This home is a European inspired French country home. The exterior color palette and materials are boldly authentic to the architectural vernacular – complete with limestone accents and gas lanterns. Symmetry, balance and proportion are deliberately used throughout the home, as well as the landscaping. The interior of the home is adorned with layers of specialty trim starting from the moment you enter the foyer. A curved stair invites you into the main living areas and were arranged to create an open floor plan but are still delineated by use of ceiling treatments and keen furniture placement. Outdoor living is functional and private with an outdoor kitchen and covered porches overlooking the pristine greens at Chanticleer Golf Course. Marble is used extensively in the master bath with his and her areas. The second floor has multiple bedrooms with on-suite baths as well as a second living room for the enjoyment of guests.

Located in the highly sought-after Allwood neighborhood of Darien, this spec house is the fourth collaboration with a client who first began with a renovation of her own home. While architecturally it is a traditional home from the exterior, the interiors are more transitional in style. In order to compete in the speculative market, our client’s directive was clear – ‘differentiation the kitchen design from every other spec house’. So we incorporated painted cabinetry but highlighted with rift-cut white oak base cabinets. This contrast between these finishes influenced our decision to select a subtle white quartzite countertop to deliberately highlight the striking porcelain backsplash. The steel and glass partition frames the space – drawing the eye to the focal point of the kitchen, the custom stainless steel hood. Gold hardware adds a pop of flair to the space and warms the room. Walnut drawer inserts, stainless steel appliance garage, pull out trash drawers with compost bins and a stylish desk make this the Gold Standard of spec houses.

AT ITS ORIGIN IS THE SPIRIT OF PURE CONSCIOUSNESS. | What comes after form? What value do we give to things in an age when good design and well-conceived functionality are self-evident requirements? These considerations were the starting point for developing a series of fittings that is seriously reserved in terms of form and which focuses on the deliberate, sensual experience of the element of water. MEM does not have an extroverted design; instead, the fitting becomes the interface between the architecture and the user – leaving room in everyday use for personal cleansing rituals in the bathroom. | Available at www.shopstudio41.com

Large walls painted Origami White envelop a deliberate, streamlined arrangement of seating areas, furniture selections, wall cladding, and a strongly articulated kitchen space. Kitchen cabinetry the color of gathering storm clouds draws the black and white artwork depicting strong surf on the far wall into focus. Natural light casts strong linear shadows along the east wall providing a visual linear counterpart to the wall panels.

This project design was all about that zen, well-traveled lifestyle. We softened chunky, farmhouse furniture pieces with down-to-earth boho details and lots of layered textures. We stayed within an earthy color palette with hints of cool blue to keep it calming and added lots of soft, natural textures. We layered in lots of accent pillows and throws to balance the masculine lines of the furniture. Most of the final elements we chose feature natural materials with hand-crafted details such as raw marble, iron, brass, glass, wood, wool, cotton, leather, grass, etc. We deliberately mixed materials and textures to achieve that eclectic collected-over-time effect.

Insights, vistas, perspectives. This private house in France can be divided into two clear architectural axes – inside and outside – fusing seamlessly together. Large window frontages as well as entrance and pool areas separated by solid wood struts play with light and shadow, now revealing now concealing. The modern building exudes a friendly, welcoming atmosphere while creating a harmonious the interplay of intimate homeliness and prestigious openness. The clear lines, handle-less fronts, and soft color scheme in the kitchen are very appealing. Everything revolves around the central island unit, which connects the functional area with sink and hob to an adjoining wooden table. As the very heart of the design, the cooking and dining island is deliberately reduced to essentials. Continuing the color concept and playing with the natural warmth of Highland oak and a light, softly matt frosty white, the large yet minimalist unit run with an integrated sideboard is a perfect fit.
