with an equally luxurious price tag. It was only after a visit to our Irvine store, where the client and Richard connected that the client realized our extensive collection of furniture and accessories was well within his reach.

“Richard was very thorough and straight forward as far as pricing,” says the client. "I became very intrigued that he was able to offer high quality products that I was looking for within my budget.” The next phases of the project involved looking over floor plans and discussing the client’s vision as far as design. The goal was to create a comfortable, yet stylish and modern layout for the client, his wife, and their three kids. In addition to creating a cozy and contemporary space, the client wanted his home to exude a tranquil atmosphere. Drawing most of his inspiration from Houzz, (the leading online platform for home remodeling and design) the client incorporated a Zen-like ambiance through the distressed greyish brown flooring, organic bamboo wall art, and with Richard’s help, earthy wall coverings, found in both the master bedroom and bathroom. Over the span of approximately two years, Richard helped his client accomplish his vision by selecting pieces of modern furniture that possessed the right colors, earthy tones, and textures so as to complement the home’s pre-existing features. The first room the duo tackled was the great room, and later continued furnishing the kitchen and master bedroom. Living up to its billing, the great room not only opened up to a breathtaking view of the Newport coast, it also was one great space. Richard decided that the best option to maximize the space would be to break the room into two separate yet distinct areas for living and dining. While exploring our online collections, the client discovered the Jasper Shag rug in a bold and vibrant green. The grassy green rug paired with the sleek Italian made Montecarlo glass dining table added just the right amount of color and texture to compliment the natural beauty of the bamboo sculpture. The client happily adds, “I’m always receiving complements on the green rug!” Once the duo had completed the dining area, they worked on furnishing the living area, and later added pieces like the classic Renoir bed to the master bedroom and Crescent Console to the kitchen, which adds both balance and sophistication. The living room, also known as the family room was the central area where Richard’s client and his family would spend quality time. As a fellow family man, Richard understood that that meant creating an inviting space with comfortable and durable pieces of furniture that still possessed a modern flare. The client loved the look and design of the Mercer sectional. With Cantoni’s ability to customize furniture, Richard was able to special order the sectional in a fabric that was both durable and aesthetically pleasing. Selecting the color scheme for the living room was also greatly influenced by the client’s pre-existing artwork as well as unique distressed floors. Richard recommended adding dark pieces of furniture as seen in the Mercer sectional along with the Viera area rug. He explains, “The darker colors and contrast of the rug’s material worked really well with the distressed wood floor.” Furthermore, the comfortable American Leather Recliner, which was customized in red leather not only maximized the space, but also tied in the client’s picturesque artwork beautifully. The client adds gratefully, “Richard was extremely helpful with color; He was great at seeing if I was taking it too far or not enough.” It is apparent that Richard and his client made a great team. With the client’s passion for great design and Richard’s design expertise, together they transformed the home into a modern sanctuary. Working with this particular client was a very rewarding experience for Richard. He adds, “My client and his family were so easy and fun to work with. Their enthusiasm, focus, and involvement are what helped me bring their ideas to life. Metzger Design worked along side Bellevue Homes - a local developer/builder of high-end residential projects on this project. A rewarding process from the start - Bellevue Homes provided a clear concept for this 4,000 sf Craftsman style home and retained us to refine the massing and construction details. The home features a spacious great room and kitchen area with a dynamic loft area above, first floor master suite, and a general flow and openness well suited for modern living and entertaining.
