Beautiful wine collections need an equally beautiful display. Our customers located in the Streeterville area had an enormous collection, and we provided them with the added illusion of an enormous wine cellar! One of our favorite elements of this modern wine cellar is the mirrored ceiling. This is a creative trick to provide an infinite appearance that will elude to the idea of having hundreds of shelves! Each corner of this modern wine cellar is complemented by our different racking techniques. Our display shelves allow each bottle to have its own moment of appreciation, to create an artful look that is sure to impress. When our client approached us with an idea of housing their extensive wine collection in their modern high rise residence, we were thrilled! After viewing their incredibly modern home, we realized that we could not provide them with a traditional wine cellar. We were presented with an exciting task of reimagining our traditional displays, to a clean and sleek modern design. As designers, maintaining the flow of a home is very important to us and our mission is to enhance the home’s existing features. From the wine cellar door to the ceiling, we were able to bring our A-game and create a complementary extension to our customer’s home. Our custom wine cellar door is equipped with a matching threshold, that holds all of the cold air in place. When you take a step inside, you are greeted from floor to ceiling with exquisite design. From our customer’s collectible storage boxes to 4 upward facing display shelves, you are immediately aware that this is a work of art. Each display shelf is adorned with its own light strip that further draws attention to the collectible wine bottles. As you glance up further, you see our storage shelves in full force. Playing off of the vast collection, we decided to install a mirrored ceiling. This design element allowed us to have some fun, and to further accentuate the large collection. This modern wine cellar is complete with a clear glass insulated Modern door that creates a temperature-controlled environment, conducive for preserving wine for decades. As designers, we were presented with a wonderful opportunity to showcase several of our strong suits. We were able to provide our client with a modern wine cellar, as well as an engineered, temperature-controlled environment. It wasn’t necessary to overthink things when Axis Mundi designed interiors for an apartment at Brooklyn’s glass-sheathed 1 Grand Army Plaza, the luxury building by Richard Meier already endowed with all the “starchitect” bells and whistles, as well as drop-dead stunning views of Brooklyn, the harbor and Prospect Park. What did require considerable aptitude was to strike the right balance between respect for these assets, particularly the panoramas, and livability. The all-white scheme doesn’t just complement Meier’s own aesthetic devotion to this purest of pure hues; it serves as a cool backdrop for the views, affording comfortable vantage points from which to enjoy them, yet not drawing attention away from the splendors of one of the world’s most distinctive boroughs. Sleek, low-lying Italian seating avoids distracting interruptions on the horizon line. DESIGN: Astro Design Centre - Ottawa, Canada Photo @JVLPHOTO The couple are huge traditionalist, so Astro chose a detailing in the frame that evokes a very classic feel, and beautiful detail. The darker island was chosen to break the cappuccino-coloured perimeter cabinetry up from being all uniform. This classic stained walnut island is in the centre of the kitchen - stands out, yet doesn’t draw attention away from the beautiful stove wall. That detailing added an extra personal touch to the backsplash and a bit of old world charm.

This room originally had deep red Roman Shades that did not function properly. The client liked the idea of Roman Shades, but wanted a neutral palette to draw attention to her artwork and furnishings. These Vignette Modern Roman Shades from Hunter Douglas suited this purpose perfectly. We added the Literise cordless lift system for ease of use and magnetic hold downs on the door to keep the shade from swinging around as the door is operated.

In Frederick, Maryland, a design-build kitchen remodel incorporates local charm with modern touches, creating a functional and inviting space. This kitchen remodel blends traditional elements with contemporary design, making the space ideal for both daily use and entertaining. Here's a breakdown of the remodel, featuring a large island, a beverage station, and an Icelandic Picket ceramic tile backsplash above the gas range. 1. Large Island: The focal point of the kitchen is a spacious island, perfect for meal preparation, casual dining, and socializing. At about 8 to 10 feet long, the island features a high-end engineered quartz countertop, with subtle veining in shades of gray and white. This island is designed for both functionality and beauty, with ample storage beneath in custom cabinetry, including pull-out drawers, open shelves and deep cabinets. The island is finished with painted cabinetry in soft olive-green color, balancing the space with a touch of elegance. 2. Beverage Station: Adjacent to the island is a dedicated beverage station, positioned for convenience and style. This cozy nook includes a built-in coffee bar, and a sleek under-counter wine cooler, and drawers to store glassware and coffee mugs. The beverage station provides plenty of counter space for drink preparation and is thoughtfully integrated into the kitchen layout, so it’s easily accessible from both the dining area and living spaces. 3. Icelandic Picket Ceramic Tile Backsplash Above the Gas Range: Above the gas range, the Icelandic Picket ceramic tile backsplash makes a bold statement, drawing attention with its unique design and color palette. These elongated, picket-shaped tiles come in a range of soft, natural tones – think cool whites, subtle greens, and light grays – that evoke the serene beauty of Iceland’s landscapes. The tiles are installed in a chic, geometric pattern, creating a contemporary feel that contrasts beautifully with the traditional elements of the kitchen. Their glossy finish adds a sense of brightness, reflecting natural light from the large windows. The backsplash not only serves as a practical, easy-to-clean surface but also acts as a visually dynamic feature that ties the entire kitchen design together. 4. Local Touches and Context: Incorporating elements of the local Frederick style, the remodel emphasizes craftsmanship and functional beauty. The kitchen’s open-plan layout flows seamlessly into the dining and living areas, creating an inviting space for both intimate family dinners and larger gatherings.. This remodel captures the essence of Frederick, combining contemporary style with local tradition, all while making a bold statement with design choices that are both elegant and functional.

A new client reached out with a desire to redesign the entertainment center in their family room. The entertainment center was made up of a traditional fireplace, an outdated media cabinet with a built-in bookshelf, and an unused nook on the right side of the room. Our client wanted a more modern, clean look. They greatly value symmetry and balance, but the existing layout, combined with the off-center ceiling beam and soffit above the nook, gave the whole space a clunky and asymmetrical feel. The goal was to provide balance to the entertainment wall, and add a more contemporary look to update the dysfunctional design. The fireplace was redesigned with a clean, linear, electric insert, and a television mounted above it, backed with decorative wood paneling. The dated bookshelves were removed, tiled over, and replaced with modern, floating shelves. Linear lighting was incorporated into the shelving to draw attention to the paneling and accessories. The spare nook was converted into a walk-up bar. Custom cabinetry was installed, along with a wine fridge, trash pullout, sink, and metal and glass shelving that beautifully displays glasses and bottles. The floating quartz hearth seamlessly connects the whole space, creating a sleek, modern, and balanced entertainment center that perfectly suits the client's taste.

“Greensboro’s Grandest House” was recently selected as the 2013 ShowHouse presented by the Junior League of Greensboro and national media sponsor Traditional Home. Among the local and national design talent featured in this special fundraising event was design duo Patti Allen and Stephanie James of Furnitureland South, who transformed the estate’s patio into a classic, colorful and cozy space. Built in the early 1920s, the Adamsleigh estate is more than 15,000 square feet and covers 13.5 acres that include pools, a lake, tennis courts, a stone gazebo and a five-car garage. The 30×60 patio presented a special design challenge – the space was in disrepair and sat unevenly on a downward slope. Rising to the challenge, Patti and Stephanie partnered with Outer Space Landscapes to change the elevation of the patio in order to draw attention to the focal point and inspiration of the project: a beautiful canopy sofa by Century Furniture. The addition of 6 tons of landscaping material included Pennsylvania blue stone, pebbles, sand, cherry trees, azaleas and geraniums all blooming in the colors of the latest Sunbrella fabrics featured in the outdoor furnishings: crisp, sandy white, fuchsia and tangerine. Patti and Stephanie wanted to showcase clean and classic outdoor style with an edge of color and unexpected elements. Playful ottomans by Baker float in the space for multiple functions, adding an extra pop of color to the sophisticated setting which includes a dining table by Oscar de la Renta, organic spot tables from Phillips Collection, and daybeds and seating from Century Furniture. Combining their passion for interior spaces with signature designs, Allen and James Designs gave this outdoor space the comfort, color and style it deserved. Inspiration for a small timeless back porch remodel in St Louis with decking and a roof extension

A custom built home office built in shelving and cabinets in a dark wood stain to match the clients current home decor. Lighting runs up the shelving units to draw attention to the client's collection of personal display items. All of the office machines are behind the lower cabinets hidden away from view creating a beautiful, functional uncluttered working space.

The white colors in this large L-shaped kitchen help the bright colors in the flowers and decorations to stand out and draw attention. We designed this 3,162 square foot home for empty-nesters who love lake life. Functionally, the home accommodates multiple generations. Elderly in-laws stay for prolonged periods, and the homeowners are thinking ahead to their own aging in place. This required two master suites on the first floor. Accommodations were made for visiting children upstairs. Aside from the functional needs of the occupants, our clients desired a home which maximizes indoor connection to the lake, provides covered outdoor living, and is conducive to entertaining. Our concept celebrates the natural surroundings through materials, views, daylighting, and building massing. We placed all main public living areas along the rear of the house to capitalize on the lake views while efficiently stacking the bedrooms and bathrooms in a two-story side wing. Secondary support spaces are integrated across the front of the house with the dramatic foyer. The front elevation, with painted green and natural wood siding and soffits, blends harmoniously with wooded surroundings. The lines and contrasting colors of the light granite wall and silver roofline draws attention toward the entry and through the house to the real focus: the water. The one-story roof over the garage and support spaces takes flight at the entry, wraps the two-story wing, turns, and soars again toward the lake as it approaches the rear patio. The granite wall extending from the entry through the interior living space is mirrored along the opposite end of the rear covered patio. These granite bookends direct focus to the lake.

Graphic bamboo patterned wallpaper adds a fresh pop to the dressing room, and echos the octagonal pattern of the nearby bedroom rug. This bold and classic wallpaper pattern also draws attention away from a large preexisting faux wood closet unit needed for storage in this antique cottage.
