These clients are empty nesters with grown children and several grandchildren living nearby. They love hosting family gatherings for special occasions and wanted a large space with durable materials and neutral, yet interesting finishes. The large island and perimeter countertop allow space for buffet-style get-togethers, while also feeling perfectly scaled to have breakfast for two from the counter stools. They wanted everything to be of lasting quality, but not feel too precious, so their grandchildren can still have fun running on the porcelain floors and baking on the quartz counters.
The clients desired a cohesive space with the best materials, exhibiting a streamlined appeal that still felt welcoming and catered to all their storage needs. The surfaces are low maintenance for easy clean-up and sanitation. The clients wanted custom, solid-wood cabinetry with natural finishes, for an organic element and visual warmth.
The design intent for this space was to create an open, serene Kitchen utilizing a functional layout, quality materials, and organic elements. The area is grounded by dark terrazzo-looking porcelain and uplifted by contrasting light fixtures. We wanted this room to be inviting through a variety of textures and layered lighting, as it is situated at the heart of the home. With custom cabinetry, the highest caliber appliances and thoughtful hardware, this Kitchen is sure to stand the test of time.
Additionally, clients wanted to hide certain items in the kitchen, such as electronics, appliances, cookbooks, trash, and recycling. Storage for sheet trays, knifes, spices, cutlery and cooking utensils were required. Open display shelves for collectables from travels and an area for a coffee & smoothie bar were also desired.
The island incorporates a hidden charging station for electronics, open shelving for cookbooks, while housing an instant hot and chilled water dispenser at the sink. The cabinetry also has a hidden trash and recycling center, specialty spice and cooking utensil pull-outs, drawers with custom inserts for knifes, cutting boards, cutlery, and tableware. An appliance garage allows room for the stand mixer and toaster to be out of sight, but within reach. A lighted coffee and smoothie bar were planned for the clients’ love of coffee and healthy nutrition. The island and floating shelves are made of oak panels with inlaid brass, adding a subtle touch of sparkle and warmth that highlights gold flecks in the island countertop.

This remodel took an old kitchen with pale oak cabinets, a pink laminate counter, and aged vinyl flooring and modernized it with classic glazed cherry cabinetry, stainless appliances, and quartz countertops. By moving the refrigerator to the center, we separated prep and clean-up zones for a more organized functionality. Removing old-fashioned soffits allowed San Luis Kitchen to extend the cabinets all the way to the ceiling -- adding both storage space and room for a decorative shelf above the sink.

A new vanity provides ample storage with dual sinks. With children in mind, we installed single lever chrome faucets for easy temperature and volume control. Undermount sinks and a durable quartz vanity top address the need for easy cleanup and kid-proof confidence. Abundant natural light, new paint, and a large mirror highlight this crisp and classic bathroom.

Here’s what some people may refer to as the “fun part” of a redesign—picking out all the pretty stuff. First, choose your appliances. Many higher-end brands such as Sub-Zero and Wolf currently have a lead time of six to 12 months due to COVID. The cabinets, which have a shorter lead time of eight to 12 weeks on average, says Frederick, will then be built around them. From there, you’ll work with your designer to solidify all the details, such as cabinet door style, countertop material, decorative hardware, fixtures, flooring, backsplash and the sink.
“This is the stage where you finalize the design and prepare final floor plans, elevations, details and, if applicable, mechanical and electrical drawings, lighting switch plans and exterior elevations,” says Terrill. It’s essentially an extension of step No. 4, except here you’re confirming all the details and making sure everything is going as scheduled. For example, at this point your builder will give the interior designers a schedule so the designer can make sure everything (such as the countertop marble) is on-site and ready for installation.
Assuming you’re changing the footprint of the kitchen, you’ll need to figure out specific details as they pertain to the construction, our designers note, such as:
How will the construction team remove debris? With a dumpster or will they keep it in your garage or yard?
Will there be a staging area for cutting wood and tile?
When will you need to be out of the house, and for how long?
Where can crew members use the bathroom?
Can/should the crew work on weekends and if so, during what hours?
Keep in mind too that certain requests might require more money, such as having the crew clean-up their dusty mess daily rather than, say, once a week.

Mudrooms are practical entryway spaces that serve as a buffer between the outdoors and the main living areas of a home. Typically located near the front or back door, mudrooms are designed to keep the mess of the outside world at bay.
These spaces often feature built-in storage for coats, shoes, and accessories, helping to maintain a tidy and organized home. Durable flooring materials, such as tile or easy-to-clean surfaces, are common in mudrooms to withstand dirt and moisture.
Additionally, mudrooms may include benches or cubbies for convenient seating and storage of bags or backpacks. With hooks for hanging outerwear and perhaps a small sink for quick cleanups, mudrooms efficiently balance functionality with the demands of an active household, providing an essential transitional space in the home.

This remodel was a dated 1980s Cape Cod style home that desperately needed updating with the kitchen starting as the foundation for the rest of the home. The owners purchased the property in 2013 with the intent of replacing the existing kitchen installed in 2000, as well as updating most surfaces throughout the home. The space while moderately sized, felt cramped due to the L-shaped design and eat-in island that disrupted traffic flow from the mudroom, dining room and sliding doors to the patio. The owners knew they wanted to bring the light from the southern facing front of the home to the dark cave-like feeling of the kitchen. This was remedied by knocking down the wall between the existing dining room (now a lounge area), widening the entrance to the family room and creating a pathway to the existing formal living room (now the dining room). Also to create better traffic flow into the kitchen, the existing mudroom door was moved to the opposite side of the wall.
A large work island with cooktop, oven and convection/microwave was designed for efficiency and maintaining clean site lines. The work triangle allows for quick and easy meal prep and clean-up for the busy family. Space at the end of the kitchen was perfectly suited for a large kitchen table with views of the back yard, easy conversation with the cook at the island or those hanging in the newly appointed lounge area. The new doorway between the kitchen and dining room showcases the 10ft floor to ceiling bay window, allows more light to flood into the space and creates easy access between the two rooms for family gatherings. Given the home owners relocated to the area for job reasons and are not sure how long they will be in this home, we helped them achieve a balance of a design and finishes that they not only love, but would be appealing to many if another move was in their near future.

"From the very beginning, it was obvious that Kerry Taylor is a creative, calm, solution oriented person who deals with challenges extremely well. His professionalism, knowledge, and work ethic are exemplary and his crew mirrors every one of those qualities. From structural problems that required immediate resolution to working around other contractors (flooring, windows), to everyday cleanup and protection of our surroundings, they did it all. Kerry designed and built special structures to support the cabinet crown moldings that we had purchased and which turned out not to be as we expected. We hadn't decided on everything ahead of time and the necessary resulting change orders were very decently priced and well documented in his invoices and receipts. He came in absolutely on budget and on time because he knows how to efficiently manage a project so that the workflow is smooth. We will absolutely call on him for future projects."

Perched on Great Neck in Ipswich, MA, this coastal renovation was all about unlocking the home’s stunning ocean views.
The original layout left the ground level disconnected from its breathtaking surroundings, so we flipped the bedrooms to the front by converting an underused porch.
This allowed us to introduce an elegant new bath and laundry area, offering effortless access for post-boating cleanups.
A striking custom spiral staircase was added for seamless flow while preserving the integrity of the upper level, which will be tackled in Phase 2. Beyond aesthetics, we remediated a major mold issue, ensuring a safe and healthy retreat. Thoughtful material selections—teak, Moderne Brass, Calacatta Glitz, and rich red oak—bring warmth and modern refinement to this refreshed waterfront escape.

Fall color is aburst around us. Breath in the crisp morning air and get your fill of the vibrant fall colors and breathtaking sunsets.
