A primary bath that makes no effort to reconcile its influences — and is better for it. A hand-finished copper clawfoot slipper tub occupies the center of the room on a geometric patterned floor tile in white and slate gray. A traditional black raised-panel double vanity with a matte black stone countertop faces brass-framed arched mirrors flanked by brass globe sconces, with wall-mount chrome cross-handle fixtures providing a deliberate material contrast. A dark glass shower enclosure set within an arched opening closes the room without enclosing it. The result is layered and characterful — Victorian Revival in mood, contemporary in restraint.

The original house was built in 1951 for a Jewish immigrant family from Libya. At first it was a tiny unit, typical of the houses built by the Jewish Agency in those years. Through the years, as the family grew, the house was enlarged.
In the renovation process I preserved its central elements which represented it along the years and were an integral part of its form and content. Into those I weaved new content to accommodate it for its new lodgers – a cook and a designer.
As the walls and the ceiling were exposed, a unique visual form was created which led to a clear deliberation as to the proceedings of building the house. The oldest part, which belonged to the first unit, contains the kitchen, dining area and bedroom. The room at the entrance, which was a later addition, is now singled out by a "carpet" of grey floor tiles. On the other end of the house which contains the living room, wooden roof beams belonging to the original house had been exposed and preserved, as well as the old book-shelves, which were an important core of the original house.

Lighting or illumination is the deliberate use of light to achieve a practical or aesthetic effect. Lighting includes the use of both artificial light sources like lamps and light fixtures, as well as natural illumination by capturing daylight. Day-lighting (using windows, skylights, or light shelves) is sometimes used as the main source of light during daytime in buildings. Proper lighting can enhance task performance, improve the appearance of an area, or have positive psychological effects on occupants.
Indoor lighting is usually accomplished using light fixtures, and is a key part of interior design. Lighting can also be an intrinsic component of landscape projects.

For years we lived with an ugly, too small and wimpy builders grade mantel that I couldn't wait to tear out. Turns out it made the perfect support for my new custom, one of a kind mantel. I conceived, designed and had this piece built onsite by my favorite carpenter. I wanted it to look like a continuous piece of wood that wrapped around on the edges, like I had seen done on benches, but with a live edge on the bottom not the top. This is a hand chosen, stunning Bubinga plank and it's feature is the variegated wood tones - it "goes with" everything!
I also had the floating picture frame custom made to make my favorite tree canvas art more in scale with the fireplace and wall. This tree stands next to our fire pit in Door County, WI and is a favorite view we wanted to bring home. The small chrome lamps are a deliberate play on scale for a touch of the unexpected.
The two trunks are antique indonesian pieces. The one on the left holds my firewood in the winter and the one on the right is the perfect place to store all of the media components.

The interesting veining pattern of the black soapstone creates movement in the entire design of this kitchen, encouraging the eye to move diagonally across the room. After extensive deliberation, a Brazilian soapstone from The Stone Studio's soapstone inventory was selected by the homeowner.

A DEANE client returned in 2022 for an update to their kitchen remodel project from 2006. This incredible transformation was driven by the desire to create a glamorous space for both cooking and entertaining. The frameless cabinetry with a mitered door and satin brass hardware is deliberately understated to highlight the marble. Dramatic and bold, the continuous, book-matched Panda White marble was used throughout the open footprint, including the fireplace surround, to give the space a cohesive feel. The custom, tapered hood, also covered in Panda White is a commanding centerpiece. The expansive space allowed for two waterfall-edge islands with mitered countertops - one for cooking with black-stained oak cabinets for storage and a prep sink, and the second to seat 6 for dining, which replaced the original informal eating area. A tray ceiling with wallpaper detailing elegantly frames both together.
No detail was overlooked in the design process. A coffee station with retractable doors and beverage drawers was situated to graciously welcome guests. A Wolf 60” range, walnut interiors, customized drawer inserts, unlacquered brass finishes and a Galley Workstation elevate this kitchen into a truly sophisticated space.

This project design was all about that zen, well-traveled lifestyle. We softened chunky, farmhouse furniture pieces with down-to-earth boho details and lots of layered textures. We stayed within an earthy color palette with hints of cool blue to keep it calming and added lots of soft, natural textures. We layered in lots of throw pillows to balance the masculine lines of the furniture. Most of the final elements we chose feature natural materials with hand-crafted details such as raw marble, iron, brass, glass, wood, wool, cotton, leather, grass, etc. We deliberately mixed metals to achieve that eclectic collected-over-time effect.

Cream-colored stone steps with a hand-chiseled edge rise through the hillside, gravel paths winding between them. The soft, cool tones were chosen deliberately — a calm counterpoint to the warmer stone of the existing retaining wall below. Boulder walls create layered garden spaces on either side, bringing both stability and calm to this sloped backyard. At the top, a bench hangs from a grand cedar, a place to stop, sit, and take in the view beyond.

It takes a special kind of client to embrace the eclectic design style. Eclecticism is an approach to design that combines elements from various periods, styles, and sources. It involves the deliberate mixing and matching of different aesthetics to create a unique and visually interesting space. Eclectic design celebrates the diversity of influences and allows for the expression of personal taste and creativity.

Creating a large Kitchen with a large bench style table coming off it combines the spaces and allowed for steel tube elements in combination with stainless and timber benchtops. Combining materials adds depth and visual interest. The playful and unexpected elements like the elephant wallpaper in the kitchen create a lively and engaging environment.
The swapping of the spaces created an open layout with seamless integration to the adjacent living area. The prominent focal point of this kitchen is the island.
All the spaces allowed the client the freedom to experiment and showcase her personal style.

Designed as assignment from both the Dutch gardening magazine Groei & Bloei and the television and radio nature program Vara's Vroege Vogels, this garden serves as a model of how homeowners can incorporate lots of plant life and wildlife into the design but without sacrificing practicality or aesthetics. The garden is deliberately contemporary in its style to emphasize that nature-rich gardens need not look a certain way - insects and birds don't care if the lines are straight or curved.
At the same time the garden makes use of affordable, simple, no-nonsense materials. The 40x60 cm paving stones are one of the most common and affordable paving options in the Netherlands, available en masse for free on the Internet. Conceptually we imagined a garden completely paved with the tiles (as to many gardens are) and what would happen if took out some of these stones, used them to build benches and structure and added plants where the tiles had been. In the construction of the benches we include other materials such as bamboo sticks and insulation bricks that create habitat for insects such as solitary bees.
The plant palette is based on a selection of native and host plants in combination with the 26 plants plan set up by Groei & Boei -- a list of plants aimed at making the use of more plants in gardens accessible and less intimidating. The choice for the number 26 corresponds with the number of letters in the alphabet in line with the famous Dutch garden designer Mien Ruy's comment that if we only need 26 letters to create a whole language, we should be able to combine and mix 26 plants to express far more than we think.
