Tigerwood cladding on the door of an existing stand alone grill, creates the illusion of a built in grill, with beautiful cedar countertops on either side. The homeowner wanted to keep the Spanish/Mexican flavor of this 1939 Craftsman bungalow in Point Loma. She was fearless in her color choices for the backsplash to reflect this esthetic. Since the kitchen is open to the dining room and living room, we decided to add the color on the backsplash with neutral white Craftsman style cabinets as the background. This Metallica Crispa Ajuga groundcover is planted within the River-Run rock, to create an image of running water. It "bubbles & flows" within the River-Run Rock which disperses into and throughout the permeable Bitter-Root slate patio.

The concept of the garden was based on, “Brazilian Hummingbirds II”, a painting the MFAH has in its collection by the artist, Martin Johnson Heade. Heade travelled to the rainforest in Brazil between 1863 and 1864 and painted a series of small paintings depicting hummingbirds in the lush foliage of the Brazilian rainforests. His painting, Brazilian Hummingbirds, II, evokes the sultry atmosphere of the Brazilian rainforest with its misty quality and subtle lighting. His interest in ornithology can be seen in his detailed depictions of the hummingbirds. The garden location is adjacent to one of Buffalo Bayou’s steep, wooded ravines. The ravine, with its native plant communities and topography, is a perfect back- drop for a garden with a rainforest theme. Because the date for the garden opening coincides with the spring migration of hummingbirds into our region, the hummingbird theme seemed appropriate for this garden competition. The garden will include a variety of tropical plants native to the rainforests such as bromeliads, orchids, heliconia, and passion fruit flowers. In addition, native plants to our region such as the Sabal Minor and Southern Wood Fern will be included to integrate plants that are found nearby in the ravine. The Heliconia flowers produce considerable amounts of nectar, a high energy food essential for hummingbirds who are known to consume three times their bodyweight in a single day. In addition to nectar producing plants, there will be hummingbird nest materials dispersed throughout the garden. A misty quality to the garden will be provided by a misting system, and tropical colored lights will be lit at night for special events. Visitors to the garden will have a unique sensory experience reminiscent to that of Heade’s travels to Brazil’s rainforests.

To create some visual interest, the designers dispersed pops of bright colors through out the room. Notice how your eye dances around to focus on the brighter colors.

Another angle. To reduce the overall expense, USI designed a beam to extend beyond the load bearing wall to allow for the light dispersement of the pendants to be in the correct location for the bar, while keeping the cost down since the GC did not need to re-engineer the load of this critical wall.

Adding Textures We positioned the homeowner’s antique table behind the sectional for art projects and crafts. The homeowner’s rattan chairs add texture. The lamps – one with burlap shade and one with large glass base – bring in natural elements.The linen drapery panels frame the large window covered in a soft fabric shade. The antique sewing machine is the perfect size for the corner. The homeowner’s unique pottery and colorful artwork complete the vignette. Piano Nook The wall opposite the window is home for the family’s piano. We continued with our accents colors with the accessories, artwork, and textiles. The armed floor lamp is perfect for the low club chair we reupholstered in this fabulous paisley fabric. The black armoire houses toys, blankets and extra linens. The colorful artwork and small chair finish off the corner. The gray carpet with a subtle pattern is soft underfoot and the perfect backdrop for all of the pops of color dispersed through the large space. This Frankfort Home: Basement Family Room is a light airy space with pops of wonderful oranges and dark teals and proves that the basement does not have to be a dungeon or graveyard for your leftover furniture.
