When a world class sailing champion approached us to design a Newport home for his family, with lodging for his sailing crew, we set out to create a clean, light-filled modern home that would integrate with the natural surroundings of the waterfront property, and respect the character of the historic district. Our approach was to make the marine landscape an integral feature throughout the home. One hundred eighty degree views of the ocean from the top floors are the result of the pinwheel massing. The home is designed as an extension of the curvilinear approach to the property through the woods and reflects the gentle undulating waterline of the adjacent saltwater marsh. Floodplain regulations dictated that the primary occupied spaces be located significantly above grade; accordingly, we designed the first and second floors on a stone “plinth” above a walk-out basement with ample storage for sailing equipment. The curved stone base slopes to grade and houses the shallow entry stair, while the same stone clads the interior’s vertical core to the roof, along which the wood, glass and stainless steel stair ascends to the upper level. One critical programmatic requirement was enough sleeping space for the sailing crew, and informal party spaces for the end of race-day gatherings. The private master suite is situated on one side of the public central volume, giving the homeowners views of approaching visitors. A “bedroom bar,” designed to accommodate a full house of guests, emerges from the other side of the central volume, and serves as a backdrop for the infinity pool and the cove beyond. Also essential to the design process was ecological sensitivity and stewardship. The wetlands of the adjacent saltwater marsh were designed to be restored; an extensive geo-thermal heating and cooling system was implemented; low carbon footprint materials and permeable surfaces were used where possible. Native and non-invasive plant species were utilized in the landscape. The abundance of windows and glass railings maximize views of the landscape, and, in deference to the adjacent bird sanctuary, bird-friendly glazing was used throughout. Over the years, my jobs have involved collaborating with homeowners, business owners, architects and contractors analyzing and designing plans for new construction and remodels, renovating kitchens, designing fireplaces, cabinetry, lighting, window treatments and furnishings. THEME The main theme for this room is an active, physical and personalized experience for a growing boy. This was achieved with the use of bold colors, creative inclusion of personal favorites and the use of industrial materials. FOCUS The main focus of the room is the 12 foot long x 4 foot high elevated bed. The bed is the focal point of the room and leaves ample space for activity within the room beneath. A secondary focus of the room is the desk, positioned in a private corner of the room outfitted with custom lighting and suspended desktop designed to support growing technical needs and school assignments. STORAGE A large floor armoire was built at the far die of the room between the bed and wall.. The armoire was built with 8 separate storage units that are approximately 12”x24” by 8” deep. These enclosed storage spaces are convenient for anything a growing boy may need to put away and convenient enough to make cleaning up easy for him. The floor is built to support the chair and desk built into the far corner of the room. GROWTH The room was designed for active ages 8 to 18. There are three ways to enter the bed, climb the knotted rope, custom rock wall, or pipe monkey bars up the wall and along the ceiling. The ladder was included only for parents. While these are the intended ways to enter the bed, they are also a convenient safety system to prevent younger siblings from getting into his private things. SAFETY This room was designed for an older child but safety is still a critical element and every detail in the room was reviewed for safety. The raised bed includes extra long and higher side boards ensuring that any rolling in bed is kept safe. The decking was sanded and edges cleaned to prevent any potential splintering. Power outlets are covered using exterior industrial outlets for the switches and plugs, which also looks really cool.

This 3,300 SQFT house, includes 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, Family Room with a Roof Terrace. The site is a narrow and long corner lot. Wanting to celebrate the length of the site, and preserved the existing tree; we designed a very linear house with a courtyard, to protect the tree's critical root zone, and to maximize outdoor living.

This beautiful custom home in Somerset County, NJ used Kitchen Classics for the full kitchen, all bath cabinetry, custom bookcase, laundry room, and mud room treatments. Having one contractor handle so many critical finishing elements in a home makes life easier for both the builder and homeowner.

Meet Soren Mair: Soren is our Field Operations Manager at Owen Homes and has been with our team since 2015. He started as a Trim Carpenter, then Crew Leader and in 2020 developed into the Field Operations Manager. Soren is another set of eyes onsite focused on quality; checking in at critical phases of construction for additional internal inspections of the structure and installed materials. He also takes care of small construction tasks and assists our trade partners with the more complex, skilled labor items. After Soren and your Project Manager have completed the final punch list, Soren will follow up during the warranty period to address your concerns.

A mid-construction look at the demolition phase. Here, our crew is prepping the space by removing the outdated drop-in gas cooktop and blue tile countertops. This critical prep work laid the foundation for rerouting utility lines to accommodate the new high-end integrated appliances and modern induction cooktop seen in the final design.

Smart technology was incorporated into this Needham bathroom remodel as part of a whole house overhaul. The client was looking for a clean, modern look while maximizing space. Lighting was critical as there are no windows in this pass-through bathroom. The mirror uses an environmentally-friendly LED light strip which reduces energy waste. Also, the backlit design is a natural and soft light, your eyes can easily adapt and is more suitable for makeup. There is a USB port and two additional outlets inside. An organizer on the first shelf keeps clutter off the counter.

These homeowners wanted to freshen up their master bath and at the same time, improve it's overall function and retain/accentuate it's vintage qualities. There was nothing wrong with the hex tile floor, toilet, or vintage tub. The toilet was repurposed, the floor was cleaned up, and the tub refinished. Cabinetry and vintage trim was added in critical locations along with a new, taller one-sink vanity.
