Stone steps with flagstone treads descend gracefully between levels, and large natural boulders are thoughtfully placed throughout the landscaping — giving the entire environment the feeling of a discovered natural water feature rather than a constructed pool. A modern home with an eclectic mix My clients in this space were divided. They were split by competing aesthetics. There were Vietnamese art pieces with modern motifs and bold colours mixed with hand-crafted rustic tables and antique Canadiana. I quickly identified a lack of cohesion and an uncomfortable conversation area as the primary issues that were causing my clients stress. A change was in order. We partitioned their large connected dining room, living and entryway areas using the existing furniture and floor covering. We were able to create several distinct and cohesive areas that each brought out the best of their contents. Each grouping now seemed natural and harmonious. Smooth international contemporary style and rustic heritage pieces now coexisted in the same space without causing my clients decorating headaches. To organize future projects and to summarize personalized decorating tips, Redecorating Vancouver provided them with a written Design Plan at the conclusion of the consultation. Family is important to me. I recognize that items in my clients' homes have unseen significance. In this instance, I was able to gather items to create a grand-parents nook to honour the couple's family. We took advantage of an heirloom antique radio that belonged to the client's grandfather and a meaningful handmade table. It is both pleasing to the eye and a daily reminder to the couple of who really matters in a home: the family that lives in it.

Project Overview: Our team embarked on a thoughtful renovation journey, transforming an aging deck into a harmonious blend of indoor-outdoor living. The goal was to create a space that honors tradition while embracing modern comfort. Existing Deck Transformation: Original Deck: The existing deck, weathered by years of memories, retained its original purpose—a place where sunlight dances and conversations flow. Uncovered and open to the elements, it stood as a testament to countless gatherings and sun-kissed afternoons. Screen Porch Conversion: Half of the deck underwent a magical metamorphosis, emerging as a screen porch—a sanctuary where the outdoors and indoors intertwine. The screen porch now cradles moments of quiet contemplation, protected from bugs and gentle rain. Design Considerations: Seamless Transition: The transition between the deck and the screen porch is seamless, honoring the house’s original footprint. The shared boundary invites a gentle flow—a dance of light and shadow. Cantilevered Roof: To preserve the deck’s sunlit expanse, we cantilevered the roof over the screen porch. This architectural choice ensures that both spaces coexist harmoniously, each with its unique purpose. Functional Harmony: The deck, now partially covered, continues to serve as an alfresco haven for sunbathing, stargazing, and laughter. The screen porch beckons with its screened walls, inviting cozy evenings and whispered secrets. Legacy and Connection: This renovation isn’t just about wood and nails; it’s about honoring the past and embracing the future. The parents, their children, and grandchildren—all find solace here, under the same sky, within these transformed walls.

The workhorse is undoubtedly his island, a dialogue of styles between classic and contemporary, a combination of materials in which honey-colored wood meets Nero Marquinia stone in a brushed finish and marble. The visual contrast alone, but also the Italian excellence of the material quality, make it a true work of art.

When our long-time clients, decidedly urban dwellers, de-camped from the city to the suburbs in 2019, we helped them remake their “too-traditional” new house into a home that better fit their style. A recently-completed house by a developer, we set-out from day one to sprinkle their preferred contemporary, more-urban-than-suburban style throughout the spaces. All without major architectural changes. We changed all the decorative lighting and doors throughout the home to allow the architecture to better align with their style. The home is now layered with clean-lines, modern fabrics, vibrant colors, and contemporary art. The result is the perfect coexistence of contemporary and traditional – without letting either feel out of place.

Working in Harmony with Nature One of the most remarkable aspects of this project is how the pergola and the clam shell-colored Trex deck were thoughtfully designed to complement and highlight the existing large red oak tree. Rather than overshadowing or competing with its natural beauty, the design gracefully worked around the tree, creating a harmonious coexistence between human craftsmanship and nature’s elegance.

This adorable kitchen in Point Loma, CA is now open to the family room, small in spaces but united with a nature-inspired color palette. The kitchen went through an extensive remodel removing walls, raised ceiling, exposing the beam and a new glass door for the back entry and now this small kitchen feel open and spacious. The cabinetry features shaker elements―clean lines, plain trim, and little ornamentation― great for transitional decor. Functional fixtures and modern appliances peacefully coexist with the mosaic marble backsplash. Hidden behind the door panels is a 30” Subzero refrigerator/freezer integrated nicely to keep the kitchen plan, clean and understated. The corner sink is recessed back adding a nice detail but even more importantly a more accessible corner access to the kitchen windows. Accessories and details added to the kitchen cabinets give this chef everything she was looking for with a spice pullout, knife block pullout and rollouts to top off the new cabinets. When space is tight it is a great option for a small family to open up the walls and add a counter where the family can dine. On the walls, neutral gray painted create a soothing atmosphere. Adjacent to the kitchen was a cramped room that functioned as a workout room and laundry room. By changing some wall space, closing in a door and removing a closet the new space has great storage and is more open and functional for a quick workout. In the family room the fireplace was re-tiled with a concrete looking porcelain tile topped off with a rustic beam mantle. Combined with new home furnishings to make the most of a small space this new family room is both functional and a great place for the couple to spend time with each other on a daily basis and to entertain guest and a new space has been created with the feel of a comfortable cozy space for all to enjoy. The master plan was to create a family campus featuring a main house for gathering, three "sibling" cottages, a boathouse, and a dock. The composition for each of these structures is to live, as a family, independently and also in relation to each other.
