The design for this home in Palo Alto looked to create a union between the interior and exterior, blending the spaces in such a way as to allow residents to move seamlessly between the two environments. Expansive glazing was used throughout the home to complement this union, looking out onto a swimming pool centrally located within the courtyard.
Within the living room, a large operable skylight brings in plentiful sunlight, while utilizing self tinting glass that adjusts to various lighting conditions throughout the day to ensure optimal comfort.
For the exterior, a living wall was added to the garage that continues into the backyard. Extensive landscaping and a gabion wall was also created to provide privacy and contribute to the sense of the home as a tranquil oasis.

Removing walls and a two sided fireplace allowed this space to open into a great room concept. A fireplace along the outside wall brings an anchor to the space. Wood beams were added for visual interest to the tall vaulted ceiling, large windows received new trim, new patio doors and shiplap along the fireplace all contribute to the design of the space.

Looking back toward the entry gate, the open slat fence contributes to an airy see-through character while providing safe enclosure for the owner’s small dog. The asymmetrical design creates a more expansive feel and rhythm. Trellis panels and vines will be added in the future.

With its coffered ceilings, white-on-white color scheme, and the sun streaming in the floor-to-ceiling windows, the expansive room exudes peace. The additional painted built-in cabinet across from the fireplace helps frame the room, and our suggestion of a mirrored television above the fireplace contributes rather than detracts from the room’s graces. Three re-paneled arches between living and dining room give the passageway a pleasing formality.

In the master bath, porcelain floor tile in a slate gray clads a feature wall fronting the freestanding tub and dual entry shower. Floating vanities and a dropped ceiling framed with wood contribute to the master bath’s minimalist, zen-like ambiance.
