Placed on a large site with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy at the rear boundary, this one story residence presents a modest, composed public façade to the street while opening to the rear yard with two wings surrounding a large loggia or “outdoor living room.” With its thick walls, overhangs, and ample cross ventilation, the project demonstrates the simple idea that a building should respond carefully to its environment. Getting into and out of freestanding tubs is always a discussion topic we cover thoroughly with clients. There's blocking in that column for future vertical grab bar installation if needed, and the platforms can help stabilize one's progress in and out. This tub has a thicker rim which would allow one to perch a minute - and there's a seat inside the tub which makes it a bit easier, too. No matter what, one needs to be very careful getting into and out of these tubs as was demonstrated quite clearly in the first season of Downton Abbey.

Raised garden beds constructed of dry stacked urbanite (salvaged concrete) demonstrates a purposeful and useful reclamation of what would have been a waste product. The raised beds provide easier access to garden without having to stoop all the way to ground. Filled with compost and irrigated with soaker hoses to conserve water.
