The clients loved them in their old kitchen; we furnished and installed new and better-quality spinners storage units. *A unique opening between the kitchen and family room that allowed homeowners to pass meals through as they enjoyed a movie from the family room. *A Smart-Divide porcelain enamel sink with stainless steel grids allow plenty of room for dirty dishes, pots and pans as well as separate areas to prep and wash dishes as needed. * Anti-glare finishes were a must have for these clients; kitchen cabinetry in a matte gray neutral finish, faucet and cabinet hardware in a matte black finish and stunning Cambria quartz countertops in a suede finish set the stage. At completion phase, homeowners were ensured that they were receiving high-quality products, style and craftmanship in the most efficient time frame and were thrilled with look of their new kitchen that also provided plenty of prep, entertaining and seating space. A South End roof deck sounds delightful, but the existing condition of this deck was in desperate need of a face lift. The client wanted a more functional space with varied zones for different activities; comfortable seating to accommodate a group and intimate enough for two. They also wanted a professional type exterior kitchen with special grilling options. We were limited in our renovation options to the existing simple rectangular roof deck footprint. The design solution let site attributes such as views, sun path and cooking zone shape the project. Minimum maintenance materials such as "light block" countertops and ipe wood decking were employed. The new exterior room has a complete stainless steel kitchen and raised bar area. The kitchen, backed by tall woven screens of mahogany and stainless steel, anchored the room and shielded view from an adjacent roof deck. Multiple seating areas were incorporated to take advantage of the wide view of the South End & Back Bay. The free form lounge seating has a partial tall back acting as both a screen and barrier to vertigo. Once a disorganized and dated space, the client now has multi-functional space for outdoor entertaining and enjoyment.

The Prairie View project completely transformed the back outdoor living space and enhanced the curb appeal in the front of the property. A beautifully crafted deck now features a fire pit and also heating and cooling attributes to allow this space to be enjoyed year-round, along with the assistance of a roof addition. “Hygge”: the Danish esthetic characterized by cozy environments featuring natural materials, clean design, and light colors to fend off the doldrums of the long northern winters. Embodying these attributes is this welcoming space mixing colors and textures to spectacular effect. Pale wood-look porcelain tile flooring sets the tone. Traditional inset cabinetry with a delicate ogee inner profile is painted light blue on the perimeter and cream on the island. The ever-popular apron front sink adds charm. White oak floating shelves showcase decorative items and cookbooks. They sit adjacent to a bifold countertop wall cabinet that’s lined in more white oak; it conceals a freestanding microwave and abundant dishware storage. Appliances are paneled to match for a cohesive look. The crown jewel of the room, however, is the range and vent hood. For European flair, a CornuFe range in ivory with brass trim was chosen. A custom curved plaster hood is accented with white oak edging and sweeping corbels. Brass appears again in the faucet, the island pendants, and the eclectic mix of hardware: cupboard latches, bin pulls, and knobs. To complete the classic look, gray and honey-veined Danby marble countertops were selected, complemented by a handmade white subway backsplash tile.

Our inspiration for this home was an updated and refined approach to Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Prairie-style”; one that responds well to the harsh Central Texas heat. By DESIGN we achieved soft balanced and glare-free daylighting, comfortable temperatures via passive solar control measures, energy efficiency without reliance on maintenance-intensive Green “gizmos” and lower exterior maintenance. The client’s desire for a healthy, comfortable and fun home to raise a young family and to accommodate extended visitor stays, while being environmentally responsible through “high performance” building attributes, was met. Harmonious response to the site’s micro-climate, excellent Indoor Air Quality, enhanced natural ventilation strategies, and an elegant bug-free semi-outdoor “living room” that connects one to the outdoors are a few examples of the architect’s approach to Green by Design that results in a home that exceeds the expectations of its owners.
