Simple, neat and elegant is the only way to describe Wendy Auxillou's kitchen design for her lovely penthouse Apartment in Caye Caulker. We were so honored to work with her in bringing her ideas to life!

The Courtyard Oasis project encompasses what abarnai does best; remodeling a space with an emphasis on functional installation artwork. Our clients wanted a beautiful and tranquil outdoor space as a seamless extension of their indoor living space. They initially described the outdoor area as a drainage ditch, and to transform it into a Courtyard Oasis required detailed design work and creative collaboration. An open central patio, with custom trellises as a living focal point, was the starting point of the design to connect the indoor and outdoor spaces and allow the courtyard area to be divided into different zones -- for relaxing, entertaining and gardening. The abarnai team loved this project because they go to completely revamp the area and utilize a wide variety of design and building skills, including patio construction, custom trellis artwork, composite decking and stairs, a wood retaining wall, feature lighting systems, planting areas, and a sprinkler system.

Five stars isn’t enough! Our project was to reconfigure and update the main floor of a house we recently purchased that was built in 1961. We wanted to maintain some of the unique feeling it originally had but bring it up-to-date and eliminate the closed-in rooms and downright weird layout that was the result of multiple, partial remodeling projects. We began with a long wishlist of changes which also required replacement of very antiquated plumbing, electrical wiring and HVAC. We even found a fireplace that had been walled in and needed major re-construction. Many other aspects and details on this incredible list we made included an all new kitchen layout, converting a bedroom into a master closet, adding new half-bath, completely rebuilding the master bath, and adding stone, tile and custom built cabinetry. Our design plans included many fixtures and details that we specified and required professional installation and careful handling. Innovative helped us make reasonable decisions. Their skilled staff took us through a design process that made sense. There were many questions and all were answered with sincere conversation and positive – innovation – on how we could achieve our goals. Innovative provided us with professional consultants, who listened and were courteous and creative, with solid knowledge and informative judgement. When they didn’t have an answer, they did the research. They developed a comprehensive project plan that exceeded our expectations. Every item on our long list was checked-off. All agreed on work was fulfilled and they completed all this in just under four months. Innovative took care of putting together a team of skilled professional specialists who were all dedicated to make everything right. Engineering, construction, supervision, and I cannot even begin to describe how much thanks we have for the demolition crew! Our multiple, detailed project designs from Raul and professional design advice from Mindy and the connections she recommended are all of the best quality. Diego Jr., Trevor and his team kept everything on track and neat and tidy every single day and Diego Sr., Mark, Ismael, Albert, Santiago and team are true craftsmen who follow-up and make the most minuscule woodworking details perfect. The cabinets by Tim and electrical work and installation of fixtures by Kemchan Harrilal-BB and Navindra Doolratram, and Augustine and his crew on tile and stone work – all perfection. Aisling and the office crew were always responsive to our calls and requests. And of course Clark and Eric who oversaw everything and gave us the best of the best! Our clients had been living in a rancher with just one bathroom for 4 family members. Needless to say, it was time to expand. There was plenty of room on their lot to add an entire master suite and a third bathroom. We transformed their cramped little rancher into what we can only describe as laid back luxury. Since natural light would now flood the addition through the new window placements, we wanted to build off the airy feeling that the new space would evoke. We chose classic finishes like light wood tones, marble and penny tile, and hues of calming blue in the kids bathrooms for a pop of color. Classic polished nickel fixtures adorn the bathroom walls and countertops, and elegant bronze lighting and hardware adds just enough contrast to pull the whole look together.

This beautiful secluded house and art studio, hand built by a Japanese Potter, has been given a new life as a writing studio for its owner. The building, having been neglected and uninhabited for some time, was in danger of being demolished. The owner’s recognition of the underlying spirit of the place, in what can only be described as a labor of love, worked with the designers and the artisans to bring this building back to life. The stone cylinder at the center of the building houses bathrooms and mechanical systems, allowing the remainder of the building to remain open. The new cedar posts, stair, custom cabinets and handcrafted sliding doors are among the details that were chosen to complement the restoration of the underlying building, ensuring a long life for this peaceful retreat.

Timber frame builders Chris Neill and Dwayne Keim, along with investor Jacques Berten, had decided to build a spectacular, 4,000-square-foot timber frame barn home near Eureka, Montana. Modern farmhouse describes this open concept, light and airy ranch home with modern and rustic touches. The couple wanted to bring the flavor of their Lone Star State garden and its spatial relationships to lush Palm Beach, and they wanted to spend time outdoors. The resulting carefully articulated garden features a series of “rooms” for dining, lounging and entertaining – day and night – arrayed around a classically elegant pool. The layered plantings provide a richly textured green backdrop with palm trees offering some shade. Colorful accents come from bright pink blooms of bougainvillea climbing the side of the house and wrapping about the brick columns of an existing pergola that was redesigned and relocated to one end of the pool. kitchen At the center of this sophisticated home is a clean, bright kitchen that is full of personality. The large contrasting island is wrapped in ebony cabinetry and topped with a Calacatta Gold quartz countertop; creating the perfect gathering place for friends and family. The highlight of this kitchen must be the custom walnut exhaust hood. Extended the full width of the counterspace, the vertical grain walnut conceals the exhaust hood as well as recessed lighting. This is wrapped on all sides by deep pantries, finished in a warm white cabinetry to match the base cabinets below. On the left, a double wall oven is perfectly positioned for ease of cooking while providing visual balance to the fridge on the opposite wall. A tall pantry to the right of the cooktop delineates an adjacent bar area, complete with wine fridge and open shelving to match the kitchen. Warm hardwood flooring extends seamlessly into the kitchen space, complimenting the warmth of the walnut and contrasting the black and white cabinetry. The backsplash tile is a spin on the classic subway, the hand-made white tiles dotted with copper accents. Together, the contrast of dark and light, warm and cool finishes come together in this kitchen to create a space that can truly be described as the heart of the home.

The show piece of the entire renovation was converting the existing dining room into a beautiful and spacious kitchen. A brick wall was opened up to allow more natural light from the sunroom into the kitchen and the original fireplace was kept helping blend the old with the new and keeping the character of this unique home. With the remodeled space, Steller was also able to create a butler’s pantry where most of the appliances are hidden to create the new “messy kitchen” trend. Now that kitchens have become the center of entertainment and more open to the rest of the home, homeowners feel compelled to keep countertops free of clutter. The trend is to hide the ovens, coffee makers, and other large appliances around the corner or in an oversized pantry where they remain ready-to-use, but out of sight.

When used to describe interior design, zen refers to bringing peace, relaxation, and harmony. A bathroom is a natural choice for zen style as it is a room in which it’s important to be comfortable and relaxed. That’s likely why many top destination spas use zen-inspired style to pamper their clients.
