LOS ANGELES, CA / SINGLE FAMILY RESIDENTIAL
The Bel-Air House sits above Hollywood, along scenic Mulholland Drive, the storied thoroughfare that acts as a winding referee between the compact density of the San Fernando Valley, and the more ex-urban conditions of Los Angeles. In contrast to the client’s weekend beach house, here the client envisioned a home that could share equally in the energy of the city, and the rustic qualities of canyon living. The resulting home is both minimal and refined—its abstract forms read against the wilder aspects of its nominally natural setting.
As a patron of music, and the arts, the client’s creative interests suggested the overall design approach: A simple yet sophisticated backdrop for the presentation of recitals, and the display and appreciation of beautiful artifacts. The house avows a museum-like attitude—the rich but restrained material palette draws from the colors and textures of the Santa Monica Mountains, and opposes natural with refined, polished with honed, quietly confirming a reverential aspect to this “temple on the hill”.
The focus of the house is a dark and silent pool. Intended as a space of emptiness, the pool is an enigmatic statement—at once a source of origin for the house, as well as its apparent conclusion. The spatial aspects unfold from this moment, with the various rooms revolving around this essential void. The pool and its open rotunda echo the reservoir in the canyon below the house, while the ocean beyond ultimately underscores the house’s strong commitment to water.
Simple stone walls, taut rooflines, and disciplined and minimal detailing allow the home to act as an armature for the client’s personal expression of taste and creativity. In complement to the client’s Mussel Shoals House, which suggests a relationship with the vast, and ever-widening horizon, the architectural resolution of the Bel-Air House emerges from the sheltered and enveloping emotion of the canyon.

Things To Know About Traditional And Structural Steel Home Construction
Constructing a home is not an easy task. It requires a lot of planning. Traditional ways to construct a home would include stick framing, wherein the frame would be setup and the skeleton of the home would be created followed by building each floor and finally the roof. Another method is using concrete. Though this is widely used worldwide it is not used that prominently in US homes. Though the traditional methods of construction are good, a new and energy efficient construction method has come into being namely structural steel home construction.
The advantages of structural steel for building homes are manifold. Firstly steel is very strong and in the construction business steel is used because it combines strength with flexibility. A home is prone to various types of stresses and steel because it adapts well to the stress levels is able to withstand these external pressures. In fact, the ability of steel to adapt is the main reason that it is preferred in earthquake prone areas. Big buildings and bridges are made of steel because steel is able to handle stress.
Another advantage is that unlike wood steel is fire proof. Usually wooden homes are prone to fire hazards hence steel is a better option. Steel can exist for a number of years without causing any problems. If taken care of properly and if rust is prevented then steel structures can last for a very long time.
Steel is environment friendly and steel can be recycled and put to use again and again. If you need to make renovations or if you need to change the whole building setup then you can do so easily as the steel can be recycled and redone to suit the changes you require.
Structural steel construction has also come a long way. Earlier everything was done on site, but now the steel structure is fabricated in factories and just assembled on the building site. In fact, structural steel construction has advanced so much that the whole building is created in the factory and is setup on the building site using cranes.
Structural steel construction has very low environmental impact and it is also very energy efficient. Structural steel construction is not just widely used in the residential arena but also in commercial, industry and military too.
However, the biggest advantage that structural steel construction has over other traditional home construction methods is the time saved. If a traditional home construction method takes 6 months to build, the same home using structural steel construction would take only 3 months. You will benefit immensely by saving time.
In conclusion, we can safely say that choosing a structural steel home is the better option as it will save time and money without compromising on quality.

A derivation/evolution of the first prototype and grain bin experiment. Unfortunately the effort stopped short of the logical conclusion which would use less materials and take less time to erect. It would not sell for as much. I'll get around to it sooner or later.

This Poolside Patio Kitchen & Living Area project consisted of a large multiple tier Techo-Bloc Patio surrounding the inground swimming pool complete with pergola, outdoor kitchen, and landscape lighting.
The project began with the installation of the upper patio at the back entrance to the home. Following installation of this patio the pool was then installed. an outdoor entrqace from the basement was installed with poured concrete sidewalls and steps. After main installation of the pool was complete we installed a large redi-rock retaining wall around the perimeter of the property to bring it up to grade. We then began with surrounding techo bloc patio around the pool with additional walkway from the backyard to the driveway at the side of the home. Planting beds with landscaping and landscape lighting were installed around the patio and backyard area. The top patio was outfitted with a challenger outdoor kitchen Including a 32” grill with rotisserie and sear burner, grill cover, built-in trash can drawer, sink and faucet, multiple cabinets for added storage and a beautiful granite counter top. A large cedar pergola was installed over the raised patio area. The pergola is attached to house and includes down lights installed in pergola rafters. The landscape lighting system is installed using FX Luminaire system, with zoning, dimming, and color changing capabilities.
This is the first Phase of a two phase project to also include outdoor audio, lower patio area, pavilion, and fire feature. Stay tuned for the epic conclusion.

This thoughtful design approach creates a sense of unity and connection throughout the home, offering a sophisticated yet tranquil living experience for its residents.
The Design Concept: "Pass By Spaces"
The underlying philosophy of the project centers on the concept of “Pass By Spaces”—a circulation strategy that serves as the spine of the home. By utilizing this continuous circulation, the design allows the different spaces to interact with one another naturally. From the family living room to the study, guest areas, and private bedrooms, each function flows into the next through this unified circulation, creating a harmonious journey through the home. This approach not only enhances spatial connectivity but also fosters a sense of movement, encouraging ease and fluidity in daily living.

Main Circulation:
The hallmark of this design is its single-spine circulation, which connects all key areas of the home. This circulation serves as the backbone of the house, facilitating smooth transitions between private and social spaces. The careful placement of rooms ensures that the flow is intuitive and unobtrusive, allowing each space to remain distinct while still being interconnected.
Interior Layout:
• Bedrooms: The home features five generously sized bedrooms, each designed to offer privacy and comfort. Some bedrooms include private terraces, providing residents with an intimate outdoor space.

Design Considerations
A primary focus of the design is to maximize natural light and ventilation throughout the home. The strategic placement of windows, terraces, and open spaces ensures that every room benefits from an abundance of daylight and fresh air, creating an airy and welcoming environment.
Sustainability also plays a key role in this design. Eco-friendly materials are incorporated to ensure energy efficiency, while landscaping is carefully integrated to maintain harmony between the indoors and the surrounding environment. These design elements allow the home to feel like a serene retreat amidst the urban landscape of Gampaha.

This image captures a serene tea space designed with Bamboo Plywood as the primary material, perfectly blending the tranquility of Japanese Minimalism with the elegance of Neo-Chinese aesthetics.
Our Core Products and Design Philosophy:
Custom Bamboo Tea Set: The entire furniture set—the table and chairs—is crafted from natural, light-toned Bamboo Plywood. Bamboo's unique warmth and distinct grain introduce a calm, natural atmosphere to the tea room. The lines are clean and fluid, with the chairs featuring a subtle horseshoe-shaped armrest, nodding to classic Asian furniture design.
Structure and Detail: Both the tea table and chair backs feature rhythmic vertical slat (or lattice) detailing. This is a modern interpretation of traditional window lattices and screens, creating a sense of lightness, transparency, and visual texture.
Ambiance Integration: The light wood tone of the furniture complements the backdrop of the Japanese shoji screens/bamboo blinds, creating a harmonious and unified look. The pop of red from the tea runner and the small green plant add vitality to the overall quiet elegance.
Conclusion: This bamboo furniture collection is more than just functional; it embodies a lifestyle dedicated to simplicity, nature, and sustainable, high-quality living.

White Kitchen Cabinets: Timeless Elegance for Modern Homes
White kitchen cabinets are more than just a design choice; they're a testament to timeless elegance and adaptability in the heart of any home. As homeowners continue to seek spaces that feel airy, clean, and spacious, white cabinets have emerged as a top choice for both modern and traditional kitchens alike.
Why Choose White Kitchen Cabinets?
Versatility: The neutral hue of white allows these cabinets to blend seamlessly with any color palette or kitchen design. Whether you're aiming for a sleek modern look or a cozy cottage vibe, white cabinets can be the perfect canvas to achieve your desired aesthetic.
Brightness and Space: White reflects light beautifully, making your kitchen appear larger and more open. It's especially beneficial for smaller spaces, where creating an illusion of a more expansive area is crucial.
Timeless Appeal: While trends come and go, white has an enduring appeal. It exudes a sense of cleanliness and simplicity, making it a long-lasting choice for homeowners.
Resale Value: If you ever consider selling your home, white kitchen cabinets can boost your property's appeal to potential buyers, ensuring that your kitchen remains stylish and up-to-date.
Pairing with Other Elements
The adaptability of white kitchen cabinets means you can play with various colors and textures. Whether it's a vibrant backsplash, granite countertops, or wooden flooring, the neutrality of white ensures that everything comes together harmoniously.
Maintenance and Durability
A common misconception is that white cabinets can be challenging to maintain. However, with today's advancements in paint and finishes, white kitchen cabinets are resistant to stains and easy to clean. Furthermore, any marks or stains are quickly spotted, ensuring that you can address them promptly, keeping your cabinets in pristine condition.
Conclusion
White kitchen cabinets are not just a fleeting trend. Their unmatched versatility, the spacious feel they bring to any kitchen, and their timeless beauty make them an excellent choice for homeowners. Whether you're renovating your kitchen or designing a new one, consider the elegance and adaptability that white cabinets can bring to your space. With proper care and the right design elements, your white kitchen can be a showstopper for years to come.
