After moving into a mid-century ranch home on Spokane's South Hill, these homeowners gave the tired landscape a dramatic makeover. The aging asphalt driveway was replaced by precast concrete pavers that coordinate with a new walkway of sandwashed concrete pads. A pared-down front lawn reduces the overall water use of the landscape, while sculptural boulders add character. A small flagstone patio creates a spot to enjoy the outdoors in the courtyard-like area between the house and the towering ponderosa pines. The backyard received a similar update, with a new garden area, water feature, and paver patio anchoring the updated space.

If you're looking for a distinctive commercial exterior cladding option, Triangle Brick Company's Biscayne Bay is the perfect choice. Blue-gray and subtle warm accents in this pearl-colored brick deliver a look that's just the right combination of vintage and modern. This architectural brick is one of only two bricks in the Downtown collection offered under our Select product tier.

Exterior forms are emphasized with glass and fiber-cement panels at the top level, soaring over and sheltering containers clad in tougher, leathery Corten Steel at the ground level. Exposed concrete walls and rock-filled gabion retaining was selected to anchor the partially day-lighted basement level and garages to the land. Materials were chosen to be low-maintenance, relatively inexpensive, and to contrast the volumes that express the interior spaces.

This master bathroom is an oasis of clean, bright design with an abundance of natural light. Our Miami clients wanted a contemporary space, and we gave them hyper modernism with custom materials imported from Italy. A glass walk-in shower with sleek fixtures is a subtle touch to balance the dramatic artwork. Our favorite feature in this master bath is the hand-made mosaic micro tile wall.

• Front Exterior, Del Mar House
Airstream trailers and Quonset huts inspired the design for this house docked against a gentle slope near San Diego. Cheng Design pits hard-edged industrial materials — concrete block, galvanized siding, steel columns, stainless steel cable and welded I-beams — against softer residential elements, such as stained-wood siding and a grid of exposed wood framing that supports the roof.

Tucked into a corner of the dining room, this butler’s pantry is small but has a lot of style, with its metal grout joints and oversize antiqued tile. We repeated the brass plumbing fixture – it’s from the same collection as the kitchen faucet. The clean, sleek lines are perfect for this small space.
