Advice on interior design is available everywhere—from TV shows and websites to books, magazines and apps.
We love seeing people become engaged in design and educated on the wide range of possibilities. But we hope you’ll proceed with caution.
It’s not that style errors are a matter of life and death. It’s just that it’s easy to choose designs that aren’t necessarily reflective of your own personality and character. And since you’re typically stuck with your interior design decisions for years, styles that don’t quite fit can tend to grate on you.
Interiors that give one person comfort may unleash chaos in someone else. This goes beyond favorite colors or hot trends, right to the heart of interior design, where you find questions of composition, balance, repetition, space and more.
The goal is to find that unique combination of design elements that gives you comfort, support and balance.
In one home, that perfect balance was struck through the use of symmetry. A pair of comfortable swivel chairs sit beneath matching indigo patterned paintings. Matching bookcases below the paintings contain similar, but not identical, arrangements of books, vases and bowls. Woods and bronzes help warm up the simple white bookcase shelving.
Two matching poufs in front of the fireplace provide additional seating. The sofa is accented with a pair of pillows with a blue pattern that echoes the artwork.
The effect of the symmetry is to achieve order and simplicity, which I promote at every opportunity. After all, your home interiors should be the setting or the backdrop of your life—not center stage.
Antique bronze and blue are complementary colors. Together, they offer a rich palette of richness and depth, which brings out the beauty of wood and stone.
In the home office, a unique, whitewash-stained wooden desk rests on metal, Sawhorse-inspired legs for a warm, rustic look. The black leather chair features a contemporary silhouette with an antique brass frame. An adjustable desk lamp has bronze accents.
The bookcase combines a sleek, black metal frame with concrete shelves, for another unusual pairing. It’s kept uncluttered for an orderly, peaceful look. Items on the shelves include a bronze-accented lamp and a pair
of high gloss-finished wooden bookends.
The elegant artwork behind the desk is a simple midnight-blue and bronze with mottled white. Deep blues are again picked up in the rug, which adds a stately vibe with a modern pattern and satisfying texture.
Within the framework of symmetry, the living room repeats the blue-and-bronze color scheme.
A large midcentury brass clock above the fireplace keeps the natural stone visible, rather than hidden behind a painting or television, while its straight lines and color create a beautiful contrast.
The sofa is a soft, neutral blue. The pattern on the round brass side table features echoes the darker blue-patterned rug, as well as the rug in the office, tying the rooms together.
Indigo blue books adjacent to bronze vases on the shelves repeat the color scheme. The soapstone-topped coffee table echoes the shape of the fireplace. A pair of tall, matching floor lamps with long wooden bases, brass pulls and simple linen shades combine both the colors and symmetry found throughout the home.

This wonderful stone pool patio is part of a lakeside oasis in Bethel, NY where beauty and relaxation await.
With the goal of further accentuating the breathtaking lakeside views on this Bethel, NY property, designers at Landworx seamlessly blended a complementary outdoor oasis with the property's stunning features. The poolscape is encircled by a natural boulder retaining wall, separating the structure of the lawn and welcoming guests to travel into the connecting paths of the property. Additionally, the Landworx team chose an ideal spot for a stone fire pit, welcoming its visitors to gaze out over the expansive lake that surrounds the neighborhood.

Delicious | A feast of creative spatial ideas. Ornate mouldings draw the eye up toward ceiling beams, banquettes combine sitting and storage places, while furniture legs and architectural detail create lively interest. Hollibrune and Loring styles use complementary flat and raised panels, with contrasting Portobello and Smokey Hills finishes that define work and dining areas. A mix of custom and semi-custom that accentuates the villa feel of this kitchen.

Walking into the soothing palette of this primary bath is a pleasure. Angling the freestanding tub softened the lines of the space, added interest and on a practical level, makes cleaning a breeze. The softly veined tile floor is also at the same angle as the tub and extends the lines. Flanking his and her vanities were updated in beautiful grey with marble tops.
The shower design continues the complementary theme. The glossy white tile provides a light, clean feeling. The angled frameless shower door is low iron to ensure full clarity. The shower seat, corner shelves, and a hand-held shower head are lovely amenities.

This modern Scandinavian kitchen features frameless slab cabinetry that centers the focus on warm-toned wood and complementary white cabinets. Ample storage and countertop space, a coffee nook, and open shelving really bring this kitchen to life.

Pale-greay wood-grain resin cabinets were installed above and below the new mottled-gray resin countertop that runs along three sides of the kitchen. The island-expanded slightly and given new white lacquer cabinets and a black granite work surface - now stands as a contrasting, yet complementary, element in the center of the room. Long, slotted brushed-steel pulls aligned horizontally on drawers and vertically on cabinets - are a unifying element, and a new hardwood floor warms they way only wood can. The stainless-steel refrigerator and dual oven are now flush with the cabinets. Reed also added touch- recessed LED lights that turn on automatically when a cabinet door is opened, illuminating the interior, plus touch-activated LEDs on the bottom of the cabinets to light the countertop

This extensive remodel overlooking Lake Austin is a paean to the powerful art it enfolds. Rigorous editing of every distracting, inconsequential element of the original house was critical. So too was the insertion of new complementary components that provide artful ways to move through both interior and exterior rooms.
The collection of modern art is arresting. Ranging from a Turrell hologram to a pair of Agnes Martins, the art is framed by the architecture and lighting so that it is experienced in a choregraphed, curated way that encourages wandering and an intimate connection to each piece.
The mood is set in the entry courtyard. A floating walkway curves down and around a brilliant spiraling blue Clement sculpture. It pauses once, at a moment of surprise, when the first view through the house is filled with the blue water of the lake beyond. Inside the saturated color of many of the pieces of art are balanced by an absence of other visual clutter in the color palette, furniture and architecture. A new interior plaster, steel and bronze stair carves through a space occupied by two small Clement sculptures in niches, a Page Kempner sculpture on a landing and a glass cylinder elevator.
This is a very specific place, designed for specific art and for a collector who has a close relationship with each piece.

For the light-bathed room off the hard-working kitchen, Sara began with spellbinding color as inspiration. On the walls she used an earthy, hot-flashing orange, a hue of fruits and flowers, and covered the banquette in brilliant turquoise, a cool pool of complementary color. Playful, freewheeling, and unconventional, the space offers both safe harbor and escape.

The home had a paver patio with a pergola. They wanted something simple with clean finishes as well as
a Jacuzzi. We removed the old pavers and put down 16 X 24 travertine classic ivory tiles. Tying into the
roof and incorporating the breezeway, we added a 900 SF patio cover. The center section has a vaulted
ceiling and a gable roof. We dropped the Jacuzzi into the ground 2 feet and added composite decking around it.
The ceiling finish is hardie that has been painted to match the home with columns and beams that are
also wrapped in hardie and painted with a complementary trim color.
We installed gas lanterns and indirect lighting on the seat wall.
