The original Master bath was very dark and cavernous and needed some softness to oppose angled walls. A combination of light walls, and sleek floating cabinets, creates an overall softness in this Modern Masterpiece.

It is a great opportunity to create a home in Saint Louis, using design criteria, sensitivities and materials associated with the Northwest. Our clients, a world traveled couple whose second home is in Montana, commissioned us to do just that. Over six tons of stone were brought in from Montana to complement the hand built wooden trusses and rough-hewn lumber sourced locally. Having lived in Europe for many years, the couple is sophisticated with specific objectives. The beautiful millwork in the interior and exterior spaces reflects their taste. The gathering room has a vaulted ceiling but is not cavernous due to the dark elements created by the lumber and color selections. The wagon wheel light fixture is a focal point in the room, along with the Montanan stone floor to ceiling fireplace which mirrors the one outdoors. The millwork frames the room and provides the home with its lovely natural, rustic ambience which plays well with lighting and outdoor living spaces. The front façade is closed to the street, but the back explodes, with a wall of doors that open to the outdoor living and landscaping. Outdoor living space includes fabulous millwork, a beautiful stone fireplace which complements the interior fireplace, seating areas, a dining table and a full kitchen. The outdoor kitchen includes a grill, oven, storage, an icemaker and a refrigerator. The lower level is inviting with its millwork, it’s full bar and a home theatre. Again the timber frames the bar area and the rustic feel is defined by the millwork and the Montana stone. The ceiling is tongue in groove with decorative trusses that include peg details and corbels. Decorative outdoor lanterns add to the ambience. Log storage integrated into the main feature, the fireplace. Attention to detail include unusual millwork and lanterns.

Abundant storage areas throughout the home, including the cavernous full basement, offer plenty of space to stow extra belongings.

By removing a wall and combining the original kitchen and formal dining room we were able to create the full-sized, "omni-purpose" island you see here. For a family where everyone has culinary talents, it was just the trick and they can now host gatherings of every kind, from crafting to dinners to birthday parties.

A family cottage in the Gatineau hills infused with Canadiana shifts its way over the edge of a cliff to command views of the adjacent lake. The retreat is gently embedded in the Canadian Shield; the sleeping quarters firmly set in the rock while the cantilevered family room dramatically emerges from this stone base. The modest entry visible from the road leads to an orchestrated, tranquil path entering from the forest-side of the house and moving through the space as it opens up onto the lakeside. The house illustrates a warm approach to modernism; white oak boards wrap from wall to floor enhancing the elongated shape of the house and slabs of silver maple create the bathroom vanity. On the exterior, the main volume is wrapped with open-joint eastern white cedar while the stairwell is encased in steel; both are left unfinished to age with the elements. On the lower level, the dormitory style sleeping quarters are again embedded into the rock. Access to the exterior is provided by a walkout from the lower level recreation room, allowing the family to easily explore nature. Natural cooling is provided by cool air rising from the lake, passing in through the lakeside openings and out through the clerestory windows on the forest elevation. The expanse of windows engages the ephemeral foliage from the treetops to the forest floor. The softness and shadows of the filtered forest light fosters an intimate relationship between the exterior and the interior.

Spectrum Construction & Development, based out of Roxbury Twp., New Jersey is the recipient of the 2016 Awards of Excellence presented by the Metropolitan Builders & Contractors Association of New Jersey in the Custom Single-Family Home Category ($1,000,000 - $2,000,000) The homeowners moved to Morris County, New Jersey to be closer to their grown children and their families. They found a mid-century style home on a beautiful tree-lined street less than a mile away from their children's homes. Although the location was ideal and the corner lot perfectly situated for the homeowners, it was in disrepair and did not offer them the space, design features and finishes they wanted. Spectrum Construction arranged for the original home to be deconstructed with any salvageable material sold to the public for reuse or re-purposing. The custom 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath home that Spectrum Construction designed and built in its place combines country charm with modern elegance. This new home incorporates many unique features including the “drive through” two-car garage that allows the homeowners access to the converging streets. The massive first-floor master bedroom suite consists of a marble surround fireplace, 2 sizeable walk-in-closets as well as his and her luxurious master bathrooms. Two home offices provide the homeowners with ample room to take care of business. An elevator was installed to enable the homeowners and aging guests to easily and safely access the second floor. Abundant storage areas throughout the home, including the cavernous full basement, offer plenty of space to stow extra belongings. The second story was designed with the homeowners’ grandchildren in mind. The additional bedrooms, playroom and upstairs den make room for both daytime visits and overnight stays. Space for entertaining adult guests was also considered. The first floor includes a spacious great room with floor to ceiling stone fireplace which opens to a covered, screened-in back porch with a second stone fireplace. The stylish kitchen, containing two counter seating areas and an eat-in nook, along with the formal dining room give the homeowners plenty of room to accommodate large gatherings.

After. We said GOODBYE to the cavernous brown and black colour scheme. Our client was inspired by the Mad Men television show so we selected furniture to convey a Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. A custom walnut shelving unit was designed to flank the sunken living room.
