This scattered-site, self-guided tour benefits Operation FINALLY HOME, an organization that provides custom mortgage-free homes to combat-wounded U.S. military veterans and their families. First, the width of the existing sunroom did not align with the front or rear elevation of the home. These offsets would make creating a seamless interior space a challenge. The existing vintage 40-inch range also lacked proper ventilation, yet the client wished to accommodate a refrigerator, dishwasher, cooktop, double ovens, built-in microwave, and effective venting above the cooktop into the new kitchen layout. To honor the original millwork, beaded inset-style cherry cabinetry was selected in a soft, hand-rubbed finish that will deepen over time and develop a natural patina. Charcoal-gray soapstone countertops complement the cabinetry while reinforcing the historic character of the home with an organic, timeworn texture. The former breakfast nook was transformed into a butler’s pantry, adding valuable base cabinet storage and expanded work surfaces for frequently used small appliances. Also in the butler’s pantry, a single upper cabinet was paired with open shelves to give an open, airy feeling while adding character and practical storage. Connie and Bob were looking for more elbow room in their compact cottage home overlooking Canandaigua Lake. With the original cottage in excellent condition, the plan was to maintain much of the structure, from siding to the deck to the roof. The most logical path to a balanced, comfortable, increase in size was to craft timber frame additions on each side of the existing home. The larger, lake facing addition used traditional scissor trusses and includes additional loft space off the master bedroom with a unique, square lookout perch. Just north of Seattle, this family home is tucked away on a magical parcel of land within the Edmonds city limits. Designed to maximize the site’s breathtaking views, it is carefully sited to blend into its wooded setting while opening fully to expansive views. On our first visit, we found a secluded forest glade with stunning vistas of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains perched atop a high seaside bluff. Preserving and enhancing this singular landscape as the surrounding neighborhood fills in with development was central to our design. The approach is intentionally restrained—the home does not reveal itself entirely upon arrival. The house is composed of two wings that cradle the meadow, making it the most important “room.” Interior spaces are oriented towards the lush landscape and impressive views framed by mature trees. The structures are kept close to the perimeter, leaving the center of the site unbuilt. A covered bridge with a green roof acts as a front porch, linking the upslope garage/office with the main house. A gentle stair flows through the gap between the structures, drawing visitors into the clearing. The floorplan is highly efficient, carefully tuned to the family’s daily routines. Each room is exactly suited to its purpose, yet no larger than needed. An open corner with double-height windows creates a jewel-box dining room. Free of a corner structure, the home expands to encompass the covered patio for outdoor cooking and dining, plus easy access to the kitchen, encouraging year-round outdoor living. Human-scale moments are intentionally created, from a stairway window seat with peekaboo views to a covered outdoor extension of the great room that fosters a cozy relationship between interior and exterior. Client’s Request: The client wanted to enlarge the bathroom to create a more spacious and luxurious environment. Renovation Details Expansion: Wall Movement: The wall between the hallway and the master bathroom was moved 2 feet to increase the bathroom’s size. Plumbing Upgrades: New Water Pipes: Installed for the new shower, vanity, and toilet. Drainage: A new shower drain and toilet drain were installed to accommodate the updated layout. Electrical Enhancements: Recessed Lighting: Installed 4 new recessed lights to improve illumination. Heated Floor: Added a new heated floor for enhanced comfort. Fixtures and Finishes: Vanity: Installed a beautiful, modern vanity to improve storage and aesthetics. Medicine Cabinet: Included a new medicine cabinet to provide additional storage and convenience.
