This 1902 San Antonio home was beautiful both inside and out, except for the kitchen, which was dark and dated. The original kitchen layout consisted of a breakfast room and a small kitchen separated by a wall. There was also a very small screened in porch off of the kitchen. The homeowners dreamed of a light and bright new kitchen and that would accommodate a 48" gas range, built in refrigerator, an island and a walk in pantry. At first, it seemed almost impossible, but with a little imagination, we were able to give them every item on their wish list. We took down the wall separating the breakfast and kitchen areas, recessed the new Subzero refrigerator under the stairs, and turned the tiny screened porch into a walk in pantry with a gorgeous blue and white tile floor. The french doors in the breakfast area were replaced with a single transom door to mirror the door to the pantry. The new transoms make quite a statement on either side of the 48" Wolf range set against a marble tile wall. A lovely banquette area was created where the old breakfast table once was and is now graced by a lovely beaded chandelier. Pillows in shades of blue and white and a custom walnut table complete the cozy nook. The soapstone island with a walnut butcher block seating area adds warmth and character to the space. The navy barstools with chrome nailhead trim echo the design of the transoms and repeat the navy and chrome detailing on the custom range hood. A 42" Shaws farmhouse sink completes the kitchen work triangle. Off of the kitchen, the small hallway to the dining room got a facelift, as well. We added a decorative china cabinet and mirrored doors to the homeowner's storage closet to provide light and character to the passageway. After the project was completed, the homeowners told us that "this kitchen was the one that our historic house was always meant to have." There is no greater reward for what we do than that.

Flanking the fireplace are generous built-in white shelving units with linen-backed interiors, beautifully styled with blue-and-white chinoiserie, ceramic vessels, and coastal curiosities. Overhead, a dramatic cathedral ceiling with exposed reclaimed wood trusses in a king-post configuration draws the eye upward and gives the space an almost barn-like grandeur — softened immediately by the warmth of crisp white walls and abundant natural light pouring in through a wall of French doors. The same cloud painting above the bed and the soft blue walls create a dreamy, sky-like atmosphere perfectly suited for a young child.

Walls painted in Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray create a soft, neutral backdrop, allowing the architectural details and layered textures to take center stage. The deep-stained bench tops introduce a rich, grounding element that ties beautifully to the warm wood tones of the table and flooring, creating a cozy, anchored feel. A saturated stained ceiling beam draws the eye upward, adding depth and architectural interest while beautifully framing the nook and reinforcing the home’s rustic character. Above, an oxidized nickel pendant light makes a striking statement. Its antique-inspired finish brings a sense of history and character, perfectly balancing the fresh, tailored lines of the space and reinforcing the modern farmhouse aesthetic. Thoughtfully styled shelving adds personality and charm, while natural light pours in through nearby windows, making this nook the perfect spot to gather, unwind, and start the day.

This secondary bathroom was designed to feel intimate and full of character. A richly patterned floral wallpaper wraps the space, creating depth and a cocooning effect, while a dark custom vanity and stone countertop ground the room. Warm brass plumbing fixtures and globe sconces add contrast and softness against the moody palette. The result is a guest bathroom that feels bold yet timeless — layered, tailored, and designed to make even a smaller space feel special.

A real estate agent turned to interior designer Dane Austin to imbue his new abode with character and beauty. Throughout the home Austin implemented pops of character and texture. "I'm kind of terrified of color but Dane did a really good job using it in a way I felt comfortable with," says the owner, who is happy with the results of Austin's labors.
