ASID Design Excellence First Place Residential – Kitchen and Bathroom: Michael Merrill Design Studio was approached three years ago by the homeowner to redesign her kitchen. Although she was dissatisfied with some aspects of her home, she still loved it dearly. As we discovered her passion for design, we began to rework her entire home for consistency including this bathroom.

As the construction went on, the homeowners, knowing they would not be at the house year round decided the easiest way to keep the house winterized was to install the Nest thermostat so that they would be able to adjust the settings as the weather changed, even if they were not at the house itself. The Nest is hooked to wi-fi and can be adjusted from the owner's phone and also alerts the homeowner when the temperature becomes low enough in the home to cause problems. The Nest will also alert your phone if the power was to shut off, which in Upstate NY, it is known to do. Living in the north country, you see many families having to drain pipes, set up heat cables to prevent ice dams in valleys and lower pitched roofs, and other yearly projects so that they do not have to worry about their pipes bursting, their roofs falling in, and other calamities. The homeowners continue to rave about the Nest year after year.
