This home is perched at the top of a steep hill that descends to a small lake. The slopes were eroding, the outdoor dining areas were too small and the wooden timber walls and steps were beginning to fail. Our simple, richly detailed solution demonstrates Windsor's ability to work with our clients and creatively solve landscape issues. A large wooden deck, a stone terrace, and a sinuous stone wall replaced the old deck and steps. The magnificent swimming pool is now surrounded by warm patterned concrete tiles; the terrace is home to a large overhead wood pergola for shelter from the sun, a stone fireplace for evening entertainment, and a lively cascading waterfall. This project earned Windsor Companies a Merit Award for Excellence in Landscape Design by the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association. Photos by Paul Crosby.

Inspiration for a coastal patio remodel in Seattle

The island is stained walnut. The cabinets are glazed paint. The gray-green hutch has copper mesh over the doors and is designed to appear as a separate free standing piece. Small appliances are behind the cabinets at countertop level next to the range. The hood is copper with an aged finish. The wall of windows keeps the room light and airy, despite the dreary Pacific Northwest winters! The fireplace wall was floor to ceiling brick with a big wood stove. The new fireplace surround is honed marble. The hutch to the left is built into the wall and holds all of their electronics. Project by Portland interior design studio Jenni Leasia Interior Design. We restored original dining room buffet, box beams and windows. Owners removed a lower ceiling to find original box beams above still in place. Buffet with beveled mirror survived, but not the leaded glass. New art glass panels were made by craftsman James McKeown. Sill of flanking windows was the right height for a plate rail, so there may have once been one. We added continuous rail with wainscot below. Since trim was already painted we used smooth sheets of MDF, and applied wood battens. Arch in bay window and enlarged opening into kitchen are new. Benjamin Moore (BM) colors are "Confederate Red" and "Atrium White." Light fixtures are antiques, and furniture reproductions. David Whelan photo
