CEU CLASS DESCRIPTION:
LEARNING OBJECTIVES of “Controlling and Isolating Sound with Design & Construction”
• Define the importance of controlling sound.
• Define how much sound isolation is required in various circumstances.
• List the three tools: mass, absorption, and mechanical isolation and the role of each tool.
• Outline design considerations related to the construction of specialty rooms.
Controlling and Isolating Sound is tricky—without the correct tools, the right people, and the proper design, the results are often
disastrous. Participants in this course will review the needs for creating sound for isolated specialty spaces and discuss how much
sound isolation is needed in varying circumstances. In addition, attendees will dive into the three tools of sound isolation—mass, absorption and
mechanical isolation and the role of each in the design/build process, while discussing the process of designing and constructing the specialty space.
This course will also outline the benefits of working as a team with other trades to provide the client the expertise bringing about a well-designed and functional space.

Internationally recognized as an “innovative green project,” the award-winning Urban Reserve transformed a 10-acre site that had been an illegal landfill for more than 50 years into an exquisite Modernist community. In 2004, Urban Edge Developers in Dallas purchased the tract to construct a sustainable community, engaging landscape architect Kevin Sloan Studio and architects including Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. The refined aesthetics and careful grooming are equaled by environmentally sensitive details: the main street is a continuous biofilter; storm water is conveyed into rain gardens, separated by parking; cypress and reed plants filter water to sedimentation ponds for low-velocity drip irrigation. Concrete fragments and steel beams left over from its previous use as a landfill have been repurposed as “bricolage” for pavements and terraces. As part of the Dialogue, attendees will visit the landscapes of several private residences.
Burlock Interiors"A Refuge at Burning Man" was the concept for this bedroom. The client is an attendee of the giant arts festival which happens yearly in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. We chose a serene color palette with metallic touches and back-lit artwork by Peter Bynum. The shimmer and glow is a connection to the way the desert lights up at night from art cars, LED lights and glo sticks. Fun, but peaceful is what we were after.

Attendees learned the history about the design and evolution of the landmark property's surrounding gardens and fountains since the original design was approved in 1951.

Absolute ExhibitsThe Fishman custom booth flaunted 16 foot high, sleek white walls, 3D halo lit logos, two (2) private meeting rooms and two (2) product demo stations where attendees can test Fishman’s latest products.
Several precautions were set in place to properly insulate the individual rooms to block outside noise and keep music within the demo rooms.
For example, the rooms were spaced out as far apart as possible and utilized double-layered walls with built-in sound proofing to create an isolated experience for each room.
