Nature is omnipresent and ingrained in every fiber of the home, not just through the thoughtful integration of interior and exterior spaces and placement of openings that highlight the surrounding views, but in the selection of materials that the interior is composed of—blond oaks with minimal protective finish preserving the inherent essence of wood, bespoke hand-finished metals that patina over time and exude that wabi-sabi quality of imperfect perfection, plasters that have been hand molded into sculptural shapes of colossal proportions (main fireplace), natural stones whose leathered surface only becomes more burnished and warmer to the touch, organic fibers and hand-woven rugs.

Located in the heart of Montreal, Binôme is an architectural urban densification project built by Modulor. Composed of two distinct buildings connected by an inner courtyard, this new five-unit development stands out through its unique layout, architecture, and exceptional attention to detail. The construction required rigorous planning and precise technical execution, particularly due to major excavation work and underpinning of adjacent buildings. Such interventions in a dense urban environment demand specialized expertise and tight project management at every phase of the build.
Conceived as an income-generating property, the clients benefited from our strategic support to ensure the profitability, efficiency, and optimization of their investment. Modulor worked closely with the team at Appareil Architecture to bring to life a project of high architectural integrity.
Binôme’s architecture draws inspiration from the area's industrial past: clean volumes, red brick, generous openings reminiscent of former workshops, and elegant brick colonnades form a refined and cohesive ensemble. The central courtyard, designed as a luminous and welcoming shared space, becomes the vibrant heart of the project. A colorful metal staircase, crafted by Atomic Soudure, connects both buildings and adds a distinctive, curated touch.
As a finalist for the 2025 Ordre des architectes du Québec Awards of Excellence, Binôme stands as a model of successful urban revitalization. It illustrates how thoughtful, well-executed construction can elevate Montreal’s built environment while addressing today’s densification challenges.

This beautiful traditional hill country-style home highlighted with contemporary elements on a family plot bringing two generations closer together.
Approaching the home, you notice the traditional Texas hill country aesthetics of limestone paired with a metal roof, but these features change as you proceed to the back exterior elevation. The back of the home is composed mostly of glass and steel, to create a luminous harmonization with the outdoors and showcase an open staircase. Integrating these contemporary design elements required much attention to detail from the Burnette team.

This home was thoroughly reimagined – architecturally, throughout the interiors, site, and gardens. The vintage bones of the home were enhanced by the design team while every aspect of contemporary living was accommodated – including a yard for two beloved family dogs. The collaboration between client, architect, interior designer, landscape architect and construction team is celebrated in the result. A composed garden space was formed around a spectacular Cork Oak. This tree was brought in to mediate the view of the neighboring Temple Emanu-El. Additional mature plantings, citrus trees, flowers, and a softly burbling fountain contribute to the comfort of the flowing space. The drive court melds into the garden space with stairway access to an expansive terrace above. From this terrace, views of the garden, fountain, greenery, and Temple are enjoyed – with soft lighting extending enjoyment into the evening.

This 10,000 square foot home on Brassie Lane in north La Verne was in need of new master bedroom furnishings per request of the new owner of the home. Brassie Lane is located in the La Verne Oaks gated community. This neighborhood is a separate gated community within the Live Oak gated community. It’s composed of 2 streets lined with 20 custom homes ranging between 5,000-15,000 square feet. While the owner was out of the country, I was hired to source and install all furnishings for the master. Her only request was that the furnishings were high end to match the quality of her mansion. I was happy to decorate her master with luxury linens and decor that would welcome her to her new home and make her feel as comfortable as possible when she first moved in. Here are some images of the space after.

The bath has full-height subway tile on the walls and mosaic tile on the floor that flows into a walk-in shower. The vanity is fabricated of steel sections and has a concrete top. New cabinets provide storage space for linens and supplies as well as a broom closet for the main floor. The new electrical system for the residence is composed of artfully laid out exposed metal conduit and boxes as seen on the left.

The IL-1 Beta table was a unique and personalized birthday gift for renowned scientist Charles DInarello. We were commissioned to build a custom gift to represent three defining elements of his life; the refining of IL-1 Beta, one of his first monumental scientific achievements; his love of gardening and outdoor living spaces; and his enthusiasm for entertaining guests and fitting as many people around his table as possible (both figuratively and literally). We combined these three defining elements, and designed an outdoor table, a courtyard centerpiece, that would represent IL-1 Beta and enhance the scientist’s garden parties.
One of the most important and challenging design aspects of the IL-1Beta table were the pedestal legs. The recipient of this beautiful gift, Dr. Dinarello, loves entertaining guests, introducing strangers, and encouraging conversation, so we designed a table that could sit many and then add more. The pedestals are each composed of seven pieces of wood that had to be assembled in a precise order for strength, stability and beauty. The table stands delicately with just the tips of the pedestal legs touching the ground, like a couple mid-waltz, poised and strong and light on the dance floor.

This Southwestern modern residence draws inspiration from the timeless architecture of Santa Fe, New Mexico, reinterpreted through a clean, contemporary lens. Crisp lines, smooth stucco walls, and sculptural parapet roofs establish a quiet, grounded presence while respecting the regional vocabulary of adobe forms. The home is carefully composed as a series of connected volumes, creating a sense of rhythm and shadow across the façade.
Designed for a long corner lot, the layout emphasizes indoor–outdoor living through shaded breezeways, courtyards, and framed views of the landscape. Green roofs and a roof garden soften the architecture while enhancing sustainability, providing usable outdoor space and visual relief from above. An olive garden anchors the site with texture and seasonal change, reinforcing the connection between architecture and desert landscape.
A detached garage maintains the purity of the main residence while helping define outdoor rooms and circulation paths across the site. Together, the massing, materials, and landscape work in harmony to create a modern Southwestern home that feels both rooted in place and distinctly contemporary.

This is a proposal for a 36'x128' corner lot in South Minneapolis. The main considerations were sun exposure, privacy and as big as possible private yard.
After setbacks the workable area is 23'x95'. The house is composed of two boxes connected by a bridge. This bridge allows to keep more area on the ground level creating a covered deck for the courtyard as well as being the studio/home office area.
The features of this 3bd/3.5 br. and 2 car garage home (2400s.f above grade) are double height living room, open layout, integrated dining/kitchen and studio.

The renovation of an extensive linear residence and site facing Port Orchard waterway embraces water, greenspace and forested hillside. The home, completed this fall, serves as an artist’s studio, galleries, family space, game room, outdoor living areas and peaceful retreat.
New interiors and exterior spaces and finishes, cabinetry, lighting, paving, landscape and courtyards become settings for the owner’s art + collections, three-generations of family and the wonderful colors and textures of the land + water.
Inside, a monumental central stair and tapered two-story tall red cedar and steel column was designed as the residence’s entry focal point and internal landmarks, guiding the visitor’s eye to the main atrium…. and upward. Heavy wide-flange steel moment frames support the house and enable whole walls of glass. Rough, mill-finished steel contrasts refined cabinetry, stone, wood structure and defining dropped ceilings, reflecting the opener’s love of the tension between highly polished and detailed + rough, found art.
Outside, A new southern “dining room” was designed for warm summer evening gatherings under a heavy-timber trellis. The focus, opposite water and island views, is a metal perforated screen. The final screen is composed of the lyrics from a Joe Cocker song of great meaning to the owners, cut from ½” marine bronze, set into dark-fired brick. “Oh My Darling, Be Home Soon….”
Natural daylight and high-efficiency lighting are central players as in any gallery. From a high clerestory and extensive southern and eastern window-walls to carefully selected up-lighting, pendants, and accent fixtures, Rhodes Architecture + Light worked closely with the owner to ensure that their dark existing house would become one filled with light…. night and day.
The owners, Ken and Jane, allowed us to interview them about their experience working with Rhodes Architecture + Light, and how they are feeling about living with the architecture today.
What was your experience like, working with Rhodes Architecture + Light?
“They worked with us because it was a remodel, an existing thing, and we had to try to make it work for all of our interests and how our family operated. They listened, and we listened, and it was a great communication back and forth.”–Jane
How has the renovation changed the way you live and enjoy your home?
“I remember saying to them that I want the whole floor heated because it gets so chilly down here. And we had the wood burning stove, but it was over there and now we just turn the floor heat on and we can come down. It’s cozy and nice. So we’re looking forward to winter now.”–Ken
“We have 5 kids together and now a bunch of grandchildren. I wanted a marble countertop, but there’s just no way. I didn’t want it to be a place where I had to say, ‘No, no, no. Wipe up your drink, do this, do that.’ I wanted it to be a place where everybody can come with all the kids, and we make a big mess, and I can clean it up. And we can enjoy ourselves here, because that room upstairs, we almost never went in. And now we’re in there eating pizza and watching the game.” –Jane
As an artist, Jane enjoyed the collaborative process.
“I can’t believe it was as positive as it was. I went into it thinking it would be a great, creative, fun, collaborative thing, and I have to say, with our architects, it was. I like that creative process. I always say when I am doing a painting, it’s a series of problem solving so it wasn’t unusual for me. I am completely blown away by them and had fun with that part of it.” –Jane

Serving as a winter retreat for a family of world travelers, a thoughtfully composed program of calm, comforting spaces imbuing casual elegance is presented effortlessly in the landscape. Oriented around a central grand oak and its adjacent loblolly pine, the home wraps around them, celebrating the engagement of nature while maintaining privacy from neighboring homes. Working within height restrictions intended to keep massing as low to the ground as possible, we moved the ground plane up and the expression down to present an appearance of a home that lives low. Calculated plays on scale and proportion intentionally have different effects from different vantage points, ensuring the viewer perceives the architecture as humanly scaled from each important introduction to the home. Ascending a landscape stair that winds around the central oak and extends into the entry vitrine sitting at base flood, the entry foyer operates at two scales as limestone stairs matching the exterior ascend between walls passing portals that reveal limited views of activity within.

KOI carp is a recurring symbol of Japanese culture, highly appreciated by its decorative purposes, not only in water gardens but also in Irezumi practice or, most commonly, in tattoos. Its natural colour mutations reveal their capacity to adapt, just like the KOI washbasin that you can use to create a better sense of space division in your ambiences. The KOI scales that compose the panels of the washbasin shine and reflect – on its brass surface – the sun caught throughout the clear water. KOI and the Japanese word for love or affection are homophones, making the carp also a symbol of love and friend - ship.
