Trying to find a quiet corner in one's house for an office can be tough, but it also can be an adventure!
Reworking spaces in our homes so that they work better for our families as they grow and change is something we all need to do from time to time-- and it can give your house a new lease on life.
One room that took on a new identity in this old farmhouse was the third floor attic space--a room that is much like a treehouse with its small footprint, high perch, lofty views of the landscape, and sloping ceiling.
The space has been many things over the past two decades- a bedroom, a guest room, a hang-out for kids... but NOW it is the 'world headquarters' for my client's business. :)
Adding all the funky touches that make it a cozy personal space made all the difference...like lots of live green plants, vintage original artwork, architectural salvage window sashes, a repurposed and repainted dresser from the 1940's, and, of course, my client's favorite photos.

Attic addition transforming the entry facade while increasing usable space above the second floor!

In this Doylestown attic, we installed faux white oak beams along the knee walls to address the challenge of the large bow in the roof. Due to the tight space caused by baffles and insulation, we used the faux beams to conceal the wiring for the ceiling fan and light fixtures. Enlarging the high window allowed abundant natural light in, along with the operable skylight, making it the sunniest, most refreshing room in the house.

We turned an attic into a writer's garret. Honey-toned wood floors combine with warm gray wainscoting to make for an appealing space. Lighting by Portland's own Cedar & Moss. A live-edge wall-to-wall walnut wood desk provides ample room for writing, and mapping out research and story materials. Custom file folder and shelves tuck underneath. A large built-in bookcase turns one half of the attic in to a library and reading room. Photos by Laurie Black.

The attic space was transformed from a cold storage area of 700 SF to useable space with closed mechanical room and 'stage' area for kids. Structural collar ties were wrapped and stained to match the rustic hand-scraped hardwood floors. LED uplighting on beams adds great daylight effects. Short hallways lead to the dormer windows, required to meet the daylight code for the space. An additional steel metal 'hatch' ships ladder in the floor as a second code-required egress is a fun alternate exit for the kids, dropping into a closet below. The main staircase entrance is concealed with a secret bookcase door. The space is heated with a Mitsubishi attic wall heater, which sufficiently heats the space in Wisconsin winters.

Another small house looking for "TLC". House was given an exterior refresher by opening up the front enclosed porch to an open porch for a more welcoming feel along with new windows and siding. On the interior we moved the front door and created an open floor plan and provided more light to turn this little old house in to a cute gem!
