Updated country French design fits easily in this charming colonial home. The homeowner wanted the room to feel larger without expanding so we vaulted the ceiling. Adding beams and bead board draw attention upwards to allow for the expanded look desired. The crown moldings were remade to accommodate accent lighting and add a more formal feel. The original mantle was refreshed with a custom built over mantle that contain the tv and sound bar. Existing French doors and bookcases were restored and new hardware added.

“Greensboro’s Grandest House” was recently selected as the 2013 ShowHouse presented by the Junior League of Greensboro and national media sponsor Traditional Home. Among the local and national design talent featured in this special fundraising event was design duo Patti Allen and Stephanie James of Furnitureland South, who transformed the estate’s patio into a classic, colorful and cozy space. Built in the early 1920s, the Adamsleigh estate is more than 15,000 square feet and covers 13.5 acres that include pools, a lake, tennis courts, a stone gazebo and a five-car garage. The 30×60 patio presented a special design challenge – the space was in disrepair and sat unevenly on a downward slope. Rising to the challenge, Patti and Stephanie partnered with Outer Space Landscapes to change the elevation of the patio in order to draw attention to the focal point and inspiration of the project: a beautiful canopy sofa by Century Furniture. The addition of 6 tons of landscaping material included Pennsylvania blue stone, pebbles, sand, cherry trees, azaleas and geraniums all blooming in the colors of the latest Sunbrella fabrics featured in the outdoor furnishings: crisp, sandy white, fuchsia and tangerine. Patti and Stephanie wanted to showcase clean and classic outdoor style with an edge of color and unexpected elements. Playful ottomans by Baker float in the space for multiple functions, adding an extra pop of color to the sophisticated setting which includes a dining table by Oscar de la Renta, organic spot tables from Phillips Collection, and daybeds and seating from Century Furniture. The new kitchen features a layout that prioritizes openness, light, a beautiful view of the home’s backyard. Centered around a 4’x6′ island with countertop seating, the kitchen comfortably accommodates up to nine people, making it a perfect gathering place. A window over the farmhouse sink provides a direct view of the backyard garden, allowing the homeowners to watch their children play while cooking. A forest-inspired color palette governs the kitchens’ aesthetic, with deep green cabinetry and a custom tile backsplash adding texture and color. Floating shelves take the place of upper cabinets on most walls, keeping the space open and drawing attention to the backyard views and full-wall tile backsplash. The layout is designed for ease of movement, with ample counter space and a balance of work areas and seating to support everyday cooking and hosting.

We replaced the single chandelier with two subtly textured drum shades. This draws attention to the elongated table making a more dramatic space while remaining casual. We update the rug into a more transitional style, using modern colors with enlarged and traditional details.

We designed this 3,162 square foot home for empty-nesters who love lake life. Functionally, the home accommodates multiple generations. Elderly in-laws stay for prolonged periods, and the homeowners are thinking ahead to their own aging in place. This required two master suites on the first floor. Accommodations were made for visiting children upstairs. Aside from the functional needs of the occupants, our clients desired a home which maximizes indoor connection to the lake, provides covered outdoor living, and is conducive to entertaining. Our concept celebrates the natural surroundings through materials, views, daylighting, and building massing. We placed all main public living areas along the rear of the house to capitalize on the lake views while efficiently stacking the bedrooms and bathrooms in a two-story side wing. Secondary support spaces are integrated across the front of the house with the dramatic foyer. The front elevation, with painted green and natural wood siding and soffits, blends harmoniously with wooded surroundings. The lines and contrasting colors of the light granite wall and silver roofline draws attention toward the entry and through the house to the real focus: the water. The one-story roof over the garage and support spaces takes flight at the entry, wraps the two-story wing, turns, and soars again toward the lake as it approaches the rear patio. The granite wall extending from the entry through the interior living space is mirrored along the opposite end of the rear covered patio. These granite bookends direct focus to the lake.

This room originally had deep red Roman Shades that did not function properly. The client liked the idea of Roman Shades, but wanted a neutral palette to draw attention to her artwork and furnishings. These Vignette Modern Roman Shades from Hunter Douglas suited this purpose perfectly. We added the Literise cordless lift system for ease of use and magnetic hold downs on the door to keep the shade from swinging around as the door is operated.

Before the transformation this home was heavy traditional with a prolific use of European antiques. The furniture and art in the ample living room were under-scaled and lacking in cohesion. Clean lines and a neutral palette were introduced. Obelisk Home outfitted the entire living room with large comfortable furnishings in soothing grays, creams and reclaimed woods. A large library cabinet balanced the fireplace and was filled with antique books and the client’s aviary collectibles. A long reclaimed pine console was placed in front of a bank of windows drawing attention to the beautiful patio. A new client reached out with a desire to redesign the entertainment center in their family room. The entertainment center was made up of a traditional fireplace, an outdated media cabinet with a built-in bookshelf, and an unused nook on the right side of the room. Our client wanted a more modern, clean look. They greatly value symmetry and balance, but the existing layout, combined with the off-center ceiling beam and soffit above the nook, gave the whole space a clunky and asymmetrical feel. The goal was to provide balance to the entertainment wall, and add a more contemporary look to update the dysfunctional design. The fireplace was redesigned with a clean, linear, electric insert, and a television mounted above it, backed with decorative wood paneling. The dated bookshelves were removed, tiled over, and replaced with modern, floating shelves. Linear lighting was incorporated into the shelving to draw attention to the paneling and accessories. The spare nook was converted into a walk-up bar. Custom cabinetry was installed, along with a wine fridge, trash pullout, sink, and metal and glass shelving that beautifully displays glasses and bottles. The floating quartz hearth seamlessly connects the whole space, creating a sleek, modern, and balanced entertainment center that perfectly suits the client's taste.

In the kitchen, white cabinetry feels so fresh + classic and the black hardware we chose is the perfect punctuation to draw attention to details in the millwork. We chose a backsplash that has both grey and brown tones while still feeling simple enough to coordinate perfectly with the veined quartz countertop. A large window over the sink provides the space with an ample amount of natural light but we added in these fun geometric pendants lights over the island to help define the space and tie in the black hardware. The island itself is custom-stained in a finish the clients hand selected; in fact, it was one of the first things chosen in the whole house! Our homeowners were looking for a very contemporary look for this remodel to match the appliances they had picked out and the features they were planning to include. We worked directly with the clients to design and remodel their entire kitchen to meet their visual appeal and even suggested some unique and functional features they could use. To create the illusion of space within the 8 foot ceiling space, we ran the grain of the light, rift-cut, oak veneer vertically to draw attention to the height of the cabinets. We included an appliance lift for their juicer to maintain surface space, and added a special drawer for their dog's food, a pullout pantry for easy reach and depth, and extra storage space on the back of their island for functionality. Additionally, we added a custom table to coincide with their theme and aesthetic details, even helping them find a unique metal base to match perfectly.
