Our clients recently purchased a beautiful hillside home in Broadview. What started as a simple kitchen refresh turned into a full-scale renovation to address structural issues and achieve a modern aesthetic. The top priorities for the client’s kitchen were a space for entertaining and to enjoy the sweeping Sound views. The existing late-90s kitchen was outdated and the walls separated the kitchen from the rest of the home. To achieve this, we removed both sides of internal walls and reconfigured plumbing and structural support. The clients, who are artists and photographers, highly valued aesthetics. Collaborating with their designer, known for using industrial materials in commercial spaces, we aimed to bring these elements into the kitchen. We created a design that maximized the views and integrated industrial and mid-century styles, featuring steel shelving and quartz countertops that resembled concrete. Instead of using traditional concrete flooring, we opted for concrete tiles. Believe it or not, those tiles are 2x4 feet long! It took two of our team to set each one. Recommended by their designer, large tiles like these are often used in commercial buildings, but the designer knew they were a cost effective (and beautiful) solution for this home. The renovation also included: A much larger island for cooking and entertaining, custom-made faucets with hot and cold taps, a built-in refrigerator, and a double beverage fridge at the end of the island. We put in two laminated cabinets in two contrasting colors: Wilsonart White Cypress and Wilsonart Black Velvet Traceless. Lastly, we installed hydronic floor heating and AC, ensuring comfort year-round. The result is a beautifully modern kitchen that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. This project exceeded the clients' initial expectations, transforming their kitchen into the heart of their home.

This was a unique kitchen designed for a customer that loved symmetry. To complete this kitchen, we combined two cabinet lines. We selected Cabico for the island because of their customization ability. The island countertop as you can see was produced in glass and we had to make provisions for a recessed stainless-steel rail and cabinet tops to allow the installing of lighting to illuminate the underside if the glass. For the perimeter cabinets we selected our RTA (Ready-to-Assemble) Conestoga Wood cabinets as a cost effective alternative yet still offer the quality and precision the customer insisted upon.

The contemporary style house is linear in nature creating a diametric form against the organic landscape. The opposing forms do well in showcasing each other in their contrast. The grand open floor plan welcomes you in as the views of the surrounding mountain range parade the backside of the home. The 12’ span of glass creates a feeling of being amongst the outdoors while enjoying the comforts of the home. Ample light floods into the home with a row of clerestory windows in the two-story great room. This home was truly built for entertaining, with a 12-person dining table, two living rooms, a bunk room, and a large outdoor entertaining area with a dual-sided fireplace. Glo A5f double pane windows and doors were selected since modern profiles and cost-effective efficiency were a priority. The aluminum series boasts high-performance spacers, multiple air seals, a continuous thermal break, and low iron glass with sleek durable hardware. Selecting the flange (f) profile of the series allows for a conventional install to an otherwise exceptional window. The clarity and size of the windows and doors showcase the true beauty of the home by allowing the outdoors to flood into the space. The strategic placement of awning windows fixed windows and tilt and turn windows promotes intentional airflow throughout the home.

Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Homes Location: Boulder, CO, United States This LEED Platinum certified modern farmhouse is our first “regenerative home,” producing more energy than it consumes. This 3,900 s.f. custom home uses passive solar design, 10.2kW of solar photovoltaics, a ground source heat pump, double wall well-insulated exterior envelope, high performance doors and windows, to achieve a HERS negative 8 rating and Energy Star v.3.0 certification. The interior has low-VOC finishes and custom built-in FSC-certified wood and beetle kill pine cabinets throughout. The site is designed to be very low water use, incorporating permaculture and urban farming, with raised planting beds and a passive solar chicken coop/greenhouse. What makes this project special is its combination of extraordinary sustainability with conventionally attractive, cost-effective design tailored to the owner’s needs.

After working with this client on their home a few years ago, we were given the opportunity to create a landscape design for one of their multi-family properties. The goal was to create a landscape that not only enhances the property and fits the style of the building, but is also as cost effective and low maintenance as possible. We achieved this by keeping a limited plant palette, utilizing gravel and artificial turf, and exploring various options for hardscape and screening to achieve the desired look without blowing the budget. To keep the space feel open, we opted for a glass enclosure instead of solid hardwood walls. This was a more cost-effective way since building a solid wall would require us to install plenty of insulation. Having glass wine enclosures would only require us to seal the edges, and we did it by using U-channels and adding a little bit of spray foam. I declined at that time because as team we have chosen to be referral based, not advertising based. Even with turning him down, he and his wife decided to sign on with us for their basement... which then upon completion rolled into their main floor (part 2). They wanted a very distinct style and already had a pretty good idea of what they wanted. We just helped bring it all to life. They wanted a kid friendly space that still had an adult vibe that no longer was based off of furniture from college hand-me-down years. Since they loved modern farmhouse style we had to make sure there was shiplap and also some stained wood elements to warm up the space. This space is a great example of a very nice finished basement done cost-effectively without sacrificing some comforts or features.

This sleek and neutral style bathroom gives you cleaner showering and tubbing while probing to eliminate that last little space at the back of the tub where mold and mildew can grow. The shower enclosure attaches directly to the tub, so you no longer have a gap between the wall and the tub, where grimy soap scum can build up. This custom, high-performance home was designed and built to a LEED for Homes Platinum rating, the highest rating given to homes when certified by the US Green Building Council. The house has been laid out to take maximum advantage of both passive and active solar energy, natural ventilation, low impact and recyclable materials, high efficiency lighting and controls, in a structure that is very simple and economical to build. The envelope of the house is designed to require a minimum amount of energy in order to live and use the home based on the lifestyle of the occupants. The home will have an innovative HVAC system that has been recently developed by engineers from the University of Illinois which uses considerably less energy than a conventional heating and cooling system and provides extremely high indoor air quality utilizing a CERV (conditioned energy recovery ventilation system) combined with a cost effective installation.
