This St. Helena residence was an exciting enhancement from a regular backyard into a hidden oasis, based on our clients’ vision. They desired a “secret garden” that was drought resistant and included a large vegetable garden that could produce a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. We delivered a unique and cohesive backyard that has something new to discover around every corner. The backyard features a “rock river” that solves drainage issues and ensures the garden thrives year-round. Designed with drought-resistant plants native to California, the landscaping incorporates numerous succulents to create a lush, low-water environment. The centerpiece of the backyard is the prized vegetable area, featuring custom vegetable boxes. We continue to work closely with the client to find new ways to update the space by filling bare spots, adding vibrant color hues, and rotating the crops. By maintaining this collaborative partnership, we have crafted a dynamic and ever-evolving secret garden that continues to delight the clients and their guests.

Our clients chose a modern tile was in the shower and on the floor to provide a continuous flow. We used Lanmark solid surfacing as the shower pan in this bathroom as it has no grout lines and is easy to maintain. The matching tile base trim continued the pattern in the floor up onto the trim vertically. We installed a Signature Hardware vanity made in bamboo, and replaced the countertop and undermount sink. George Kovacs Saber II lights were used to frame the new mirror. Hansgrohe shower fixtures and faucets were installed in brushed nickel. Sherwin Williams White Shoulders paint was applied to add more brightness to this lovely bathroom. OUR INSPIRATION - When we enter a space, we want our designs to feel as organic as possible, imbued with the latest in trends and technology. Our first instincts were to derive our inspiration from the simplicity of the homes design, the beauty of the surrounding landscape and its historic characteristics. As we continued to explore the nature of this project further, we were faced with a couple of existing design elements in the home that were to remain; the marble and travertine checkerboard floor, as well as the entrance hall wallpaper. With the floor, since it is a classic design, we knew we had to maintain a base of traditional styling. The wallpaper expanded our inspiration, specifically from its seemingly Persian iconography with its curvilinear natural elements (seen in the tile) juxtaposed with sharp clean lines (seen on the countertop edges).

The lower floor of Ice House is organized around an open kitchen and living space that emphasizes material continuity and craft. Custom millwork in Russian birch defines the kitchen, providing warmth and precision within a highly functional layout, while a custom white oak stair acts as a sculptural connector between levels. Venetian plaster walls introduce a soft, tactile surface that contrasts with the exposed timber frame ceiling, maintaining a sense of continuity with the upper level. Polished concrete floors ground the space, reinforcing its durability and understated industrial character while supporting the home’s overall balance of warmth and restraint.

This is a Sunroom Addition. It involved removing the Kitchen's existing exterior wall and adding a new Sunroom Addition, open and connected with the existing Kitchen. A new high counter was added for barstools adjacent the kitchen sink area as well as a new large island accommodating the "kids" while mom prepares dinner. The addition incorporates lots of glass windows, a continuous bench seat (with storage beneath) along an outside wall as well as a table for eight and a special "beverage center" for entertaining. Matching hardwood flooring lets one space smoothly "flow" into the next. All this is carefully designed while maintaining an uninterrupted Kitchen "work triangle" that allows the cook to remain a part of the "event".

A double walk-in shower is enclosed in low-iron frameless glass, maintaining clarity and uninterrupted sightlines to the surrounding landscape. Dual shower systems include an overhead rain head , a wall mounted multi-function shower head and handheld fixture in a graphite finish. The integrated stone bench serves as both a bathing shelf and shower seat while maintaining a curbless transition. Large-format tile walls and continuous flooring reinforce the seamless, architectural nature of the space. Views to mature trees and filtered daylight elevate the daily ritual into a spa-like experience while preserving privacy.

This project included a Patio Cover Addition, Outdoor Kitchen, Gas-Burning Fireplace, and Stamped Concrete walking surface with a custom pattern. The attention is immediately drawn to the Ledgestone fire place with a rustic cedar mantel. The Ledgestone flows continuously throughout the space, found on the base of the patio columns and outdoor kitchen. The kitchen sparkles with Stainless Steel appliances, containing storage compartments, refrigerator, and grill. Topped with Venetian Gold Granite, this cooking space provides ample counter space that is easily maintained. The overall appeal of this Outdoor Living area remains beautifully traditional, with cedar-trimmed columns and beams. Also, though it has custom features, this addition is built to look original to the home with matching paint, shingles, gutters, and framing materials. The elaborate, pre-stained Tongue and Groove ceiling is quite an attractive feature to this patio cover, and the recessed lighting illuminates the evening. The fans provide adequate air-flow and the sound system keeps the patio atmosphere in tune.

We undertook a full house renovation of a historic stone mansion that serves as home to DC based diplomats. One of the most immediate challenges was addressing a particularly problematic bathroom located in a guest wing of the house. The miniscule bathroom had such steeply pitched ceilings that showering was nearly impossible and it was difficult to move around without risk of bumping your head. Our solution was to relocate the bathroom to an adjacent sitting room that had 8’ ceilings and was flooded with natural light. At twice the size of the old bathroom, the new location had ample space to create a true second master bathroom complete with soaking tub, walk-in shower and 5’ vanity. We used the same classic marble finishes throughout which provides continuity and maintains the elegant and timeless look befitting this historic mansion. The old bathroom was removed entirely and replaced with a cozy reading nook ready to welcome the most discerning of houseguests.

This stunning one-acre garden, within walking distance of downtown Bethesda, was designed and installed by our firm in 2004.. LPI continues to maintain it today. The owners, devoted gardeners, wanted to utilize as much of the existing plant palette as possible but also to have space for a pond, a cutting garden, and expanses of lawn. The biggest challenge proved to be coping with the prodigious amount of water on site due to an underground spring and drainage issues posed by it and the topography of the site. In 2010 this garden won an Award of Merit from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, , a Grand Award from the MD*DC*VA Landscape Contractors Association, and an Environmental Improvement Award of Distinction from PLANET. ©Melissa Clark Photography. This modern farmhouse enjoys the best of both worlds with a classic front porch and stylish curb-appeal. A second sprawling porch to the rear continues outdoor enjoyment. The open floor plan maintains an easy flow for families to relax and enjoy meals together. The master suite is free of distractions and tucked away for privacy while the utility room with laundry sink is nearby for convenience. Two additional rooms are available for children, guests, or a study.

The primary closet was designed as a built-in millwork environment rather than a storage room. Cabinetry configuration, shelving rhythm, and drawer placement were resolved during the design selection phase to support daily use while maintaining visual order. A central window seat introduces symmetry and natural light, creating a focal point that softens the linearity of the cabinetry walls. Open shelving, concealed drawers, and integrated hanging zones establish a clear organizational hierarchy, allowing function to remain seamless and visually quiet. Material selection stays restrained — warm wood tones, soft textiles, and subtle hardware — reinforcing continuity with the home’s architectural palette. The result is a primary closet that reads as composed interior architecture: efficient, tailored, and scaled for routine without excess.
