The masonry grill station and adjoining bar added maximum entertaining value for our clients. The grill station is wrapped in Eden cut stone veneer with a detail sailor row of the home’s bricks. A thermal bluestone coping provides a clean uniform surface and matches the adjoining patio. Included within the grill station are a ProFire 48” gas grill, a double gas side-burner, a large Kamoda Joe grill, a pullout trash and recycling drawer and a double wet sink/bar station. The raised bar area provides ample casual dining space and view of the outdoor television under pavilion. A custom cedar trellis supports Sweet Autumn clematis and has integrated LED under-ledge lighting.

Water was an issue flowing down the mountain, so many rocked swales divert the flow. The area which we are presenting is the rear of the house that will be used to entertain family and friends, a place to unwind in the evenings and weekends. We designed the outdoor areas to meet the needs and desires of the owners. When one walks through the breezeway not only to see an expansive valley view, but a relaxing fireplace and living area below where relaxing begins. Walk down the stairway of natural cut stone, you wonder through a landscaped garden onto the living area patio. Looking to your left is the pool with ample hardscape pool deck; large enough for a party or just the intimacy of two. Separating, yet joining the two areas is the grilling island, bar and outdoor wood burning oven. On the other side of the living area we go down a few steps to the raised planters and conservatory/greenhouse where plant are enjoyed from seedling to flower, or one can read a good book. Each area has it’s own personality for conversation or contemplation. The area is surrounded with plantings to provide color or to silhouette on the gray winter sky.

A new porch highlights the front door, once difficult to find, on this variation of a traditional Cape Cod home. Ample windows on axis with the living room entry focus a visitor’s attention on a sun filled garden terrace and water feature. From above, light streams through a ridge clerestory, inspired by the client’s love of the Stanford University Barn’s similar roof detail. The newly raised ceiling creates a lofty, inviting space. Below the living room, a new basement home theater is finished with fine wood paneling and accented with art from their collection.

A cramped and compartmentalized master bath was turned into a lavish spa bath retreat in this Northwest Suburban home. Removing a tight walk in closet and opening up the master bath to the adjacent no longer needed children’s bedroom allowed for the new master closet to flow effortlessly out of the now expansive master bath. A corner angled shower allows ample space for showering with a convenient bench seat that extends directly into the whirlpool tub deck. Herringbone tumbled marble tile underfoot creates a beautiful pattern that is repeated in the heated bathroom floor. The toilet becomes unobtrusive as it hides behind a half wall behind the door to the master bedroom, and a slight niche takes its place to hold a decorative accent. The sink wall becomes a work of art with a furniture-looking vanity graced with a functional decorative inset center cabinet and two striking marble vessel bowls with wall mounted faucets and decorative light fixtures. A delicate water fall edge on the marble counter top completes the artistic detailing. A new doorway between rooms opens up the master bath to a new His and Hers walk-in closet, complete with an island, a makeup table, a full length mirror and even a window seat.

A leaky tub and some cracked tiles convinced our returning clients that an update to their primary suite was long overdue. The old bathroom’s traditional travertine tiles, stained wood cabinets, and bulky tub deck made the space feel heavy and dated. Our goal was to create a sophisticated, light, and serene space that was more aligned with their evolving style. Replacing the sizeable tub deck with a freestanding bathtub opened up the room and allowed us to expand the walk-in shower. A slim niche was strategically tucked into the corner ensuring products are within easy reach. Separate his and hers vanities provide ample storage with an abundance of drawers.. The dramatic veining in the marble-look porcelain provides the perfect backdrop for the minimalist tub and modern plumbing fixtures while the natural marble in the shower plays off the warm golds and grays. With thoughtful design choices and striking finishes, we transformed a dark and drab bathroom into a refined and refreshing retreat.

Andrea had a custom dining table built into the island to provide ample seating and ensure the entire family could enjoy meals together. The kitchen’s monochromatic color palette was carried throughout the interiors allowing the home’s beautiful waterfront views to take center stage. Adding richness and texture to each room, Andrea selected sculptural, modern furnishings to complete the space and bring the Patel’s vision to life.

Expansive outdoor spaces featuring fire features and seating areas are connected by a curved metal staircase set over a blackened steel reflecting pool, adding a graphic element to the rear of the home. Clerestory glazing in an elevated roof area offers an opening into the tree canopy towards the front of the property and allows light to permeate the interior of the home, while full height windows throughout maximize the impressive views. Living spaces throughout provide ample room for entertaining and comfort. Creativity is shown in the many colourful and whimsical accents. The master bedroom features two ensuite baths - a unique request that makes good sense for the owners. Spaces for work, writing and art were given priority reflecting the values and livelihood of our clients. Projecting from a stone clad wall, cantilevered white oak stair treads lead to an extraordinary wine display that incorporates a sculptural component taken as a memento from our client’s work as a producer in the film industry, adding a strong personal dimension. The before and after photos really do the talking for these pictures. By painting the paneled walls and pulling up the aged carpet this home was completely transformed. The architectural details such as the arched doorways and vaulted ceiling are much more noticeable. The original wood floor hidden beneath the carpet was the perfect color match to the trim work and created the perfect anchor to pull the entire room together. The furniture being arranged on the far end of the room (rather than the middle) allows for easy TV viewing and true 'living space'. This also allowed ample space for a wine bar and easy walk through to the screened in porch area.

A polished Delta Dryden sink faucet was selected to match the updated cabinet hardware. The vanity location with ample countertop surface for dual use contributes to a direct path to the shower and toilet area in the new layout. Painted maple cabinetry emulates the home's elegant woodwork detailing with beautiful crown molding extending over the vanity mirror. To reinforce flow, provide low maintenance durability and meet the homeowner's timeless taste, the shower walls and bathroom wainscot are adorned with an oversized ceramic subway tile and classic cap. Travertine floor tile and curved shower mosaic ceiling compliment the painted cabinet and tranquil wall color. The decorative glass mosaic wainscot banding tile, shower feature wall and accessory corner lends itself to the calming waters of their childhood homes in Puerto Rico, close to the homeowners' hearts.

A young couple with three small children purchased this full floor loft in Tribeca in need of a gut renovation. The existing apartment was plagued with awkward spaces, limited natural light and an outdated décor. It was also lacking the required third child’s bedroom desperately needed for their newly expanded family. StudioLAB aimed for a fluid open-plan layout in the larger public spaces while creating smaller, tighter quarters in the rear private spaces to satisfy the family’s programmatic wishes. 3 small children’s bedrooms were carved out of the rear lower level connected by a communal playroom and a shared kid’s bathroom. Upstairs, the master bedroom and master bathroom float above the kid’s rooms on a mezzanine accessed by a newly built staircase. Ample new storage was built underneath the staircase as an extension of the open kitchen and dining areas. A custom pull out drawer containing the food and water bowls was installed for the family’s two dogs to be hidden away out of site when not in use. All wall surfaces, existing and new, were limited to a bright but warm white finish to create a seamless integration in the ceiling and wall structures allowing the spatial progression of the space and sculptural quality of the midcentury modern furniture pieces and colorful original artwork, painted by the wife’s brother, to enhance the space. The existing tin ceiling was left in the living room to maximize ceiling heights and remain a reminder of the historical details of the original construction. A new central AC system was added with an exposed cylindrical duct running along the long living room wall. A small office nook was built next to the elevator tucked away to be out of site.
