Plenty of storage surrounds the cooking stations providing large countertop space and seating nook for two. The beautiful natural quartzite is a show stopper throughout with it’s honed finish and serene blue/green hue providing a touch of color. Mother-of-Pearl backsplash tiles compliment the quartzite countertops and soft linen cabinets. The level of functionality has been elevated by moving the washer & dryer to a newly created closet situated behind the refrigerator and keeps hidden by a ceiling mounted barn-door. By reconfiguration the bathroom layout to accommodate a walk-in shower and dual vanity, we took advantage of every square inch and made it functional and beautiful! A pocket door leads into the bathroom suite and a large full-length mirror on a mosaic accent wall greets you upon entering. To the left is a pocket door leading into the walk-in closet, and to the right is the new master bath. A natural marble floor mosaic in a basket weave pattern is warm to the touch thanks to the heating system underneath. Large format white wall tiles with glass mosaic accent in the shower and continues as a wainscot throughout the bathroom providing a modern touch and compliment the classic marble floor. A crisp white double vanity furniture piece completes the space. The journey of the Yosemite project is one we will never forget. Luxurious modern take on a traditional white Italian villa. An entry with a silver domed ceiling, painted moldings in patterns on the walls and mosaic marble flooring create a luxe foyer. Into the formal living room, cool polished Crema Marfil marble tiles contrast with honed carved limestone fireplaces throughout the home, including the outdoor loggia. Ceilings are coffered with white painted crown moldings and beams, or planked, and the dining room has a mirrored ceiling. Bathrooms are white marble tiles and counters, with dark rich wood stains or white painted. The hallway leading into the master bedroom is designed with barrel vaulted ceilings and arched paneled wood stained doors. The master bath and vestibule floor is covered with a carpet of patterned mosaic marbles, and the interior doors to the large walk in master closets are made with leaded glass to let in the light. Q: Can you describe your home’s style? A: We spent a great deal of time researching the style and history of the classic “Ontario Farmhouse”. We wanted the exterior to appear unassuming and as if it had been there for a long time.

Having lived in their new home for several years, these homeowners were ready to finish their basement and transform it into a multi-purpose space where they could mix and mingle with family and friends. Inspired by clean lines and neutral tones, the style can be described as well-dressed rustic. Despite being a lower level, the space is flooded with natural light, adding to its appeal. BlueStar Regional Winner Pamela Polvere, Pamela Polvere Designs Location: Elmwood Park, IL Project Name: Greifenstein Kitchen This kitchen and breakfast room remodeling project was done for a family with 5 daughters and 3 dogs. This victorian farmhouse was built in the early 1900’s. The homeowners described their new space as wanting an “open, airy, brighter and lighter” look and feel. They had just remodeled their front porch and purchased a new Pella front door. The color is ‘Sparkling Teal’ and it matched perfectly the BlueStar color “RAL 6027 Light Green”.

BUILDING HISTORY From Whitney to Modern Like the city in which it sits, the Whitney Modern is a distinctive blend of innovative contemporary design and historic New England charm. The Cottage and Carriage House at the Whitney Modern were designed in the Shingle Style by Richard Williams, architect of many of New Haven’s most notable buildings, including the New Haven County Courthouse and the Union League Club (now the Union League Café). The residence was built in 1902 as a single family home for Abner Hendee, a prosperous grain merchant, and was later owned by Dr. William Verdi, a prominent surgeon, who was one of the founding physicians of St. Raphael’s Hospital and its Surgeon-in Chief until 1949. The home, known as the Abner Hendee house, was described by architectural historian Elizabeth Mills Brown in New Haven: A Guide to Architecture and Urban Design, as "one of New Haven’s most romantic houses and long a landmark of the upper Avenue. It was built in open country, empty fields behind running down to the river and the Rock. Like the classic country houses of the Shingle Style it was designed as part of the land, a design of horizontals. The great shadow of the porch was as mysterious and cool as a cave in the woods, and a porte-cochere carried the long line out into the grounds, holding the house close to the earth and terminating in a low pillar that seemed another part of nature – a tumble of stones.” After 50 years as a private residence, in 1957 the house and carriage house were sold to the American Red Cross, which continued to use the property as its local headquarters for the next 60 years. The Whitney Modern team purchased the property from the Red Cross with the intention of preserving its historic features while remaking it for a new century as the iconic anchor of an intimate luxury rental community. The Cottage has been meticulously renovated into seven boutique residences. The grand main staircase, closed off for years, has been rebuilt. Original marble and tiled fireplaces have been restored and converted to gas. Coffered ceilings have been retrofitted with recessed lighting. Bathrooms have been outfitted with marble mosaic flooring. Raised paneling and pocket doors have been repurposed and hardwood floors have been reclaimed. Gracious spaces have been renewed while modern technology has been added to make each boutique residence function with the ease of a newly built building – from Nest thermostats, to in-unit washer/dryers, to central air conditioning. The house has been reborn.

They always loved their house – its shape and size, and the piece of land it sits on; but the interior left a lot to be desired. In fact, they hated it. They wanted it to be aesthetically more pleasing and to have much more function and flow. These homeowners challenged Lagois to make it the home of their dreams, and that’s exactly what happened. One of the homeowners loves to cook, but the kitchen was dark. The space was difficult and frustrating. The new kitchen is bigger, brighter, and more functional. It now has all the prep space he needs and the task lighting he always wanted. They also love their new spa bathroom, which is beautiful and warm and exactly what they had in mind. One of the homeowners describes himself as fussy and impatient, and at first he had been anxious about the whole prospect of renovation. He said afterwards that the team made him feel comfortable, listened to, and unconcerned. One factor that made them so at ease with choosing Lagois was the “in house” aspect of their services. The person who designed their home, the one who did the drawings, and the person who managed the construction are all Lagois employees. The homeowners liked knowing those critical functions weren’t outsourced. Another thing they love about their home is the finishes that are exactly to their taste. The homeowners are delighted with the new interior of their home. It is now something they love – both outside and inside.

kitchen At the center of this sophisticated home is a clean, bright kitchen that is full of personality. The large contrasting island is wrapped in ebony cabinetry and topped with a Calacatta Gold quartz countertop; creating the perfect gathering place for friends and family. The highlight of this kitchen must be the custom walnut exhaust hood. Extended the full width of the counterspace, the vertical grain walnut conceals the exhaust hood as well as recessed lighting. This is wrapped on all sides by deep pantries, finished in a warm white cabinetry to match the base cabinets below. On the left, a double wall oven is perfectly positioned for ease of cooking while providing visual balance to the fridge on the opposite wall. A tall pantry to the right of the cooktop delineates an adjacent bar area, complete with wine fridge and open shelving to match the kitchen. Warm hardwood flooring extends seamlessly into the kitchen space, complimenting the warmth of the walnut and contrasting the black and white cabinetry. The backsplash tile is a spin on the classic subway, the hand-made white tiles dotted with copper accents. Together, the contrast of dark and light, warm and cool finishes come together in this kitchen to create a space that can truly be described as the heart of the home.

Timber frame builders Chris Neill and Dwayne Keim, along with investor Jacques Berten, had decided to build a spectacular, 4,000-square-foot timber frame barn home near Eureka, Montana. The timber barn was to combine the rustic charm of a barn home with a soaring, modern barn home interior that Neill describes as reminiscent of a “Soho barn loft.” Photo by Gibeon Photography

This space was an addition off of an existing small living space, which was designed by an architect who created a beautifully dramatic, two-story, living space by angling walls and making the living room area 2 stories high, with an overlook at the top of the spiral staircase to the second floor. The appliances were already set in place, and the homeowners did not want to move the existing plumbing, electrical, or venting, so I had to work within those parameters. They wanted a contemporary, industrial, feel for the kitchen, which I believe is described as Midcentry Modern, was acheived by using slab-style doors and drawers, mixing painted with walnut veneered finishes, along with other custom and unique items. The soapstone was a must-have for the homeowners, providing a source for the painted cabinetry color, which draws out the beautiful veins in the countertop. They needed pantry space, and as much usable storage as possible for the space, which included the angled wall that the refrigerator was on, along with not crowding the walk space between that wall and the necessary column adjacent to it. By building in the refrigerator with panels on either side to conceal the refrigerator "box", I was able to create a storage section which included a 2-drawer base for storage of larger items, with 2 pantries flanking either end, with contrasting walnut floating shelves in between. along with that custom section, in order to provide additional storage, and counter space, I created a free-standing piece, which had to feel like a part of the kitchen, yet also feel like a furniture piece, when viewed from the living room. In order to achieve that look, I used 3" wide columns to frame the piece, which I also repeated as floating shelves in the middle, to house their crockpot, but most importantly, a "home" for their roomba. The island also provided the space for separate pull-out trash and recycling bins, which I did not have space for elsewhere. Collaborating with the homeowners on this project enabled me to design a kitchen that was in a style that I hadn't had the opportunity to design in before, and I now appreciate and love this style myself!

Bryan and Rachel took an unusual approach to designing their IKEA kitchen: they left the design decisions to IKD. They weren’t quite sure where everything needed to go, so they purchased the IKD design design package and gave us free reign with the layout and cabinet configuration. How does Bryan describe the result? “Phenomenal.” “Our designer literally got inside my brain and created the perfect kitchen for our family. I have no idea how she did it, but it was perfect.” Do you agree? Take a closer look at the kitchen.
