Inspiration for a transitional kitchen remodel in Minneapolis

A Kirkwood, MO couple needed to remodel their condo bathroom to be easily accessible for the husband in his power chair. The original bathroom had become an obstacle course and they needed a streamlined, efficient space. The new design moves all plumbing fixtures to one wall, which creates a large, open space to maneuver in. A wall-mounted sink works nicely whether standing or sitting. A standard toilet is outfitted with a bidet seat with remote control operation. The barrier-free, walk-in shower has two impressive accessibility features. The shower faucet panel incorporates a hand held shower, a rainfall head and 8 adjustable nozzles in one convenient, temperature-controlled package. In the opposite corner is a full body dryer with manual or timer control. Add two kinds of durable and easy to clean floor tile (the blue shower tile also appears on the sink backsplash!), serene grey onyx shower surround and wall paint, and they have a bathroom that makes a beautiful and productive difference in their lives. At just over 2500 square feet, this hillside walkout design offers great curb appeal and a functional floor plan to suit any family’s needs. Stone and cedar shake complement the home’s rustic styling and an angled courtyard garage adds convenience. The main level features a convenient study/office, unique dining room with tray ceiling, vaulted great room with fireplace and built-ins and a breathtaking octagonal breakfast room that showcases rear views. Both the dining room and kitchen enjoy easy access to the spacious walk-in pantry. The secluded master suite is an enviable retreat, complete with tray ceiling, two walk-in closets, rear porch access and master bath with large shower. The lower level includes two more bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a recreation room and plenty of storage space.

Access to the Master Bathroom is made easy from the kitchen/laundry area. Upon entering the bathroom, the roll up sink and medicine cabinet are easily accessible. There is wainscoting wall protection that is carried in from the adjacent hallway that easily blends with wainscoting height tile in the bathroom as well. The toilet is extra high comfort height and sits at 21" so that access from the wheelchair is easiest. There is a linen cabinet across from the toilet that provides for drawers for bathroom items and supplies and for linens and towels on top. The shower threshold could not be eliminated, so we extended the shower bench over 21" into the bathroom floor so that easy transfer could be made from the wheelchair onto the bench in the bathroom, The handheld shower is located within easy reach of the bench with all bathing supplies conveniently located in an easily accessible niche. Although not all grab bars are shown here, there is one at the sink to help her stand up, a pull down bar near the toilet, a vertical bar to help standing up from the toilets, an angled bar from the bench to stand up and a horizontal and vertical grab bar in the shower itself. Note that we selected the basic grab bar to install over any designer grab bar for maximum safety and comfort. From the Master Bath, a hallway leads to the closet and the Master Bedroom. We widened the hallway to access the closet to 42" wide, and increased the size of the door to enter the closet from 24" to 36" and eliminated the door to improve overall access. The closet was built in and provides for all her items that were previously in a dresser in her bedroom. This way, she can go into the closet and get all items needed to dress without going back into the bedroom for undergarments.

The landing now features a more accessible workstation courtesy of the modern addition. Taking advantage of headroom that was previously lost due to sloped ceilings, this cozy office nook boasts loads of natural light with nearby storage that keeps everything close at hand. Large doors to the right provide access to upper level laundry, making this task far more convenient for this active family. The landing also features a bold wallpaper the client fell in love with. Two separate doors - one leading directly to the master bedroom and the other to the closet - balance the quirky pattern. Atop the stairs, the same wallpaper was used to wrap an access door creating the illusion of a piece of artwork. One would never notice the knob in the lower right corner which is used to easily open the door. This space was truly designed with every detail in mind to make the most of a small space.

Architecture & Design by: Harmoni Designs, LLC. This long island provides ample entertainment space for guests. It was also designed to provide the kids with a place to hang out and do homework or to help mom in the kitchen. Power and electronics charging was built-in for convenient access while being carefully hidden from view.
