Granite countertops can last a lifetime. It contains no harmful chemicals and do not emit harmful radiation or gasses. Granite is heat resistant and is one of the most heat-resistant countertops on the market. You can place a hot pan out of the oven directly onto the countertop surface. Experts do recommend the use of a trivet when using appliances that emit heat for long periods of time, such as crockpots. Since the material is so dense, there is a small possibility heating one area of the top and not the entire thing, could cause the countertop to crack.
Granite is scratch resistant. You can cut on it, but it will dull your knives! Granite scores a seven on Moh’s hardness scale.
Granite countertops are considered to be a low maintenance countertop surface. The likelihood of needing to be repaired or resurfaced is low. Granite is a porous material. Most fabricators will apply a sealer to granite countertops before they are installed which will protect them from absorbing liquids too quickly. Many sealers last more than 10 years before needing to be reapplied. When they do need to be reapplied, it is something that most homeowners can do on their own as the process is similar to cleaning. Darker granites are very dense and sometimes don’t even require a sealer.
When it comes to pricing, there are a lot of variables such as edge profile, total square footage, backsplash, etc. Don’t be fooled by the stereotype that all granite is expensive. Lower-range granites will cost less than high-range laminate. Though granite countertops are not considered “low range” in pricing, there are a lot of affordable options.
If you are looking for something truly unique, consider an exotic granite. Some quarries are not easily accessible and/or only able to be quarried for short periods of time throughout the year. If these circumstances exist in a quarry with gorgeous stone, the price will be driven upward.
You won’t find a lot of solid patterns or bright colors, but both do exist. Also, watch for a large range of color and pattern within the same color of stone. It’s always a good idea to view the exact slab(s) that will be fabricated for your kitchen to make sure they are what you expected to see from the sample. Another factor is that many exotic types of granite have huge flowing waves, and a small sample will not be an accurate representation of the whole slab.
Granite countertops are very resistant to chemicals. Acids and bases will not harm the material.

Our clients purchased this older home with three separate additions. The first addition was a slab tie-in. The second two additions were achieved with off-grade floor joist systems. To further complicate this floor, our clients replaced their cast iron waste lines with PVC. We recommended a decoupling membrane for a plank porcelain tile throughout the entire home. Here we ground down the trench work, feathered the transitions, and removed the high spots throughout the floor in preparation for the crack isolation membrane application. We then sealed/primed the cutback adhesives before applying the Ditra.

It was a pleasure to help this single dad transform a previous French Country motif into a Handsome Space with Masculine Vibe. The homeowner loves the blues you find in the Caribbean so we used those as accent colors throughout the rooms.
Entry
We painted the walls Sherwin Williams’ Latte (SW6108) to add warmth. We accessorized the homeowner’s beautiful burl wood cabinet with vibrant artwork and whimsical Chinese horses. I always recommend task lighting in a Foyer, if possible, and the rectangular lamp shade is the perfect shape to fit on the small end of the cabinet.
Powder Room
I adore the Candace Olson wallpaper we used in the Powder Room. The blocks look like sections of wood. It works great with the existing granite. Other examples of wallpaper here and here.
Great Room
We touched every surface in this Great Room from painting the walls Nomadic Desert (SW6107) to painting the ceiling Double Latte (SW9108) to make the room feel cozier to replacing the carpet with this transitional style with striated pattern to painting the white built-ins.
Furniture placement was a real challenge because the grand piano needed to stay without blocking the traffic flow through the space. The homeowner also wanted us to incorporate his chess table and chairs. We centered a small seating area in front of the fireplace utilizing two oversized club chairs and an upholstered ottoman with a wood tray that slides. The wood bases on the chairs helps their size not overpower the room. The velvet ottoman fabric with navy, azure, and teal blues is a showstopper.
We used the homeowner’s wonderful collection of unique puzzle boxes to accessorize the built-ins. We just added some pops of blues, greens and silver. The homeowner loves sculptural objects so the nickel twig wall decor was the perfect focal point above the mantle. We opted not to add anything to the mantle so it would not distract from the art piece.
We added decorative drapery panels installed on short rods between each set of doors. The homeowner was open to this abstract floral pattern in greens and blues!
We reupholstered the cushions for the chess table chairs in a fun geometric fabric that coordinates with the panel fabric. The homeowner does not use this set of doors to access the deck so we were able to position the table directly in front of them.
Kelly Sisler of Kelly Faux Creations worked her magic on the built-ins. We used Sherwin Williams’ Mega Greige (SW7031) as the base and then applied a heavy bronze glaze. It completely transformed the Great Room. Other examples of painting built-ins here and here.
We hoped you enjoyed this Handsome Space with Masculine Vibe. It was quite a transformation!

This property was in theLadbroke Grove area of West London near Kensington. The client had found an old and probably original black and white checkered pattern Victorian tiled floor under their cork tiled flooring. They also reported that it was badly damaged so I thought it would be best if I paid them a visit first to see how extensive the damage was and whether it was repairable. The floor was in a quite a state, the tiles were covered in glue from the cork and had several areas had been back filled with cement.
I reassured them that the damage could be rectified, and that it would be possible to completely restore the floor back to a good standard. I would have to remove the glue, remove the cement that had been used to level the floor and replace with reclaimed tiles to match. They were relieved to find out it could be done and happy with my quote I was instructed to go ahead with the work.
We started by taping up the skirting boards to protect the woodwork. With this done attention was turned to the glue which was softened using a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Remove and Go so it could be carefully scraped off. Multiple techniques and tools were needed to remove the glue including hand-held scrappers and a black pad fitted to a buffing machine. For the stubborn areas steam was applied to help lift the adhesive out the tile.
Once all the glue was removed the floor was rinsed and the alkaline cleaner neutralised with Tile Doctor Grout Clean Up which further cleaned the tiles and removed old traces of grout from the floor. Old floors like this generally don’t have a damp proof membrane underneath so the acids in the Grout Clean-up also counter any efflorescent salts trapped in the tile.
Once this was completed the slurry was removed with a wet vacuum and left to fully dry out overnight.
The following day focus turned to repairing the areas of the floor where the tiles were missing or broken. The main issue being the cemented areas, we see this a lot with Victorian Hallways and generally what happens is a heating engineer digs out the floor to install pipework. Not being tilers, your average plumber then repairs the floor with a self-levelling cement that brings the level up to the surface of the tile so it can be covered with lino, carpet of in this case cork.
The sub floor was then rebuilt with rapid setting self-levelling compound but this time to below the level of the tile.
Once the new base was dry it was a just a question of re-tiling with the replacement tiles to match the original checkered pattern. The replacement reproduction tiles were sourced from Original Features in Crouch End North London. After grouting we left the floor to dry out over the weekend.
When we returned to seal the floor our first step was to check the floor was dry using a moisture meter. This is critical as the sealant will not cure correctly if there is too much moisture in the floor. In this case the extra two days we had allowed had done its job and the test had confirmed it was ready to accept a sealer.
The client wanted the floor finish not to be too shiny once sealed so we opted to seal with two coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go Extra. This is good choice for old Victorian floors such as this example as it’s special acrylic-based formula allows for moisture vapour transmission which as mentioned previously is a concern where no damp proof membrane has been installed.
I’m please to confirm my clients were delighted with the result, as you can see from the pictures the black and white floor restoration makes for a dramatic entrance well in keeping with the style of the property. For aftercare I recommended the use of Tile Doctor Neutral Tile Cleaner which will keep the tiles in good condition going forward without damaging the new sealer.

Protect Your Beautiful Fruit Trees
Apple scab and Pear Trellis Rust are very common diseases, and two of the most aesthetically damaging diseases of fruit trees. Very susceptible trees become defoliated by mid-summer, which weakens the trees over time and can even cause death.
Fungicides must be applied preventively to successfully manage Apple Scab and Pear trellis Rust. Spores are released so early in the growing season, fungicide sprays must begin when the first green leaf tips emerge in spring. A series of three treatments performed approximately 7-10 days apart are recommended for best control.

Creating a comfortable outdoor living space is a priority for many homeowners and DIY enthusiasts. With rising summer temperatures, installing a shade tarp in your backyard offers an affordable and effective solution for sun protection. We’ve developed this detailed, step-by-step guide to help you confidently install a shade tarp that not only shields you from the sun but also adds aesthetic appeal to your outdoor area.
Benefits of Installing a Backyard Shade Tarp
Before diving into the installation process, let’s explore the key benefits of having a backyard shade tarp:
Provides UV Protection: Keeps your family and guests safe from harmful sun exposure.
Reduces Outdoor Temperatures: Creates a cooler, more enjoyable outdoor space.
Protects Outdoor Furniture: Extends the life of patio furniture by reducing sun damage.
Enhances Outdoor Aesthetics: Adds a modern, stylish look to your yard.
Budget-Friendly: More affordable compared to permanent structures like pergolas.
Materials and Tools You’ll Need
To begin your DIY backyard shade project, gather the following materials and tools:
Materials:
Shade tarp (UV-resistant and breathable)
Sturdy posts or existing structures (trees, fences, walls)
Mounting hardware (eye bolts, D-rings, turnbuckles, snap hooks)
Nylon or polyester rope, or stainless-steel wire
Concrete (if installing new posts)
Tools:
Power drill
Measuring tape
Level
Ladder
Wrench or adjustable spanner
Post hole digger (if installing new posts)
Step 1: Plan Your Shade Tarp Layout
The first step in installing your backyard shade tarp is careful planning. Take time to assess your outdoor area and answer these key questions:
Where is the sun’s path throughout the day?
What size and shape of tarp best suits your space?
Will you anchor the tarp to existing structures or install new posts?
What height do you want the tarp to sit at for maximum shade and airflow?
Pro Tip: Use string or garden hoses to visualize the tarp layout on the ground before making permanent decisions.
Step 2: Measure and Mark Anchor Points
Once you’ve determined the tarp’s location and orientation:
Measure the tarp dimensions.
Mark the exact points where each corner of the tarp will be anchored.
Ensure that the anchor points are at least 5–10% longer than the tarp size to allow for tensioning and slight adjustments.
Consider slope angles for water runoff. Aim for at least a 20-degree angle to prevent water pooling on the tarp.
Step 3: Install Support Posts (If Necessary)
If your backyard lacks existing anchor points like trees or fences, you’ll need to install sturdy support posts:
Dig post holes at least 24 inches deep and 8-12 inches wide for stability.
Set posts in concrete, making sure they remain plumb and level.
Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24–48 hours before applying tension from the tarp.
We recommend using pressure-treated wood, galvanized steel poles, or aluminum posts for longevity and strength.
Step 4: Install Mounting Hardware
With your anchor points ready, it’s time to install the necessary hardware:
Attach eye bolts or pad eyes securely into walls, posts, or other fixed structures.
For added flexibility and adjustability, install turnbuckles or tensioners to fine-tune the tarp’s tightness.
Connect snap hooks, D-rings, or carabiners to make assembly and disassembly easier.
Make sure all hardware is rated for outdoor use to prevent rust and corrosion.
Step 5: Attach and Tension the Shade Tarp
Now it’s time for the most satisfying part—mounting the shade tarp:
Begin by attaching one corner of the tarp to an anchor point.
Gradually attach the remaining corners, moving diagonally for even tension.
Adjust each connection point using your turnbuckles, ropes, or cables.
Pull the tarp tight enough to avoid sagging, but not so tight that it risks tearing.
Check that the tarp maintains the desired slope for rainwater runoff and adjust tension as needed.
Step 6: Final Adjustments and Safety Check
Before enjoying your new shaded area:
Inspect all anchor points and hardware for stability.
Test the tarp’s tension and make adjustments for even distribution.
Ensure that no sharp edges or loose connections remain that could damage the tarp or pose a safety hazard.
Confirm that the tarp is secure in windy conditions by giving it a gentle tug.
If you live in an area with frequent high winds, consider removing the tarp during storms to prevent damage.
Step 7: Enjoy Your Shaded Backyard Oasis
Once installed, your backyard shade tarp provides a comfortable and protective space for outdoor gatherings, relaxation, or family activities. You can decorate underneath with outdoor furniture, string lights, or potted plants to create a personalized outdoor retreat.
Maintenance Tips for Long-Lasting Shade Tarp Performance
To extend the life of your shade tarp, follow these maintenance guidelines:
Regularly check for wear and tear, especially around anchor points and seams.
Clean the tarp periodically with mild soap and water to prevent mildew buildup.
Store the tarp indoors during harsh weather seasons if it's not designed for year-round use.
Tighten hardware as needed to maintain proper tension and avoid sagging.
By following these simple care steps, your shade tarp will continue to deliver years of sun protection and outdoor comfort.
Conclusion: Upgrade Your Outdoor Space with a DIY Shade Tarp
Installing a shade tarp in your backyard is a cost-effective and rewarding DIY project. With careful planning, quality materials, and proper installation techniques, you’ll enjoy cool, shaded outdoor living all season long. This step-by-step guide ensures your project goes smoothly from start to finish.

Quiet luxury encourages you to invest in your home, not just furnish it. This trend is about incorporating select high-quality pieces into your contemporary space to elevate the aesthetic. Importantly, quiet luxury is not about filling a room with finely-made furnishings - instead, it’s about using only one or two high-quality pieces to instill a subtle sense of sophistication.
To create this look, start by finding finely-made items that complement your space and showcase a few refined design elements. Our designers recommend looking for items that speak to you and are made using premium, long-lasting construction techniques and high-quality materials like solid hardwood and top grain leather.
The other aspect of quiet luxury to consider has to do with the “quiet” part of the name. A room with the quiet luxury look will contain a few high-end pieces that you’ve invested in, but the pieces shouldn’t steal too much attention with flashy elements and glossy finishes. Quiet luxury shines through moody tones and traditional color palettes, which is why quiet luxury statement pieces are often dressed in dark colors or deep earth tones for a distinctive atmosphere. Another way high-quality furnishings can have a "quiet" look is through the use of aging techniques applied to their surface, which delivers a perfectly understated, timeworn aesthetic.

Maintaining a pest-free home requires attention throughout the year. Seasonal changes affect pest behavior, and understanding these patterns can save homeowners from costly damage and health hazards. In this guide, we will explore practical strategies for spring pest prevention tips, ensuring your property stays protected through every season. From spotting early signs to implementing proactive measures, these steps empower homeowners to take control before infestations occur.
Understanding Seasonal Pest Patterns
Pests adapt to changing weather, and knowing their patterns helps prevent infestations effectively.
Spring: Awakening Pests
Spring signals the end of winter dormancy for many pests. Rodents, ants, and termites start seeking food and warmth. Effective spring pest prevention tips include:
● Cleaning gutters and removing debris
● Sealing cracks and gaps in exterior walls
● Inspecting wood piles and compost areas
● Monitoring early signs of termite activity
Pro Tip: Conduct a termite inspection or a professional evaluation to catch infestations early before they spread.
Summer: Peak Pest Season
Warm temperatures accelerate pest breeding cycles. For a comprehensive summer pest prevention guide:
● Maintain lawns and trim vegetation away from homes
● Check window and door screens for tears
● Store food in sealed containers
● Inspect water sources that attract mosquitoes
Do You Know? Mosquitoes can lay eggs in a teaspoon of water. Eliminating stagnant water is crucial to reducing their population.
Fall: Preparing for Winter
As temperatures drop, pests search for warm indoor spaces. Key actions include:
● Inspecting for winter rodent entry points
● Sealing attic vents, crawl spaces, and foundation gaps
● Cleaning storage areas to minimize hiding spots
● Checking chimney and fireplace openings
Quick Fact: Rodents can enter homes through openings as small as ¼ inch.
Seasonal Pest Checklist for Homeowners
Creating a structured seasonal pest checklist simplifies preventive measures and ensures nothing is overlooked.

Common Pests and Their Seasonal Behaviors
Understanding how different pests behave each season helps homeowners take timely action to protect their property.
● Ants and Termites: Ants emerge in spring seeking food, while termites become active and can damage wood unnoticed. Early detection is critical.
● Rodents and Mice: Fall and winter increase rodent intrusions. Block all entry points and keep food sealed.
● Mosquitoes and Flies: Summer creates the ideal breeding environment for mosquitoes. Eliminate standing water and use physical barriers like nets.
● Spiders and Other Insects: Seasonal shifts cause spiders to move indoors. Regular vacuuming and decluttering reduce hiding spots.
Eco-Friendly Prevention Methods
● Use natural repellents like peppermint oil or diatomaceous earth
● Encourage beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, to reduce pest populations
● Plant pest-deterring plants near home boundaries, like marigolds or lavender
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
Adopt an IPM approach by combining physical barriers, monitoring, and environmentally safe treatments. This minimizes chemical use while maintaining a pest-free home.
