Our client is a devoted grandmother who asked us to make the house kid friendly. We divided the sunken family room from the living room by a custom railing to protect the children but still kept the open flow of the entire first floor.

The large island becomes the main gathering space, with one side dedicated as a prep area with a handy prep sink and the other side devoted to seating. The working side of the island functions with the opposite kitchen counter and large farmhouse sink, and the paneled hidden dishwasher and garbage/recycling bins. The clean minimalist cabinet surface provides elegant display space for devotional ornaments and floral decor, a functional and decorative furniture piece tailored to local Filipino cultural living needs, perfectly matching the home’s unified light luxury white-gold tone system.

This light and bright bathroom includes a stunning stained glass mosaic from Oceanside Glass Tile. The chevron pattern is more contemporary but the neutral colors keep it classic. The use of a more solid white tile for the top half helps balance the space. Filling the niche with the same decorative material is a nice finishing touch. The main bathroom floor is a 12X24 porcelain tile laid in a way to mimic some of the movement from the chevron pattern. Beautiful!

The great room is devoted to the entertainment of stunning views and meaningful conversation. The open floor plan connects seamlessly with family room, dining room, and a parlor. The two-sided fireplace hosts the entry on its opposite side. A reclaimed attached one-car garage became a much-needed command central kitchen - organized in zones for cooking, dining, gathering, scheduling, homework and entertaining. With a devotion to design, a stunning, custom, nickel Ann Morris pot rack was chosen as a focal point, appliances were concealed with painted, raised-panel cabinetry and finishes like white quartzite countertops, white fireclay sinks and dark stained floors added just the right amount of light and color.

I love seeing a house go up from the blueprints to the end of the build. It is always a journey filled with a thousand decisions, some creative on-the-spot thinking and yes, usually a few stressful moments. This Naperville project was a collaboration with a local builder and architect. The Kitchen Studio collaborated by completing the cabinetry design and final layout for the entire home. Access to the back of the house is through the mudroom which is outfitted with just about every possible storage feature you can think of for a mudroom. For starters, the basics – a locker for each family member. In addition to that, there is an entire cabinet with roll outs devoted just to shoes, one for cleaning supplies and one for extra coats. The room also features a small clean up sink as well as a set of refrigerator drawers making grabbing a Gatorade on the way to soccer practice a piece of cake.
