Inspiration for a large timeless white brick house exterior remodel in Chicago with a hip roof

One of our favorite projects this year was the remodel of a family home in the upscale neighborhood of University Park, a suburb of Dallas. The clients are well on their way to amassing an impressive art and photo collection, and were looking for a redesign of all the baths, paint and lighting updates throughout the home, and selections of specific furniture pieces in the common areas that would integrate with their existing furniture and art collection.

Passing through the entry gates reveals the formal Entry Courtyard, with main and guest casita porches, flagstone and Chicago common brick hardscaping, and antique French limestone fountain basin. The main mass of the home is clad with integrally colored three-coat plaster, while the 1,000 square foot wine cellar, and guest casita are clad in McDowell Mountain stone with mortar wash finish. SeaThru is a new, waterfront, modern home. SeaThru was inspired by the mid-century modern homes from our area, known as the Sarasota School of Architecture. This homes designed to offer more than the standard, ubiquitous rear-yard waterfront outdoor space. A central courtyard offer the residents a respite from the heat that accompanies west sun, and creates a gorgeous intermediate view fro guest staying in the semi-attached guest suite, who can actually SEE THROUGH the main living space and enjoy the bay views. Noble materials such as stone cladding, oak floors, composite wood louver screens and generous amounts of glass lend to a relaxed, warm-contemporary feeling not typically common to these types of homes. The home's kitchen mixes modern amenities with natural, old world charm to make the space welcoming, rich and tasteful. The browns and oranges of the brick backsplash are complemented by the natural hues of the wooden island. The white cabinets and bright lights offer a nice contrast.

This project required the renovation of the Master Bedroom area of a Westchester County country house. Previously other areas of the house had been renovated by our client but she had saved the best for last. We reimagined and delineated five separate areas for the Master Suite from what before had been a more open floor plan: an Entry Hall; Master Closet; Master Bath; Study and Master Bedroom. We clarified the flow between these rooms and unified them with the rest of the house by using common details such as rift white oak floors; blackened Emtek hardware; and french doors to let light bleed through all of the spaces. We selected a vein cut travertine for the Master Bathroom floor that looked a lot like the rift white oak flooring elsewhere in the space so this carried the motif of the floor material into the Master Bathroom as well. Our client took the lead on selection of all the furniture, bath fixtures and lighting so we owe her no small praise for not only carrying the design through to the smallest details but coordinating the work of the contractors as well.
