It is a great opportunity to create a home in Saint Louis, using design criteria, sensitivities and materials associated with the Northwest. Our clients, a world traveled couple whose second home is in Montana, commissioned us to do just that. Over six tons of stone were brought in from Montana to complement the hand built wooden trusses and rough-hewn lumber sourced locally. Having lived in Europe for many years, the couple is sophisticated with specific objectives. The beautiful millwork in the interior and exterior spaces reflects their taste. The gathering room has a vaulted ceiling but is not cavernous due to the dark elements created by the lumber and color selections. The wagon wheel light fixture is a focal point in the room, along with the Montanan stone floor to ceiling fireplace which mirrors the one outdoors. The millwork frames the room and provides the home with its lovely natural, rustic ambience which plays well with lighting and outdoor living spaces. The front façade is closed to the street, but the back explodes, with a wall of doors that open to the outdoor living and landscaping. Outdoor living space includes fabulous millwork, a beautiful stone fireplace which complements the interior fireplace, seating areas, a dining table and a full kitchen. The outdoor kitchen includes a grill, oven, storage, an icemaker and a refrigerator. The lower level is inviting with its millwork, it’s full bar and a home theatre. Again the timber frames the bar area and the rustic feel is defined by the millwork and the Montana stone. The ceiling is tongue in groove with decorative trusses that include peg details and corbels. Decorative outdoor lanterns add to the ambience. Log storage integrated into the main feature, the fireplace. Attention to detail include unusual millwork and lanterns.

Abundant storage areas throughout the home, including the cavernous full basement, offer plenty of space to stow extra belongings.

There is always an easy way out. A simple, uninteresting solution that neither challenges nor engages the mind or the soul. The 50s rambler is a simple structure that lacks character and charm. Its greatest contribution to architecture was the single floor living concept. We came to this project because the homeowners believed their home had the potential to be something more and had invested their time and creativity into developing ideas for what it could become. We embraced the opportunity to collaborate with the homeowner to create a home that was unique, thoughtful, customized for their use, and cared for. The curved exterior shell of this addition wraps around to accommodate a screen porch under a lifted peak. Inside, the new kitchen follows the curve with custom cabinets and honed granite creating a dynamite space for a chef. Shade tree, bamboo and honed slate flooring weave the living room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen together. Walls jog and jump with color and dimension. One of the major challenges was to ensure that the space could accommodate large family gatherings of 12 – 16 people yet still feel intimate and comfortable for two people when guests were not present. As you move through the home you will notice that none of the spaces feel cavernous or restrictive. Careful attention was paid to mapping out the space to create areas that were cozy and appropriate while taking traffic patterns into consideration. The dining room entrances are staggered which creates the illusion of two separate spaces. The warm red halogen lights further encourage a sense of scale. One can easily extend the dining room table to accommodate a large crowd without causing guests to feel uncomfortable or confined. The use of color is an often noted feature in our projects. Our philosophy is that the selection of color for the walls is as important as the selection of all the other materials. Color influences everything we do and gives us direction for how to feel, where to go, where to stop, and how to interact. It is the binding component between all the elements in a design. It bends, bounces, twists, manipulates light and the eye, and is required to fully develop and design a space. This project was an exciting and rewarding challenge, and we are grateful to the homeowners for asking us to be a part of it and to opening up their home to the public. Our clients sought to transform a functional but uninspired ensuite into a high-end, spa-like retreat. The original room occupied a converted garage space, which presented a unique architectural hurdle: an excessively high ceiling that made the room feel cold and cavernous rather than intimate. The goal was to balance this industrial heritage with the "pampered relaxation" of a luxury hotel. To achieve a cohesive, tranquil atmosphere, we focused on tactile materials and atmospheric volume: Spatial Proportions: We lowered the ceiling to a more intimate height, which not only improved the acoustics but also allowed for the installation of integrated, soft-glow lighting and high-performance extraction. Climate Control: To ensure comfort throughout the year, we installed a high-efficiency underfloor heating (UFH) system. This was essential to mitigate the thermal mass of the large-format porcelain tiles, ensuring the floor remains warm to the touch. Dual-Purpose Luxury: The layout was meticulously planned to accommodate both a deep soaking bath and a spacious walk-in shower, providing the couple with versatile options for both quick refreshment and long, indulgent soaks.

After. We said GOODBYE to the cavernous brown and black colour scheme. Our client was inspired by the Mad Men television show so we selected furniture to convey a Mid-Century Modern aesthetic. A custom walnut shelving unit was designed to flank the sunken living room.

This full kitchen remodel was a major upgrade from the cavernous micro-kitchen originally in the home. By removing a wall and combining the original kitchen and formal dining room we were able to create the full-sized, "omni-purpose" island you see here. For a family where everyone has culinary talents, it was just the trick and they can now host gatherings of every kind, from crafting to dinners to birthday parties.

Spectrum Construction & Development, based out of Roxbury Twp., New Jersey is the recipient of the 2016 Awards of Excellence presented by the Metropolitan Builders & Contractors Association of New Jersey in the Custom Single-Family Home Category ($1,000,000 - $2,000,000) The homeowners moved to Morris County, New Jersey to be closer to their grown children and their families. They found a mid-century style home on a beautiful tree-lined street less than a mile away from their children's homes. Although the location was ideal and the corner lot perfectly situated for the homeowners, it was in disrepair and did not offer them the space, design features and finishes they wanted. Spectrum Construction arranged for the original home to be deconstructed with any salvageable material sold to the public for reuse or re-purposing. The custom 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath home that Spectrum Construction designed and built in its place combines country charm with modern elegance. This new home incorporates many unique features including the “drive through” two-car garage that allows the homeowners access to the converging streets. The massive first-floor master bedroom suite consists of a marble surround fireplace, 2 sizeable walk-in-closets as well as his and her luxurious master bathrooms. Two home offices provide the homeowners with ample room to take care of business. An elevator was installed to enable the homeowners and aging guests to easily and safely access the second floor. Abundant storage areas throughout the home, including the cavernous full basement, offer plenty of space to stow extra belongings. The second story was designed with the homeowners’ grandchildren in mind. The additional bedrooms, playroom and upstairs den make room for both daytime visits and overnight stays. Space for entertaining adult guests was also considered. The first floor includes a spacious great room with floor to ceiling stone fireplace which opens to a covered, screened-in back porch with a second stone fireplace. The stylish kitchen, containing two counter seating areas and an eat-in nook, along with the formal dining room give the homeowners plenty of room to accommodate large gatherings.

Rodwin Architecture & Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, Colorado, USA Interior design, space planning and architectural details converge thoughtfully in this transformative project. A 15-year old, 9,000 sf. home with generic interior finishes and odd layout needed bold, modern, fun and highly functional transformation for a large bustling family. To redefine the soul of this home, texture and light were given primary consideration. Elegant contemporary finishes, a warm color palette and dramatic lighting defined modern style throughout. A cascading chandelier by Stone Lighting in the entry makes a strong entry statement. Walls were removed to allow the kitchen/great/dining room to become a vibrant social center. A minimalist design approach is the perfect backdrop for the diverse art collection. Yet, the home is still highly functional for the entire family. We added windows, fireplaces, water features, and extended the home out to an expansive patio and yard. The cavernous beige basement became an entertaining mecca, with a glowing modern wine-room, full bar, media room, arcade, billiards room and professional gym. Bathrooms were all designed with personality and craftsmanship, featuring unique tiles, floating wood vanities and striking lighting.
