Courtesy of Atelier Peter Zumthor & Partner: “Zinc mining in the Almanna Canyon in Sauda, Norway, commenced in 1882 under extremely basic conditions.... The mine was closed in 1899....At about the spot where the ore used to be washed and a miners’ barracks once stood on a rocky outcrop, there is now a rest stop on National Highway 520.... Our project was commissioned by the Statens vegvesen, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, to commemorate the almost forgotten history of the zinc mine ... On taking a closer look, one can indeed discover traces of the canyon’s mining history: the transport trail beginning at the mine entrance and cut into the slope with supporting walls and bridges, the foundations of the wooden platform from which the ore was thrown down, and the remains of foundations for simple wooden structures that have since disappeared. Our design works with these elements. It proposes a family of four structures, light wooden constructions along the old mine pathway. The modest open-air museum begins at the redesigned rest stop. Here we find the first member of the little family, a service building. Opposite the rest stop we have built a new flight of stone stairs which leads up to the former trail from the pit. A few more steps up the trail we come to the mining café.... After a further turn in the canyon pathway we come upon a shelter, a collection point where those who want to take a guided tour through the mine are given a helmet with a headlamp. Right next to this, visitors climb up to the mining museum, the fourth and last member of the family of buildings, ...”

See what our client say about Paul Lopa Designs: We recently remodeled a studio we purchased for guests who visit us. The project included the demolition of a kitchenettem and a bathroom, and the installation of new cabinets, wood flooring, granite countertops, appliances, wood molding and a custom Murphy bed in the sleeping area. My husband and I wanted a contractor who specializes in high end kitchens. We hired Paul Lopa (who had previously done two projects for us—a kitchen remodel and a bathroom remodel) as we were extremely impressed with his work, from beginning to end. For the studio project, Paul brought many samples to our home before the project commenced. It was very easy for us to select the materials, from the wood used for the cabinets and Murphy bed to the granite countertop and wood floor. We were also very pleased with the appliances he helped us select as well, as the kitchen was transformed into a full-fledged kitchen with an eat-at counter. Paul helped us select custom marble for the bathroom which is gorgeous! Every suggestion he made was great. The studio is now worthy of being photographed by Architectural Digest! Paul and his crew are very professional. His staff is friendly and were always on time. Upon completion of the job, the whole area was clean and ready to use. Paul was always accessible and available to answer questions whenever we had one. We were impressed that the project finished on time and on budget! We will definitely use Paul for all future work. He is a consummate professional and very nice to work with.

This extensive interior design project commenced shortly after the clients moved into their newly purchased home. Initially, we provided paint color recommendations to refresh most of the home, buying time until more specific remodels could be tackled. The first phase focused on the Master Suite. We transformed a hall bath into a modern master bathroom featuring raised "his and hers" vanities and a spacious walk-in shower with custom finishes. The master bedroom received a fresh coat of paint and custom window treatments, specifically designed to coordinate with the new bedding. The second phase involved remodeling the basement to create a multifunctional family area that includes a bar and game space, an updated bathroom, and a dedicated hobby/craft room. This new layout provided a versatile space for leisure and creativity. The third and final phase was the most in-depth, involving structural changes to the home’s layout. We removed two walls that separated the kitchen and dining room from the foyer. This alteration not only opened up the space but also allowed for the expansion of the kitchen. New hardwood flooring was laid, and kitchen cabinetry, hardware, countertops, backsplash, and lighting fixtures were all meticulously selected and installed. A cohesive color palette was carried from the kitchen through the dining room, living room, hallway, and into the Jack and Jill bedrooms and bathroom. We also updated the stairway with new handrails, balusters, and stair treads. To complete the transformation, new furniture was ordered and installed throughout these areas. Each phase of this project was executed with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to creating a space that not only meets the clients' needs but also reflects their personal style, making their house truly feel like a home.

Standing atop a hill overlooking the park entry, focused on the panorama of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains beyond, the Sunset Pavilion marks the intersection of multiple paths along a regional trail system. In concert with 8 additional pavilions throughout the park, the Sunset structure speaks to the simplicity of construction and the honesty of natural materials. The dramatic steel structure cantilevers from grade, sheltering visitors from the harsh Colorado sun. Acting as a lens, the pavilion’s details are designed to emphasize the phenomenal qualities of the sun’s path throughout the day. A carefully diagrammed set of perforations along the overhead plane tracks the sun’s movement during the autumnal and vernal equinox. Simultaneous construction, on and off site, allowed the Sunset Pavilion to be completed in just over 4 months. Rough and final grading, as well as landscape and site work on the gabion wall, were commencing in conjunction with off-site steel and concrete fabrication. Upon completion of the pavilion’s foundation and gabion walls, the steel structure was delivered and craned into place in little more than an hours time. Local craftsmen were able to complete their tasks in a controlled environment allowing their work to be expressed in its true beauty. Speed and controlled construction were paramount to the completion of the Pavilion with little site disturbance for this new community amenity. The fluid shape of the concrete bench beneath the pavilion roof invites visitors to sit, climb, recline and view the landscape. The curves, referencing the topography of the mountains, evolved from an algorithmic abstraction from the core of the pavilion, and the point at which the geographic monuments in the distance are plotted. The sheer weight and materiality of the bench contrasts with the seemingly delicate and temporal structure overhead. Both combine to offer a functional opportunity for rest and shade while making present the natural phenomenon that speak to the power of the Rocky Mountains.
