Pink roses are displayed throughout this luxury café in Medina, Saudi Arabia, whether placed as centerpieces or lining the glass display unit atop the service counter, soft illumination enhance the sense of elegance to the interior.

With an open plan and exposed structure, every interior element had to be beautiful and functional. Here you can see the massive concrete fireplace as it defines four areas. On one side, it is a wood burning fireplace with firewood as it's artwork. On another side it has additional dish storage carved out of the concrete for the kitchen and dining. In a neighborhood known for its lavish, gilded retail spaces, this cafe continues Lincoln Lighthill Architect's exploration of modest materials utilized in elegant ways to reinforce the client's mission and ethos. A minimal palette of construction grade Douglass Fir plywood, stainless steel, and glass add texture and warmth to the existing space's exposed concrete floor and white painted walls. A folded stainless steel plate service bar puts pour-over and espresso coffee preparation at center stage. At the mezzanine, a planter filled with living plants takes advantage of a large existing skylight above, bringing the outdoors in and adding life, literally, to the space.

Bamboo floors' popularity has increased over the past few years as people have become more aware of the fragile state of the environment. Because it is a grass rather than a wood, it grows far more quickly than a tree. The plant's extensive root system continually grows underground and it replenishes itself naturally, as grass does. New growth, which springs out of the ground and can mature up to 24" in 24 hours and unlike trees, bamboo will regenerate quickly, making it a renewable resource.

The floor is really the focal point here, it kind of works the same way wallpaper would, but -- it’s on the floor. I love this graphic tile, patterned after Moroccan encaustic, or cement tile, but this one is actually porcelain at a very affordable price point and much easier to install than cement tile. Once we had homeowner buy-in on the floor choice, the rest of the space came together pretty easily – we are calling it “transitional, Moroccan, industrial.” Key elements are the traditional vanity, Moroccan shaped mirrors and flooring, and plumbing fixtures, coupled with industrial choices -- glass block window, a counter top that looks like cement but that is actually very functional Corian, sliding glass shower door, and simple glass light fixtures. The final space is bright, functional and stylish. Quite a transformation, don’t you think?
