Photo credit: Tom Harris @ Hedrich Blessing Pearson Residence: Two large condominiums were combined by adding a stair in the center of the units where the previous dining rooms were located. The renovation creates a city living residence with over 6,000 SF overlooking an urban park and Lake Michigan. The glass enclosed TV module is back-lit with white LED light; the TV swings in a door to allow for views from the drawing room and the adjacent rooms in the space. The kitchen is hand-made in Canada using dark-taupe stained high-gloss doors, and is accented with a richly textured rough hewn glass tile backsplash. A Louis the 14th French designed bar is made Irish with a brass foot rail and comfortable overhang on the bar top. Dark espresso stained oak floors offset the stone colored walls and the new white stair structure. Special steam saws were used to cut the 10 inch concrete slab stair opening while the residents lived in the apartment. A new steel tube stair is a canting vierendeel truss and is built in modules that were pre-built, cut, and re-assembled onsite. Walnut treads were used to hold up the glass railings and balustrade. A bespoke wool carpet runs in the center of the stair and is held in place with rug hangers. Light beige Crema Luna limestone tile risers are used on the raised platform below the stair.

These clients decided to make this home their Catalina Mountain homestead, after living abroad for many years. The prior yard enclosed only a small portion of their available property, and a wall obstructed their city lights view of northern Tucson. We expanded the yard outward to take advantage of the space and to also integrate the topography change into a 360 vanishing edge pool. The home previously had log columns in keeping with a territorial motif. To bring it up to date, concrete cylindrical columns were put in their place, which allowed us to expand the shaded locations throughout the yard in an updated way, as seen by the new retractable canvas shade structures. Constructed by Mike Rowland, you can see how well he pulled off the projects precise detailing of Bianchi's Design. Note the cantilevered concrete steps, the slot of fire in the midst of the spa, the stair treads that don't quite touch the adjacent walls, and the columns that float just above the pool water.

Designed and built in conjunction with Freemont #2, this home pays homage to surrounding architecture, including that of St. James Lutheran Church. The home is comprised of stately, well-proportioned rooms; significant architectural detailing; appropriate spaces for today's active family; and sophisticated wiring to service any HD video, audio, lighting, HVAC and / or security needs. The focal point of the first floor is the sweeping curved staircase, ascending through all three floors of the home and topped with skylights. Surrounding this staircase on the main floor are the formal living and dining rooms, as well as the beautifully-detailed Butler's Pantry. The original gardens of this Fort Worth estate date back to 1936 when the famous Kansas City landscape architecture firm Hare & Hare designed the grounds featuring sculpted boxwood english knot garden. The homeowner purchased the adjacent lot and called on the accomplished Dallas & Fort Worth architect Ralph Duesing to create a design to honor the original design but scale to encompass the full four and a half acres. This extensive remodel included the extension of the perimeter walls, wrought iron elements and the addition of a classical carved limestone lily pond and Diana sculptured pedestal by Davis Cornell.

The views to Chicago’s iconic city skyline are unmatched from our clients’ 4th floor Lincoln Park rooftop. Highlighting this outstanding feature was first and foremost in our design approach, so that unobstructed views could be enjoyed in all directions. We began by creating several functional spaces that flow together as a whole. By introducing multiple levels of ipe decking, porcelain pavers, and synthetic turf we were able to break up the space visually and programmatically. The lower landing features an intimate Holly Hunt table paired with Janus et Cie chairs perfect for enjoying the fresh morning air over coffee. On the same level, the adjacent bar allows for cocktail hour entertainment while enjoying the company of guests and the views to the city’s north. One level up, a synthetic turf walkway inlaid with porcelain steppers is flanked by custom aluminum and ipe containers planted with exuberant native plantings and seasonal arrangements. The walkway leads to a viewing station at the parapet wall, where views of the downtown Chicago skyline are magnificent. Lastly, another step up brings one to the casual lounge area replete with furnishings of all-weather plush seating by Gloster, where views are maintained while sitting down. An oversized custom fire table and heated Tuuci umbrella combat the evening chill while friends enjoy the skyline as it comes alive in the evening hours. Programable landscape lighting illuminating the transitional spaces and lush plantings provides the client full control through their home automation system. The hidden speakers within the landscape resonates music throughout the space to keep the sounds of the city at bay. This transformed space has provided the client with a true urban retreat that is fit for quiet family gatherings or energetic events, where all parties can fully enjoy the beautiful city skyline.
