Inspiration for a country kitchen remodel in Austin

Mid-Phase Firepit and seating area made from Pennsylvania bluestone and boulders. Many of the boulders were excavated from yard during construction of the house. Boulders from a nearby quarry were brought in to match the existing to blend seamlessly.

Situated on the edge of New Hampshire’s beautiful Lake Sunapee, this Craftsman-style shingle lake house peeks out from the towering pine trees that surround it. When the clients approached Cummings Architects, the lot consisted of 3 run-down buildings. The challenge was to create something that enhanced the property without overshadowing the landscape, while adhering to the strict zoning regulations that come with waterfront construction. The result is a design that encompassed all of the clients’ dreams and blends seamlessly into the gorgeous, forested lake-shore, as if the property was meant to have this house all along. The ground floor of the main house is a spacious open concept that flows out to the stone patio area with fire pit. Wood flooring and natural fir bead-board ceilings pay homage to the trees and rugged landscape that surround the home. The gorgeous views are also captured in the upstairs living areas and third floor tower deck. A refined expression of Organic Contemporary design, this luxury kitchen features integrated appliances, a sculptural 6-foot Galley Workstation with dual faucets, and custom cabinetry that blends seamlessly into the architecture. Natural textures, warm minimalism, and thoughtful functionality converge to create a kitchen that feels both grounded and elevated—tailored for both daily rituals and refined entertaining.

A former kitchen with a staggered sight line, tiled countertop, and brass trim gains a fresh perspective with small updates. The cabinetry was in excellent shape, so the kitchen was largely re-purposed with all the original cabinetry intact and the same footprint used. The wish list included extra storage and with a vaulted ceiling, the obvious choice was to gain additional storage in height. As the original cabinets were no longer being manufactured, glass front uppers were chosen and painted to match. With the addition of new side panels and crown moulding, the new uppers cabinets blend seamlessly in place. The pantry walls were also painted to match the cabinetry to give it the appearance of a built-in. This Modern Prairie Bungalow was designed to capture the natural beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains from every space within. The sprawling horizontal design and hipped roofs echo the surrounding mountain landscape. The color palette and natural materials help the home blend seamlessly into the Rockies with dark stained wood accents, textural stone, and smooth stucco. This 1930’s gem did not have a functional, beautiful kitchen. In fact, many cabinets barely opened, and some appliances didn’t even work. The top priority was to replace the cabinetry, appliances, and finishes in the main kitchen and butler’s pantry for better functionality. The original footprint was kept mostly intact, with only minor adjustments to improve flow, connectivity, and layout. Custom cabinetry was designed to enhance storage, and a suite of high-performance appliances was installed. Finishes like a herringbone tile floor and soapstone countertops were chosen for longevity and durability. The secondary goal was to match the beauty of the rest of the home, with traditional elements, symmetry, and warmth. Details like fluting on the range hood and a unique corbel shape mirror original moldings. Stained oak accents were color-matched to the home’s existing woodwork. White oak cabinet interiors and custom inserts create a furniture-like feel. The finished design blends seamlessly into the historic home, and also enhances functionality for day-to-day living, hosting, and gathering.
