The original house was demolished to make way for a two-story house on the sloping lot, with an accessory dwelling unit below. The upper level of the house, at street level, has three bedrooms, a kitchen and living room. The “great room” opens onto an ocean-view deck through two large pocket doors. The master bedroom can look through the living room to the same view. The owners, acting as their own interior designers, incorporated lots of color with wallpaper accent walls in each bedroom, and brilliant tiles in the bathrooms, kitchen, and at the fireplace tiles in the bathrooms, kitchen, and at the fireplace. GOAT designed the St. Roch Avenue Shotgun House as an affordable single-family housing prototype. To date, three homes have been constructed in New Orleans by SBP with teams of volunteers. The houses were designed to continue the evolution of the city’s residential architecture while responding to the concerns of neighborhood residents regarding context, familiarity, and affordability. The resulting three homes, built on the same block in the Milneburg neighborhood of Gentilly, establish a case study in how modern architecture can meet the challenges of neighborhood revitalization with sensitivity. By relating to the scale, rhythm and texture of the traditional New Orleans neighborhood, the St. Roch Avenue Shotgun is reminiscent of a traditional New Orleans home. By incorporating modern materials and construction methods, vaulting interior spaces, adjusting the historic shotgun layout, and adding some contemporary flair, it functions like a modern home.

Taking out the enclosed shower wall and making a zero entry shower opened up this bathroom space and made room for an angled free standing tub. We painted current cabinets and added new quartz countertops, mirrors, lighting and cabinet hardware.

"As seen in the picture, I use the pebble 3/4'' tiles for my home gym. I was concerned about installing a workout area in a room with a tile floor, so I elected to go with the thicker foam tiles. Greatmats was awesome- I requested three samples from them, which arrived quickly and were free! It was extremely helpful being able to compare the densities, weights, and textures of all three samples side-by-side. The other two samples were roughly a half-inch thick and it was apparent the 3/4'' was the way to go for my purposes. I try not to drop any weights- more to take care of the equipment than out of a fear of damaging the underlying tile- but I love the peace of mind the mats give me to set down a deadlift relatively firmly or letting a weight slip out of my hand and not have to worry about any damage to the floor below. The density is perfect- firm enough to not feel 'squishy' underfoot (I was concerned about my feet sinking in and being unstable during squats, but that hasn't been an issue), but still enough cushioning to soften a weight being dropped. Installation was a breeze- I went to Home Depot and bought a 3' straightedge which helped tremendously. Because I installed wall-to-wall, I had to trim about a half-dozen tiles. Just make sure you have a fresh blade on your utility knife and the cuts will go much faster. I have yet to mop it or spill any water on the floor other than sweat, but I haven't noticed any liquid seeping through and they're very easy to sweep/mop up. There was never a sense of being pushed into anything we didn’t like. They listened, carefully considered our requests and delivered an awesome plan for our new bathroom. Kerry also broke down everything so that we could consider several alternatives for features and finishes and was mindful to stay within our budget. He accommodated some on-the-fly changes, after construction was underway and suggested effective solutions for any unforeseen problems that arose. Having construction done in close proximity to our master bedroom was a challenge but the excellent crew TaylorPro had on our job made it relatively painless: courteous and polite, arrived on time daily, worked hard, pretty much nonstop and cleaned up every day before leaving. When I first met Chris, she walked me through her lovely home frustrated by the task at hand and the unfinished, uncohesive, disjointed spaces. Everything was beige, spread about in odd configurations and lacked any personality. "Chris" a pretty blue eyed blonde, was nowhere present. I liked the lines of the furniture and after discussing Chris's favorite colors, needs and wants, we decided to reupholster the formerly "all beige" furniture in blue and whites and add drapes to coordinate. As with many families, wear and tear was a concern. Chris, with three kids, a hubby and Doodle named Maddie, was no exception. We chose fabrics that looked pretty, had a soft hand but would stand up to Kool Aid and muddy paws. The blue and white area rug, is polypropylene and relatively indestructible, yet soft to the touch. We rearranged the furniture, opening up the space to the adjoining Dining room for flow and added Full length drapery to the exhiisting shutters for warmth and charm. As you can see, the end result is a cheerful, playful mix of color and texture. Read Less
